people doubt that the Day corresponds to the actual date of his birth. In spite of its
Christian origin, Christmas is also celebrated by a lot of non-Christian countries and
the celebration includes a lot of non-religious customs. People exchange gifts and
greeting cards. Homes are decorated with Christmas trees, light and garlands.
Dinners are planned with special food and all the families gather to have a lot of
fun.

A central imaginary figure in Christmas is Father Christmas, also called Santa Claus.
He is believed to fly on his sleigh bringing gifts for children.

Christmas is also an opportunity for economic growth. It has become an important

period for business activity. Shops make a lot of profit and a lot of countries realized

GOING TO THE MOVIES

My class is going to the movies on a field trip next week. We have to get permission
slips signed before we go. We also need to ask our parents if they will drive to the
movie theater. We are going to see a movie that tells the story from a book we read.
We love it when movies are made from books. It is fun to compare the movie to the
book. I usually like the book better.
We get to the movie early so we can buy popcorn. Some of us buy candy and slushes
too. We all enjoy watching the movie. When we return to school, we talk about
things that were in the movie and the book. The movie and book are similar. We all
agree that we like the book better though. Books let you picture the characters any
way you want to picture them.

THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD’S WEATHER

Nobody can be sure what the weather is going to be like in the future, but many
people think there are going to be some changes Scientists say that in many places
it's going to be hotter and it's going to rain less. Countries in Africa and Asia are
going to become very dry all year, and it’s going to be impossible for people to find
food and water. In Southern Europe and the United States it's going to be more
difficult for plants to grow. People there are also going to have problems finding
food in the future. Nobody knows exactly how much the temperature is going to go
up, but scientists say that the change is going to be at least 2"C. They predict that
the ice in the Arctic and the Antarctic is going to melt in the next hundred years and
a lot of the animals there are going to die. There is also going to be more water in
the oceans of the world so cities on the coast are going to disappear. Another
problem is that the weather is going to become more extreme. Scientists say that
there are going to be more hurricanes and typhoons in the future. These storms are
going to happen all over the world and many people are going to lose their home.

Will the temperature go down?

Stewart had a terrible day the other day. It was the day of his vacation to Spain but
it was a nightmare. He left the house at 10 o’clock in the morning and caught a taxi
to the airport. Stewart went to the check-in with his luggage. When the man who
worked for the airline asked for his passport, Stewart became very upset. Where was
his passport? Stewart realized he didn’t have his passport with him. What a disaster!

He jumped back into the taxi and told the driver to take him home. The driver drove
quickly and Martin arrived back at his house in twenty minutes. He ran into the
house and went into his bedroom. He found his passport on the bedside table and
left the house again. But the taxi wasn’t there! Where was the taxi!
