Quisiera agra
decer a G

» La generalización de este tipo de tecnologías va a modificar la forma clásica de interactuar de los humanos;
¿Quién tendrá acceso a ellas?

Biomimetic interfaces, such as skin or ingestible sensors have revolutionised the ability to perform continuous
and minimally invasive monitoring of human tissues, offering great opportunities for improving the knowledge and
treatment of many diseases.
Until now, Western Medicine has been mainly based on studies on the sick population (patients) monitored in a
hospital setting. With the arrival of electronic devices and materials capable of measuring physiological parameters
continuously and non-invasively, new opportunities to understand health, in addition to disease, have arisen along
with the possibility to study broader population groups representative of the global population.
These tools are inspired by the way biological systems work, since they are able to monitor physiological patterns
and respond accurately to biophysical stimuli. These devices offer hope to many patients, such as those suffering
from neurological diseases, and represent a window into improving the knowledge of the human body and mind.
As part of the Conferences and Debates on Science of the “Fundación Ramón Areces”, a monographic session
on the use and potential of biomimetic sensors in the field of medicine was held on 6 February 2020. Spanish and
international experts, who are considered worldwide experts in their research field, participated in this meeting,
bringing their experience and showing their advances and concerns.
I
am pleased to accompany Soledad Santos, who will outline this edition of Conferences and Debates on Science.
This is the twelfth time we have had the collaboration of Springer Nature to conduct this activity, and it is a
pleasure to receive them at the “Fundación Ramón Areces”.
In this 12th Conference we have brought together experts in engineering, biomedicine and bioethics to discuss
developments in advanced biomimetic devices, including devices capable of monitoring human fluids through the skin
(sweat, saliva or tears) and those that can be ingested, as well as to know their use for monitoring and treating diseases.
During the years that we have been collaborating with Springer Nature, we have covered various topics. First, genetic
testing: the age of personal genomes. Then, the nanotechnology revolution was addressed, followed by personalised
medicine –a topic that links to the content of this edition. Subsequently, autoimmune diseases, emerging infectious
diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus and regenerative medicine were addressed– the latter being a promise of the future.
Another topic discussed in these Conferences was Down syndrome: from molecular mechanisms to clinical trials;
and subsequently neurodegenerative diseases, a real challenge of the 21st century, was discussed since it is one of our
greatest longevity-related problems. Stem cells and organoids, along with artificial intelligence in biomedicine, were the
predecessors of the topic at hand in this edition.
Years ago we thought about the importance of applying all current computer systems in biomedicine and, finally this
year, we are focussing on biomimetic sensors. I personally believe that this is one of the most interesting topics of
this era, since we intend to get progressively closer to the personalisation of the approach to pathological disorders. We
also seek to have direct dialogue regarding cellular, connective, cell signalling, genetic or epigenetic elements that can
guide us in preventing these disorders, or in slowing down their pathological effects.
Finally, we stress the importance these conferences have for us, which we hope will continue in the coming years.

W
elcome to the twelfth Conference-debate, which is the result of the collaboration between the “Fundación
Ramón Areces” and the Springer Nature Group that will address the topic: Biomimetic sensors.
Their use and potential in medicine.
For the whole team of Springer Nature in Spain, it is a great satisfaction to continue this collaboration with the
“Fundación Ramón Areces” another year and a great honour to contribute through these conferences with the important
mission of the “Fundación Ramón Areces” of bringing State of the Art Science to both our local scientific community
and the public in general.
In these times of fake news and Internet unfounded rumours, there is also a real interest in true science that questions,
raises and proves hypotheses through the scientific rigor of its experiments. From Springer Nature we are committed
to spread not only the most cutting-edge scientific advances, but also those that are performed following the criteria of
scientific integrity known by all.
Last year, under the title “Artificial Intelligence: What the Future Holds”, the speakers of these conferences explained
how the implementation of artificial intelligence tools in the field of medicine and the automation of many processes
raised ethical questions about what can and should be done within this field. Not long after, we had the privilege of
listening to Professor Rafael Yuste challenging us to establish “neuro-rights” in this same auditorium.
The symbiosis of passion for cutting-edge science and being open to continually approaching new challenges make the
relationship between the “Fundación Ramón Areces” and Springer Nature perpetuate over time. Once again, we
sincerely thank the “Fundación Ramón Areces” for giving us this great opportunity to collaborate in the organization of
these conferences. We especially thank the Scientific Committee, represented in this table by Professors Federico Mayor
Zaragoza and José María Medina, who choose each year a topic of great scientific relevance and interest to the general
public. Likewise, we want to thank the General Manager of the Foundation, Mr. Raimundo Pérez-Hernández y Torra,
and Mr. Manuel Azcona, Director of Communications, for opening the doors of this house every year to organize the
conferences.
This year, we enter the biomimetic field from the notions of artificial intelligence we discovered last year. Since ancient
times, humans have observed the solutions given by nature to develop techniques and devices that allow them to
progress. In recent decades, biomimetics have designed new materials and technologies with applications in both tissue
engineering and regenerative medicine, as well as in the administration of medicines and in nanomedicine.
The speakers will lead us into the world of brain interface devices capable of recording the activity of a single neuron.
We will also learn more about how to apply these advances in the development of innovative individualised brain
therapies. We will turn it up a notch by also delving into how to use bacteria to detect skin changes or how to assess
the gastrointestinal tract through an ingestible device that incorporates bacterial sensors. In the hands of our speakers,
bacteria have gone from being our enemies to being our allies. I would like to thank George, Anne, Marc and Rabia for
their willingness to participate in these conferences; it is an honour for us to have them.
Finally, our thanks to Erika Pastrana, Executive Editor of the Nature Journals, for the moderation of this event. Thank
you for bringing the best science closer to us and for your enthusiasm and dedication in sharing it.

» Polymer microelectrodes can individually measure neurons without penetrating the brain, something that
is being already used in clinical practice.
» Electrophoretic devices can release the drug into the brain in a "dry" manner, without the solvent,
with excellent spatiotemporal resolution. It has only been tested in animal models, but there are many
expectations placed on its future application in humans.
» The use of microfluidic technology allows achieving expandable implants, which allows minimizing the
invasiveness of brain and spinal cord surgery.

CONCLUSIONS
» A better targeted therapy will be provided by identifying the underlying electrical circuit dysfunction pre-
sent in many brain disorders.
» The generalisation of such technologies will change the classic way of human interaction; it's not going to
be a purely verbal or sensory communication any longer, but will be based on brain activity.
» This technology raises some bioethical conflicts that we must be able to solve in the coming years: Who
will have access to them? Is it possible to enhance the intelligence of certain humans? Will it be a tool of
social discrimination? How does it affect personal identity and privacy?

» Great benefits are obtained with this bacterial sensor, which is environmentally resistant/resilient, which
provides natural advances for the detection of blood residues in the gastrointestinal tract and possesses
high sensitivity and specificity.
CONCLUSIONS
» Microelectronics are used to optimise complex data processing and wireless transmission, so the need for
power is extremely low.
» With the new version of the ingestible microbioelectronic device we will be able to offer minimally invasive,
fast and cost-effective biomarker detection in the gastrointestinal tract.
» Our biosensor is the result of a perfect combination of biology and electronics to transform diagnosis and
an important advance for disease control.

forma precisa a estímulos biofísicos.
BIOMIMETIC SENSORS
Their use and potential in Medicine
Biomimetic interfaces, such as skin or ingestible sensors have revolutionized our ability
to perform minimally invasive and continuous monitoring of human tissues, offering great
opportunities for improving the knowledge and treatment of diseases. Until now, Western
Medicine has been mainly based on studies on sick population (patients) m onitored
in a hospital setting. With the arrival of electronic devices and materials capable of
continuously and non-invasively measure physiological parameters, new opportunities
to understand health in addition to disease have arisen as well as the possibility to
study broader population groups representative of the global population. These tools are
inspired by the way biological systems work, since they are able to monitor physiological
patterns and respond accurately to biophysical stimuli. These devices offer hope to
many patients, such as those suffering from diabetes or neurological diseases, and
represent a window into improving the knowledge of human body and mind.
In this 12th conference, experts in engineering, biomedicine and bioethics gathered
to discuss the progress in the development of advanced biomimetic devices, including
devices capable of monitoring human fluids through the skin (sweat, saliva or tears)
or be ingested as well as their application in monitoring and treating diseases such
as diabetes.
