Ingles: This paper examines the efficacy of the Equine Patnering Naturally program for reducing
anxiety and Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), contributing to the understanding of whether
equine-assisted therapy could be effective, and if so, under what circumstances. Since there
were more studies, but with diverse and vague results, either due to the difference in
psychological disorders, age range or techniques used in the volunteers. The volunteers'
inclusion criteria were that they had experienced at least one traumatic event and have current
PTSD symptoms with more than 31 points on the PTSD checklist. Participants were 12 female
and 4 male volunteers age 33 to 62 years old; the program was in groups of 5 to 6 participants
for 6 weeks, the sessions were 2 hours once a week. The activity carried out was individual while
the rest occasionally commented on the task carried out with the participation of the Dr. Yetz.
At the end of the 6 weeks of activities, Participants’ PTSD symptoms, emotional distress, anxiety
symptoms, depression symptoms, and alcohol use decreased significantly following program
participation, while mindfulness of therapy participants increased. Based on this study, it can be
concluded that horse-assisted therapy through the Equine Partnering Naturally program could
be effective for the treatment of PTSD, symptoms of anxiety and depression; since according to
the same participants in week 6 of the treatment they felt a significant reduction in the anguish
related to their trauma and a lower burden of their anxiety and depression. At the beginning of
the sessions, some participants stated that they did not feel completely comfortable with the
horses, which did not correlate with the symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD or the increase
in mindfulness that all the participants felt at the end of the therapy. In this study, there was no
control group or subsequent follow-up of the participants, points that the paper mentions that
should be taken into account in future work.
