Past Simple

Talking about the past is an important part of learning English. So, let’s study verbs
in the past. They can be regular or irregular.
The irregular ones, as its name says, have no specific spelling rules. That means
you have to learn them by heart (using your memory).
However, there are some patterns between their present, past simple, and past
participle forms that may be useful to analyze.

On the other hand, regular verbs have spelling rules. These rules apply for
the past simple and past participle forms since their spelling is the same
(siterminaenconsonate, agregared; siterminaen vocal agregar d; siterminaen y,

Present Past Pastparticiple

work worked worked
talk talked talked

finish finished finished
walk walked walked
listen listened listened
Add -d
change changed changed
move moved moved
practice practiced practiced
live lived lived
Eliminate "y" and add "-ied"
study studied studied
apply applied applied

Now... When do we use the past simple? What do we use it for?
We use past simple to talk about finished actions or states in the past.
Examples:

 Barack Obama was the first Afro-American President of the United

States. (state)
 Charlie Chaplin made over 100 movies. (finishedaction)

Real Life
Months and Dates

Now that you are learning the past, it is important to learn how to express the
time when something happened.

To talk about dates, we have to follow this order:
1. The month; remember that months always use capital letters at the beginning.
     Examples:    July     September     May     October
2. The date, which is expressed using ordinal numbers.
For example:   July 4th (written) / July fourth (said).

3. The year. We usually say years by dividing them into two parts:

1998
         nineteen 19 – 98 ninety-eight
Example:   July 4th, 1998 / July fourth, nineteen ninety-eight
 ENGLISH IN CONTEXT:

Pronunciation

During this class, you learned how to write verbs in the past tense.
However, their pronunciation does not always match their spelling. When
talking about regular verbs in the past simple tense, there are some important
things to recall:

-Voiced sounds: Are those that make your vocal cords "vibrate", like /z/. All
vowels are voiced.
-Voiceless sounds: when pronouncing these your vocal cords do not vibrate,
like /s/.

The -ed sound is pronounced differently according to the following rule:

o NOTAS VIDEO 1: PRONUNCIATION

Ej: Want – wanted = want + id / need – needed = need + id

b) Cuando el verbo (en presente normal) termina en un sonido de P,

K, F, S, SH, CH, TH, usar la pronunciación del ED, que suena
como T.

Ej: Help – helped = help + t / wash – washed = wash + t

c) Cuando el verbo (en presente normal) termina en un sonido de

vocal o de i, m, n, j, r, g, b, v, w, z, usar la pronunciación del ED,
que suena como D.

Ej: call – called = call + d / play – played = play + d

d) Siempre debes tomar en cuenta es como suena el ultimo sonido

del verbo en normal (es decir, no necesraimente las ultimas
ñetras coincidirán con el sonido, pero puede pasar, ej: promise –
promised = promise + t; close – closed = close + d), para luego
pasarlo a pasado, y definir que pronunciacion de ED usar.

 (ACE 1 Module 11 P. 90-96)

Verbs

more. Hereyouwillfindsomeverbs:

Life events

going to talk about?
In the following image, you will find common expressions to refer to the things
that someone already lived (life experiences).

Take a look at these examples, use the same verbs in past:

Past Simple - Part II and conjunctions

Part 2 / Language Building
(Module 11 ACE 1 P. 90 - 97)

Past Simple
You already know how to make affirmative sentences in the past simple tense.
Now, you will learn how to make negative ones. To make that possible, you will
review positive sentences in this comparative table. Please, take notes and pay
special attention to the differences between positive and negative sentences.
Questions in the Past Simple
Are you ready with the sentences? Now it’s time for questions and answers.
There are simple questions; that means that the answer is yes or no.
For example:

 Q: Did you stay at home yesterday?

 R: Yes, I did / No, I did not.

These kinds of questions are also used in the past. As you may remember, their
answers may be short or long.

 Short: Yes, I did.
 Long: Yes, I studied at the School of Modern Languages at college.

There are also information questions. These kinds of questions use question

words such as what, where, and when.

 NOTA: En las preguntas simples o preguntas de información, al escribirlas

ya no es necesario colocar el verbo en pasado, pues al usar el “Did” la
pregunta se cataloga en tiempo pasado.

Present Simple vs Past Simple

It is important to see the differences between the past simple and present
simple. Pay close attention to the table.

 Esto sucede porque:

REMEMBER:
We can also use the verb to be in past as an auxiliary verb in English (el was y el
were). We do NOT use “did” in these sentences or questions.
And/But:
Conjunctions are words that link other words, phrases, or clauses together. They
connect the ideas logically. Let's study a couple of them.
And: It has a positive meaning; you add an idea.
My mother was a teacher. My father was a doctor.
These are two separate sentences, but they can become just one:
My mother was a teacher and my father was a doctor.
But: It creates a contrast between the two ideas. There is always a comma (,)
before the but.
He hates Maths, but he loves English.
I like strawberry, but I love chocolate.
