INSTRUCTIONS
1. The Spanish Oral Examination consists of two parts.

2. Part I is a Reading Passage which you will be asked to read out loud. You will be

allowed 5- 10 minutes to select and prepare to read this passage. You will be assessed

by your teacher using the scoring guide provided in this paper.

3. In Part II you will also be asked several questions by the teacher on three (3) different

topics. Listen carefully to each question and answer in Spanish.

 READING PASSAGES

Prepare ONE passage to read aloud.

1. Trip to Maracas Bay

El viaje a Maracas Bay fue muy interesante para Pablo. Pasaba las vacaciones de verano en

casa de su primo Manuel. Pablo era venezolano y ésta era su primera visita a Trinidad. Su tía

Juanita les dio a los muchachos una merienda y muchas bebidas deliciosas para gozar. ¡Qué

escenas magníficas! ¡Las montañas, los valles, los ríos y claro que sí, la gente!

2. Lorca

Federico García Lorca es uno de los más importantes autores del mundo hispánico. Las más

importantes de sus obras son Bodas de Sangre, Yerma y La Casa de Bernarda Alba. En sus

obras, examinó la sociedad y los asuntos de las mujeres. Trataba de los temas como el honor,

la situación de la mujer y las relaciones entre los hombres y las mujeres. En sus obras, había

mucha tragedia.

3. The Big Hand

A Evangelina le gustaban muchísimo los caramelos. Un día su mamá y ella visitaban a una

vecina que le ofreció a la niña unos caramelos de una botella grande. Pero la chica rehusó.

Después de un ratito la mamá tomó una puñada para la chica y salió. En casa, la madre le

preguntó a Evangelina por qué no tomó los caramelos. Evangelina le respondió, <<Mamacita,

porque Ud. tiene una puñada más grande que la mía>>.

4. The Computer

Hoy en día, muchos jóvenes usan el ordenador en sus escuelas y en sus hogares. Lo usan para

estudiar y también para jugar. A la mayoría de los jóvenes les gustan los juegos de

computadora. Un juego popular es “Grand Prix” – un juego de carreras de coches. El joven

típico puede gastar mucho tiempo jugando, si no puede manejar su tiempo.

5. Mangoes

Un árbol de mango puede vivir por más de doscientos anos. Durante este tiempo produce

aproximadamente 2 millones de frutas. El mango contiene muchas vitaminas, tales como A,

B, C y E. Se recomienda comer los mangos, para obtener la piel suave y sana. El consumo de

esta fruta ayuda a prevenir el eczema, el envejecimiento de la piel y la ceguera. Se puede usar

los mangos para hacer mermelada, gelatina y almíbar.

9 - 10 Excellent Excellent recognition and delivery of key elements of the sound

system including pronunciation, stress and intonation. Speech is
even and continuous.
7-8 Very Good Generally displays recognition and delivery of the sound system
with only a few errors in pronunciation or stress. Speech is
continuous, may have a few pauses and instances of
inappropriate intonation or influence of the mother tongue.
6 Satisfactory Recognition and delivery of critical elements of the sound
system, with errors in pronunciation and stress. Speech may be
halting and uneven with noted influence of the mother tongue,
but is comprehensible.
4-5 In Progress Displays little competence, but still attempts to reproduce the
text. Speech is disjointed and slow, many errors in pronunciation
and stress, very heavy influence of the mother tongue.
0-3 Minimal Speech is limited to isolated words and phrases, barely
comprehensible.

Rubric for the Oral Interview

9 - 10 Excellent Understands all questions, readily answers appropriately. Speech

is natural and continuous with minimal pauses. Utterances and
pronunciation generally correct, a wide range of vocabulary used,
expressions are appropriate.
7-8 Very Good Understands and answers all questions, may require occasional
repetition. Some hesitation and pauses but generally manages to
complete responses. Most utterances rendered correctly, only
minor structural or pronunciation errors. Accurate use of
essential vocabulary.
6 Satisfactory Understands almost all questions, requires some repetition.
Frequent hesitation, a few responses may be incomplete. Many
correct utterances, some structural or pronunciation inaccuracies.
Fairly adequate use of vocabulary.
4-5 In Progress Understands some questions, requires considerable repetition.
Answers few questions, speech is unnatural with great hesitation,
many incomplete responses. Few utterances rendered correctly,
major structural and pronunciation inaccuracies, restricted use of
vocabulary but responses are comprehensible.
0-3 Minimal Understands very little, little or no attempt to respond. Speech is
halting and fragmented, with long unnatural pauses.
Conversation is virtually impossible. Little or no responses
rendered correctly, minimal vocabulary, may resort to
anglicisms, is barely comprehensible.
