no menor a 4.

4) When teenagers grow up, they begin to value religion in a different way. .…………
5) Using the cell phone with friends/girlfriends/boyfriends doesn’t conflict with parents.
……………

7) to pick a fight (line 40): ……………………………………………………………

8) broken (line 53): …………………………………………………………………

READ THE TEXT

List of Common Conflict Sources between Teens and

Parents. Hot Topics for Heated Arguments:

1 Curfew: it’s a classic topic for parents and teenagers to argue about. It doesn't
2really matter what parents set the curfew, when kids don't show up when
3they're supposed to be home and makes parents worried. A worried parent
4becomes a scolding parent. So when the teen does come home, he gets an earful
5 and a stiff punishment.
9
CURSOS CUATRIMESTRALES DE INGLÉS – MATERIAL EXTRA - 3º año.

6 Cell phone use: historically speaking, cell phones are a new technology so this is
7 a fairly new source of conflict. This one usually ties in to other sources of conflict:
8 spending of money, and displays of affection. Usually the disagreement happens
9 when the teenager is using a cell phone excessively, either by racking up a very
10high phone bill or by using the cell phone to communicate with a significant
11other. Using the electricity or water is another easy source of conflict when you
12 have one person paying for something another person uses frivolously. "Turn
13 off the lights." "Close the door... Were you born in a barn?"

14 Noise: it doesn't matter whether it's a party, an electric guitar, or the TV. Parents
15 don't seem to have the same tolerance for noise as teenagers. Sometimes
16teenagers’ goal to have fun conflicts with the parents’ goal to get sleep. This is an
17 everyday occurring and common conflict. Type of music could fall under this
18category because if parents don't like the type of music the kids are listening to
19then they are more likely to tell the teenager to turn it down.

20 Boyfriend/girlfriend: there are 1000 reasons why a parent might not like your
21boyfriend or girlfriend as a teenager. There are 1000 reasons to justify that the
22parent is being unfair. Either way, parents probably see their kids as too young to
23 make a good decision if they are even old enough to date at all.

24 Church/religion: going to church and practicing religion is something that is

26they start thinking in more complex and abstract ways. They start to be cultured
27in and influenced by peers, teachers, coaches, and the media. Teenage beliefs may
28clash with parent beliefs about whether there is a God, who God is, or whether
29church is important.

EXERCISE 3
29 Grades: if there’s one easy standardized way for parents to gauge maturity and
30 discipline, it’s by looking at a teenager’s grades. Although this may not be totally
Say if these sentences are false (F) or True (T)
31 true, it’s available data to be used for judging a teenager every time grades are
32reported. Conflict happens when the parents’ expectations aren’t met.

33 Fairness: no one likes to work for free, but occasionally teenagers see doing
34chores as working for free. For example, the parents may be providing food,
35clothing, shelter, use of a vehicle, etc. But when you are young and self-centered,
36 that’s not enough payment for taking out the trash and cleaning your room.
37Allowances may not meet the adolescent’s expectations just like grades may not
38meet parental expectations.

39 Personal Appearance: tattoos, piercings, crazy hairdos, heavy make-up, or short

40 skirts are easy ways to pick a fight with parents who value traditional looks. It’s
41 ironic that the traditional parents somehow are blessed with children who
42ironically want to express their individuality by getting a piercing or a tattoo.
43Ironically, there are millions of teens expressing their individuality in the same
44way.

10
CURSOS CUATRIMESTRALES DE INGLÉS – MATERIAL EXTRA - 3º año.

45 Smoking, Drinking, and Drug Use: no parents say they want their kid to be a
46druggie when their child is born. When parents find out that their teen is doing
47drugs, it goes against their vision of a bright future for their child. By the time the
48 parents find out, it has probably become a problem in some way already.

49 Dishonesty: honesty is already a hot issue for some people. When parents are
50totally responsible for the person who is lying to their face, feelings of anger will
51 come to the surface. Lies are usually used to cover up something else. This
52includes theft, sneaking out, and hiding a tattoo. As a teenager, when trust is
53broken, it can take a while to dig out the hole you dug for yourself.

SUPERSTITIONS
Superstitions can be defined as the irrational belief in the existence of mysterious
forces. If people don´t take the correct action, these forces will control their
destinies. People of all social classes believe in different superstitions. Sometimes,
people don´t want to admit that they believe in superstitions, but they try to follow
the correct action, just in case.

Some superstitions are the consequence of common sense. ”If you walk under a ladder,
something bad will happen”. This is quite obvious. Something can fall on the top of
your head.

Others have their origin in old beliefs. “If you carry a rabbit’s foot, you will have
prosperity”. Why do people associate rabbits to prosperity? Rabbits are prolific
animals. Around 600 BC, they became a symbol of fertility. So, if you have a rabbit´s
foot in your pocket or as a keyholder, remember to rub it frequently and you will
have as much as you want.

“Knock on wood three times and the good spirits will help you”. Tradition says that when
you touch or knock on wood, you will have the good spirits on your side. In this
way, they will bless you and send you good luck. If you don’t find wood, don’t
worry. You can touch your own head!!!! Are you superstitious?

Note: American people think that they have to knock on wood three times. British people
think they have to touch wood.

Understanding phobias. The Basics.

What Are Phobias?

Phobias are irrational and disabling fears that produce a compelling

desire to avoid the dreaded object or situation. A phobic person
understands that the fear is excessive or groundless. But the effort to
resist it only brings more anxiety.

Phobias often begin in childhood. People who suffer from phobias often
fear a specific thing, such as germs, bugs, school, dentists, driving,
water, balloons, snakes, high places (acrophobia), or enclosed spaces
(claustrophobia). The fear is usually not of the object itself but of some
dire outcome, such as falling from an airplane.

Someone with agoraphobia suffers multiple fears that have three main
themes: fear of leaving home, of being alone, and of being in a situation
where one cannot suddenly leave or obtain help. When fear is at its
peak, the agoraphobic may go to almost any lengths to avoid leaving
home.

In social phobia, a person's central fear is of being humiliated in public.

People with this kind of phobia may even balk at eating in a restaurant.
They avoid public speaking, parties, and public restrooms. Such
situations and places may bring blushing, palpitations, sweating,
tremors, stuttering, or faintness.

A person whose phobia is left untreated may become withdrawn,

depressed, and socially incapacitated. Fortunately, there are treatments
for phobia.

What Causes Phobias?

Some specific phobias can be explained as fear responses to early

traumatic events, such as an attack or bite by a dog, but the majority has 46
no obvious cause. Most develop when an underlying fear or conflict is
transferred to something completely unrelated. Agoraphobia may
develop in response to repeated panic attacks. Symptoms of social

I-READING COMPREHENSION:
A)Read the interview. Match the questions to the corresponding
answers. (3p)
A- What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in life? ____
B- What subjects were you good at? ____ DANIELA NARDINI,
C- What did you want to do when you were a child? ____ actress, star of the BBC
series This Life.
Interview by Leila Farrah
1- Where did you go to school? St
Mary’s Primary School in Largs, a small Scottish town. Then, Largs Academy, the local secondary school.

2- Did you get into trouble?

No, my school reports usually said ‘friendly and well-behaved’. I don’t think I was rebellious, in fact I was quite shy1. I
became more of a rebel in secondary school. I stayed until I was eighteen, but I was quite lazy and uninterested and I
didn’t do very much work.

3- ___________________________________________________________?

I loved English and art, but I wasn’t very good at maths. In English lessons we read plays, and I sat at the back of the class
thinking, ‘Why can’t you all act a bit better?’ It was the first time I thought about being an actress.

4- Did you have a favourite teacher?

I will always remember some of my teachers2. I loved Miss O’Toole, one of my primary teachers. I loved her because at
school, even if you were doing maths with her3, which I didn’t like, she used to let me draw, and she never got angry4.
At secondary school I liked my biology teacher5, Mr Scott, and my geography teacher, Mr Brunei, because they were
nice people, although I wasn’t very good at their subjects.

5- _____________________________________________________________?

As a little girl I wanted to be a movie star, and I usually made my dad act out scenes with me. I also wanted to be a make-
up artist.

6- _____________________________________________________________?

Try to do the things you love the most - even if you think it’s silly. I’ve learned more through working and acting6,
because it teaches me about life. To earn money by doing something you love can only make a happier person.

MOCK FINAL TEST

I) READING:
A) Read the text carefully.

Is gossip really good for you?

That’s the question we asked some of our readers this week. Email us and tell us what you think.

Lesley Hartley, age 25

‘There’s a boy in my class at university who I really like. He’s called Tony. I was too scared to ask
him out. I told my best friend Alice this secret. She said she wouldn’t tell anyone. Alice couldn’t keep
the secret, though, and she gossiped to her other friends. Of course, her friends told 1Tony!
Fortunately for me, the gossip was actually a good thing. Tony waited for me after class one day. He
told me that 6 Alice’s friends had gossiped about me. And then he invited me to go out to the cinema
one night. We’ve been together since then! I think people are probably programmed to gossip. We
need to gossip to build connections with other people.’

James Goodman, age 35

‘Unfortunately, I think gossiping is in our genes. And I don’t think it’s a positive thing. People gossip to
make themselves feel more important. They don’t think about the effect it has on the people they
gossip about. For example, one of my neighbours gossiped about me after I divorced my wife. She
said that 3 I had treated my wife badly. Another neighbour told my work colleagues that my wife was
going to move 2 to Germany with the children. These are both lies. I’ve found it difficult to meet
someone else 4 because people believe the gossip, not me.’

Eric French, age 28

‘We shouldn’t feel guilty about a bit of gossip. I believe that gossiping is good for you. We are people,
and people enjoy sharing news – both good and bad – so that they can form and improve their social
relationships. I’ll give you an example ... I’m quite shy and I don’t make friends easily. My girlfriend
told me that I didn’t go out enough, and that I should have a better social life. She complained about
this to her best friend, Susan. Then, one night, I got a phone call from Danny, Susan’s boyfriend. He
asked me to go out with him to see a band. I had a brilliant night. 5 Since then, Danny and I have
seen a band every week. He’s a good friend now and I feel much happier.’
