Rock Cycle
The rock cycle refers to the progressive transformation of Earth's materials
from one type of rock to another, be it sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock, or
igneous rock. There are several cycles or stages through which it must pass to
form a rock, some of these are erosion, transport, deposit, accumulation, etc.
We will look at each cycle carefully to understand the rock cycle and its
process.
1) Magma is molten rock that forms deep below the earth's surface. The
magma cools and solidifies. This process is known as crystallization, it
can occur below the surface or after a volcanic eruption on the surface.
2) These resulting rocks are igneous rocks. If igneous rocks surface, they
undergo a weathering process, in which atmospheric agents slowly
disintegrate this rock.
3) The materials resulting from weathering can be displaced or transported
by an erosive agent such as surface waters, glaciers, wind and waves.
4) These particles called sediments are deposited on the ground, not all the
particles get to be in these deposits, some sediments end up reaching the
ocean, others to accumulation areas are flood plains in rivers, deserts,
swamps and dunes.
5) Once deposited, the sediments undergo a lithification process, which
means that they become rock.
6) Sediment tends to lithify into sedimentary rock when it is compacted by
the weight of the overlying layers or when it is cemented as infiltration
groundwater fills the pores with mineral material.
7) If the resulting sedimentary rock is buried deep in the Earth and
metamorphism, a dynamic process of mountain formation, intervenes,
or if it is instructed by a magmatic mass, the rock will be subjected to
great pressures and / or high temperatures, the Sedimentary rock reacts
to the changing environment and will develop into a third type of rock,
called metamorphic rock.
8) 8. When the metamorphic rock is subjected to additional pressure
changes or higher temperatures, it will melt, creating magma, which
will end up crystallizing again is an igneous rock, starting the basic
cycle of rocks
