Gloria is 13 years old, and she lives in a small house in Puno. She
lives with her father, Raul; her mother, Ursula; and her little
brother, Jimmy. “We like vegetables.” Gloria says. She likes
tomatoes, spinach, and lettuce. Jimmy likes beetroots. But
vegetables do not grow in Puno. It is very cold.
Gloria says: “I have an idea.” Next day, Gloria speaks with her mother:
“Mom, let’s grow vegetables in the garden.” Her mom tells Gloria’s
father: “Gloria wants to grow vegetables in the garden.” Her father
tells little Jimmy: “Gloria wants to grow vegetables in the garden.”
Jimmy exclaims: “Let’s grow vegetables in the garden!”
Gloria is very happy. Her family will help her with the food
garden. Her father says: “We need to construct a small
greenhouse because it is very cold in Puno.” Her mother says:
“I can get tomato and pepper seeds, onions, garlic, lettuce and
cut cilantro leaves.” Jimmy asks Gloria: “How can I help
Gloria?”; Gloria answers: “Let’s clean the garden, Jimmy.”
Gloria has another idea: “Let’s sell the vegetables in the local
market.” Gloria and her family sell some of their vegetables
in the local market in Puno. People are surprised. People ask:
“How do you have these fresh vegetables? Vegetables do not
grow in Puno because it is very cold.”, and Gloria says: “We
have a food garden in a greenhouse at home. I have another
idea. Let’s grow vegetables in the community.”
