TOPIC TWO
THE VERB
EL VERBO
WHAT IS A VERB?
Verbs are the action words in a sentence
that describe what the subject is doing.
Along with nouns, verbs are the main part
of a sentence or phrase, telling a story
about what is taking place.
Qué es el Verbo:
Se conoce como verbo una clase de palabra cuyo significado indica la
acción, el estado o proceso que realiza o sufre cualquier realidad
mencionada en la oración.
Grupo 1. En algunos tiempos verbales, cambian la e por la i. Por ejemplo: medir (mido,
midió, midamos)
Grupo7. En algunos tiempos verbales, pierden una consonante y una vocal. Por
ejemplo: hacer (haré, en lugar de “haceré”)
SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD
Verb tenses in the subjunctive mood are used in special kinds of statements. The most
common use of the
subjunctive mood is in
contrary‐to‐fact or
hypothetical
statements. In your
own writing, you must
decide which
statements should be
in the subjunctive
mood. If something is
likely to happen, use the indicative. If something is hypothetical, or contrary to fact, use the
subjunctive.
INTRANSITIVE VERBS
Intransitive verbs are action verbs that always express doable activities. They are different
from transitive verbs because there is no direct object following an intransitive verb.
Los verbos copulativos son uno de los tipos de verbos en español más
conocidos. Son aquellos que realizan una unión entre el sujeto,
normalmente representado por un sustantivo y el predicado. Estos
tipos de verbos no sirven para explicar ninguna acción, sino una
REFLEXIVE VERBS
A reflexive verb is one where the subject and object are the same, and where the action
‘reflects back’ on the subject. It is used with a reflexive pronoun such as myself, yourself
and herself in English, for example, I washed myself.; He shaved himself.
Estos son también otro de los tipos de verbos en español que tienes
que conocer. En los verbos reflexivos, la acción del verbo recae sobre el
sujeto del mismo, es decir, el sujeto será el mismo que ejecuta la
acción.
AUXILIARY VERBS
Auxiliary verbs are also known as helping verbs and are used together with a main verb to
show the verb’s tense or to form a question or negative. Common examples of auxiliary
verbs include have, might, will. These auxiliary verbs give some context to the main verb,
for example, letting the reader know when the action took place.
Los verbos auxiliares son una serie de verbos que se considera difícil
definir, su función es básicamente consiste en un verbo que explica la
acción que realiza el verbo principal.
Este verbo ayuda a expresar si la acción del primer verbo es activa o
pasiva.
Los verbos auxiliares en español son tres: Ser, Estar y Haber.
ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE
Active voice means that a sentence has a subject that acts upon its verb. Passive voice
means that a subject is a recipient of a verb’s action. You may have learned that the
passive voice is weak and incorrect, but it isn’t that simple. When used correctly and in
moderation, the passive voice is fine.
In English grammar, verbs have five properties: voice, mood, tense, person, and number;
here, we are concerned with voice. The two grammatical voices are active and passive.
La voz activa indica que el sujeto realiza la acción del verbo mientras
el complemento la recibe. En el caso de la voz pasiva, el sujeto recibe
la acción del verbo y el complemento agente realiza la acción del
verbo.
