Hemos llegado a la Unidad 10, me siento muy feliz de que continúes en este viaje a través de los
tiempos para que cuando necesites expresarte en este idioma, sepas identificar qué herramienta
debes utilizar para hacer la conversión de un idioma a otro.

En la unidad pasada vimos a “could” y me gustaría que tradujeras un par de imágenes, nada más
para cersiorarnos de que ya tienes “could” súper entendido:

You couldn´t live without you

I think that we couldn´t be friend

Now, do you remember the example about the person who comes and says that he has a stomach
problem? And you tell him:

“You could see a doctor”

Do you remember it?

Do you remember that the translation for that in Spanish could be:

“Podrías ver a un doctor”

And do you remember that you could see the same person one week later in a hospital but in a
very complicated situation and you tell him exactly the same sentence?:

“You could see a doctor”

but in this second case, the translation in Spanish would be:

“Pudiste ver a un doctor”

or

“Podías ver a un doctor”

¡Muy bien!

Pudiste leer la explicación en inglés, traducirla al español y además le entendiste. ¡Exelente!

Con la siguiente cosa que necesitamos estudiar, algo similar sucede, solo que en lugar de usar al
verbo poder, ahora usaremos al verbo deber.

¿Te acuerdas que te conté que would pospreterizaba a todos los verbos, menos a dos? Bueno,
pues uno de ellos es could, (al cual ya le agarraste la onda muy bien). El otro es el verbo deber. No
sé quién decidió que fueran solo estos dos verbos. Pero así fue. Es algo que sólo dios sabrá…

Te presento entonces al verbo deber:

should
Funciona igualitito que could solo que, en lugar de usar el verbo poder, ahora tenemos que
cambiarlo por el verbo deber.

Incluso podemos retomar el mismo ejemplo del amigo que llega y nos dice que le duele el
estómago y nosotros le decimos:

“You should see a doctor”

Lo que estaríamos diciendo aquí es:

“Deberías ver a un doctor”

Now let’s suppose that one week after that episode, you see your friend, again but this time in a
hospital, in a very complicated situation and you tell him the same sentence:

“You should see a doctor”

En este caso la traducción de esas mismas 5 palabras ya no sería “deberías”; sino:

“Debiste ver a un doctor”

“Debías ver a un doctor”

¿Ya le agarraste la onda?

Entonces, “should” y “could” dependen del contexto para saber si están en pospretérito, pasado o
copretérito.

Aunque normalmente la traducción de ambos casi siempre está en pospretérito; pero si en un

momento dado, haces la traducción al español de esa manera y no te suena bien, prueba el
copretérito o el pasado y ya uno de esos dos tiene que sonar bien.

Aquí te he puesto un cuadro con todas las posibles combinaciones de “should”:

Reading

When I see my friend Alan, I always think that he’s not ok. I think he should see a doctor because
he works and works and never sleeps. I could go with Alan to see a doctor now but he doesn’t
want to go.

He says that he’s ok and that everything’s ok. I think he should live a little. Life’s beautiful and you
