Mount Rushmore National Memorial is located in the state of South Dakota. It is a

monumental sculpture made of granite. Mount Rushmore represents the first 150 years
of the history of the United States of America. It features 60-foot-tall sculptures of the
heads of four former United States presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson,
Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The sculpture took 14 years to build and
was completed in 1941. The memorial attracts approximately two million people
annually.

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist who lived from 1809 until 1882. Darwin is
famous for his theory of natural selection. He studied and presented compelling evidence
that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors. Darwin travelled
extensively around the coast of South America. His travels to the Galapagos Islands of
Ecuador inspired his book, “The Voyage of the Beagle.” His theories about the
“survival of the fittest” in the natural world were sometimes applied by others to social
phenomena. For example, people use the term “social Darwinism” to describe the
competition among individuals or groups. Darwin's theories about evolution also had a
tremendous impact on religious thought. Many people strongly opposed the idea of
evolution because it conflicted with their religious convictions.
