Prlogo
Este libro va ms all de lo que suelen ofrecer las guas corrientes para turistas. Para la persona que ya sabe ingls, esos
manuales convencionales no servirn de mucho, pues se limitan
a largas enumeraciones de comidas, ropas o las frases ms usuales como Gracias, seora y Por favor, camarero. Para eso, no
se necesita una gua, sino un diccionario.
Quien ya sabe ingls, desea ampliar su vocabulario, pero tambin quiere conocer modismos, usos y costumbres, lugares, etc.
En definitiva, desea que se le d una idea de cmo es la vida en
el pas que va a visitar y que se le indique qu hacer en cualquier
situacin corriente que pueda presentarse. Por ejemplo, a
dnde ir si se tiene un espantoso dolor de muelas? Cmo comportarse si nos invitan a una cena familiar? Y cmo explicarle a
la polica que el otro conductor es el culpable del accidente que
acabamos de sufrir? Todo esto y mucho ms puede suceder
durante un mes de estancia en cualquier pas de nuestro agitado planeta.
En Ingls urgente para situciones frecuentes, se ofrece en forma

amena la historia de un joven que recorre una buena parte de los
Estados Unidos. Por medio de agradables dilogos, se transmiten conocimientos idiomticos avanzados, haciendo hincapi en
el lenguaje comn, que es el que se habla a cada paso.
A continuacin de la pequea historia en espaol que presenta
una situacin, el lector interesado encontrar un vocabulario
espaol relacionado con el tema. En la pgina de enfrente, aparece la misma historia en ingls y, debajo, la traduccin del vocabulario tmtico.
De esta forma, es posible aprender por comparacin el vocabulario que pudiera llegar a utilizarse en determinada situacin.
Si la persona interesada slo desea una informacin, bastar con
que lea atentamente este libro. Pero tambin tiene la oportunidad de profundizar los conocimientos. En ese caso, resulta recomendable escribir en un cuaderno aparte las palabras ms
importantes, memorizarlas mediante la prctica escrita y oral,
de modo que queden firmemente incorporadas a su vocabulario. As, si llegara a encontrarse en una situacin semejante,
sabr cmo reaccionar de manera natural y no tendr que estar
hojeando con nerviosismo una gua o un diccionario.
Es posible que algunas voces aleguen que se trata de un mtodo tedioso e innecesario. Pero los viajeros experimentados
saben que el dominio de una lengua facilita las cosas y permite
que se disfrute plenamente del viaje. Con qu facilidad se establece una relacin amistosa cuando las palabras fluyen! Nada
entorpece ms los movimientos que estar pendiente de un diccionario para cosas tan nimias como pedir un vaso de agua o
preguntar cmo se va a un museo. No todos tienen paciencia ni
tiempo para esperar a que el visitante logre articular a duras
penas una oracin al mejor estilo jefe indio, que seguramente
ir acompanada de una mmica ridcula. En cualquier pas, todo
marcha mucho mejor si el visitante es capaz de hacerse com-

prender con correccin, a pesar de algn que otro error sin

importancia.
Por todas estas razones, recomendamos el estudio a fondo de
cada una de las historietas y su correspondiente vocabulario.
Estamos seguros de que este aprendizaje contribuir a hacer
mucho ms agradable la estancia en cualquier pas de habla
inglesa.

La llegada
Desde su ventanilla, Luis Prez observa entusiasmado cmo
el avin inicia el descenso en el aeropuerto de Miami. Decidi
realizar este viaje para perfeccionar sus conocimientos de ingls,
familiarizarse con las costumbres del pas y visitar a su primo
Manuel. Ya tiene en la mano su pasaporte, donde hace unas
semanas le sellaron un visado de entrada. Ahora la azafata le
entrega una tarjeta que debe rellenar.
Poco despus, en el edificio del aeropuerto, pasa el control
de pasaportes, donde un funcionario le hace estas preguntas:
- Buenos das, seor. Su pasaporte, por favor.
- Aqu est.
- Cul es el motivo de su viaje?
- Estoy de vacaciones y quiero aprovecharlas para conocer
mejor el pas, adems de visitar a unos familiares.
- Cunto tiempo piensa quedarse?
- Slo cuatro semanas. Ya tengo reservado mi vuelo de
regreso.
- Sera tan amable de entregarme su tarjeta de entrada?
- Por supuesto, me olvid de entregrsela. Disculpe.
- Todo est en orden. Puede pasar.

Looking out the plane window, Luis Prez is excited as it
begins its descent to Miami airport. He decided to make the trip
to perfect his knowledge of English, get to know the customs of
the country and visit his cousin Manuel. In hand he has his
passport where several weeks ago they stamped his entry visa.
Now the stewardess gives him a card he must fill out.
A bit later, in the airport building, he passes through passport
control where an official asks him these questions:
Good morning, Sir. Your passport, please.
Here you are.
What's the reason of your visit?
"I'm on vacation and I want to take advantage to know the
country better and visit several family members.
How long do you expect to stay?
Only four weeks. I already have my return trip reserved.

Fortunately, Luis' baggage is intact and in good condition.
He puts the suitcases in a cart and goes toward customs. He
takes his place in the line for people who have nothing to declare. Beside him are the few travellers who have some article to
declare. His turn comes quickly. A very pleasant girl asks him:
"Do you have something to declare?"
"No, nothing."
"Do you have cigarettes, perfumes, alcoholic beverages?"
"I have cigarettes and cologne for my personal use, besides
this bottle of liquor that I bought in the airport shop.
"Here's the bill."
"Can you open this bag, please?"

Se dirige a la oficina de informacin, donde le atiende una
seorita muy eficiente.

To the hotel
Luis has already reserved a room in a Miami Beach hotel. He
is planning to rent a car, but he is very tired out from the trip
and prefers to take a taxi now to go to his lodgings.
He goes to the information office where he is received by a
very efficient young girl.
"Where can I take a taxi?"
"If you go out through this door, you'll find a stop on the
right. Where do you want to go?"
"To this hotel," Luis says, showing her his reservation. "Will
it be very expensive?"
"No, here this service is economical. Remember that you'll

Luis consigue pronto un taxi. El taxista, al verle en apuros
con su equipaje, las bolsas y dems, se baja para ayudarle.

Efectivamente, apenas Luis ha terminado de acomodarse en

In the taxi
Luis gets a taxi quickly. The driver sees his complications
with luggage, bags and the rest, so he gets out to help him.
"Let me help you, Sir."
"Oh, yes, thank you very much."
"Here everything will be safe and sound," says the man as
places the things in the trunk. "You can get in. We'll leave
at once".
In effect, Luis has scarcely made himself comfortable in the
seat when the driver is behind the wheel.
"Where can I take you"
"I want to go to this hotel. Here's the address. Do you know
where it is?"
"Ah, yes. It's a good hotel."
"Is it very far?"
"No. If were in luck and the highway is clear we'll be there
in half an hour."

Three quarters of an hour later the taxi stops in front of the

Room Service
Now more relaxed, he decides to eat in his room, since he
is tired and wants to sleep early. He calis room service.
"Good evening. What can I do for you?"
"Please send up a waiter with ham and cheese sandwhiches."
"Do you want any dessert or something to drink?"
"Yes. Chocolate ice-cream and expresso coffee."
A quarter of a hour later there is a call at the door.
"Who is it?"

El desayuno
Por la maana, despiertan puntualmente a Luis, que ha dormido de un tirn. Apenas ha terminado de afeitarse y asearse,
cuando llaman a la puerta para traerle el desayuno.
En una enorme bandeja, encuentra un tazn con cereales y
leche, un vaso de zumo de naranja, un plato de huevos revueltos con bacon, un platillo con mantequilla, una tarrina de mermelada de fresa y otra de miel, tostadas y una taza de caf,
acompaada de nata lquida y azcar.
Luis no est acostumbrado a comer tanto por las maanas.
Pero se esfuerza, pues quiere adaptarse pronto a las costumbres
del pas. Cuando termina, piensa que no volver a probar bocado en todo el da.
Como es un hombre ordenado, quiere colocar sus cosas en

Breakfast
In the morning they awake Luis punctually. He has slept like
a log. He has scarcely finished shaving and washing when they
call at the door to bring him his breakfast.
On an enormous tray he finds a bowl with cereal and milk,
a glass of orange juice, a plate of scrambled eggs with bacon, a
saucer with butter, a cup of strawberry marmelade and another
with honey, toast and a cup of coffee with cream and sugar.
Luis is not used to eating so much in the morning. But he
makes an effort, because he wants to get accustomed to the
habits of the country. When he is finished he thinks he will not
eat anything else all day long.
Since he is an orderly man, he wants to put his things away
in the closet before calling his cousin Manuel. There will be time
for everything.

La conferencia
Aunque por la diferencia horaria sabe que va a despertar a
su madre, Luis prefiere hacerlo, pues as est seguro de que se
encontrar en casa y la tranquilizar.
- Seorita, soy el husped de la habitacin 879 y deseo una
conferencia a cobro revertido con el nmero 429-3050 de
Madrid.
- Enseguida, seor. No cuelgue, por favor.
- Esperar.
Apenas han trascurrido unos minutos, Luis escucha de
nuevo la voz de la operadora:
- Seor, lo lamento, ese nmero no contesta.
- No es posible, es mi casa y all siempre hay alguien.
- Podra repetirme el nmero de nuevo ms despacio?
- Es el 429... Oh disculpe! Le di un nmero equivocado. Es

Por fin Luis consigue hablar con su madre, que se alegra de
que todo le vaya tan bien y le pide que la llame a menudo,

The long-distance call
Although because of the time difference Luis knows he will
be waking his mother, he prefers to do it because he knows he
will find her at home aud he can assure her.
"Miss, I'm a guest in room 879 and I want to make a collect
call to number 429-3050 in Madrid."
"Right away, Sir. Hang on, please."
"I'll wait."
In scarcely several minutes Luis hears the operator's voice
again.
"I'm sorry, Sir, but that number doesn't answer."
"That's not possible. It's my house and there's always
somebody at home."

Luis knows that in the hotel there are various service areas
and shops. Before calling his cousin he wants to buy a newspaper, a tourist guide and a couple of things he needs.
On the ground floor he goes to the shopping and service

La farmacia
Para Luis representa toda una novedad entrar en la farmacia. Parece como si all hubiera de todo lo que se puede necesitar en esta vida. Desde aspirinas hasta un helado.
As es, adems de los medicamentos que se despachan con
receta, en el mostrador y en las estanteras hay diversos medicamentos de uso corriente, como aspirinas, tabletas para dormir,
antispticos, tiritas, vendas. Tambin hay una enorme variedad
de golosinas: chocolates, pastillas, caramelos, chicles en todas
las formas, sabores y colores. Si se tiene la desgracia de que se
rompa una media, all encontrar otro par que la reemplace.
Jabones, pinturas, pegamentos, artculos de tocador... En fin,
todo lo que uno pueda imaginarse que cabe en un espacio tan
pequeo.
Luis encuentra enseguida sus aspirinas y, aunque desayun
opparamente, cree que un helado le vendr muy bien para
hacer frente al calor. Se sienta en las altas banquetas que estn
ante el mostrador y un amable camarero le atiende.
- Qu desea, seor?
- Un helado.
- De qu sabor? Con crema o sin ella? Quiere chocolate
derretido? Le gustan las almendras o los cacahuetes? O
prefiere alguna fruta?
- Quiero un helado de chocolate sencillo, simplemente eso.
Una bola grande de helado y nada ms.
El camarero lo mira extraado. Mientras observa cmo Luis
saborea su solitaria bola de helado, sacude la cabeza como

The pharmacy
Going into a pharmacy is something completely new for
Luis. It seems like it has everything you might need for the rest
of your life. From aspirin to ice-cream.
That is the way it is. Besides the medicines sold by prescription, at the counter and on the shelves there is regular medicine
like aspirin, sleeping tablets, antiseptics, band-aids and bandages. There is also an enormous variety of sweets: chocolates,
candies, bon-bons, gums in all sorts of forms, flavors and colors.
If you unfortunately have a hole in your sock, you will find
another pair there. Soap, make-up, glue, toiletries. In the final
analysis, everything you might imagine in such a small space.
Luis finds his aspirin at once and, although he had a tremendous breakfast, he thinks he would like an ice-cream to help
him do battle with the heat. He sits on one of the high stools at
the counter and a pleasant waiter serves him.
"What will it be, Sir?"
"An ice-cream."
"What flavor? With or without cream? Do you want melted
chocolate? Do you like almonds or peanuts? Or do you prefer some fruit?"
"I want a simple chocolate ice-cream, that's all. A large scoop
of ice-cream and nothing else."
The waiter looks at him strangely. He watches how Luis is
savoring his single scoop of ice-cream and shakes bis head as
though he were saying that these foreigners miss out on everything.

With his aspirin in hand and refreshed by the delicious icecream, Luis continues through the shopping zone. He sees the

La familia
A la salida del trabajo, Manuel pasa a recoger a Luis. Despus de un reparador descanso, ste se encuentra listo para el
reencuentro con sus familiares.
Manuel vive en Hialeah, a pocos kilmetros de Miami. All
tiene una pequea pero confortable vivienda unifamiliar, rodeada de un precioso jardn.
- Teresa se entretiene mucho con las plantas. Hasta ha logrado cultivar claveles y sus rosales son famosos en el barrio.

The family
Manuel stops to pick up Luis when he gets out of work.
After a pleasant rest, the latter is ready to meet his family again.

Una recepcin acogedora
La prima Teresa est en el portal de la casa, esperando la llegada de Manuel y Luis. En cuanto los ve, les saluda con la mano

A warm reception
Cousin Teresa is at the door of the house waiting for Manuel
and Luis to arrive. When she sees them she waves her hand and

Aunque no estn en un restaurante, la mesa ha sido preparada como para una recepcin oficial. Dos grandes candelabros

En su nuevo coche y provisto de la gua turstica, Luis
emprende un viaje al centro de la ciudad. A diferencia de la
mayora de las ciudades europeas, concebidas en la Edad
Media, todas las ciudades de Estados Unidos cuentan con avenidas de trfico rpido y calles secundarias anchas. Luis disfruta tanto conduciendo sin los atascos comunes de su ciudad natal
que, de pronto, se da cuenta de que se ha perdido.
Se detiene junto a la acera de una plaza. Desciende del coche
y se dirige a un anciano, que descansa en un banco.

A tour of the city
With his new car and his tourist guide in hand, Luis starts

cities in the United States have avenues for rapid transit and
broad secondary streets. Luis is enjoying driving without the
traffijams common to his native city; but suddenly, he realizes
he is lost.

miniatura. Puede elegir entre varios tipos de mayonesas y alios. Escoge uno de finas hierbas. Despus duda entre una hamburguesa y un perro caliente, pero como piensa que eso podr
comerlo en cada esquina, se decide por una imponente pizza
napolitana.
Aunque hay muchas marcas de refrescos, prefiere probar el
t fro con limn. Como postre, elige una ensalada de frutas:
manzana, pera, cereza, pia, melocotn y ciruela.
Cuando ha terminado de almorzar, Luis se acerca a un
empleado:

In a self-service
At noon, Luis feels a little twinge in his stomach telling him
it is time to eat. Since he has to save after the unexpected expense of the lock, he decides to go to a self-service.
On a very busy corner he finds a place which looks clean
and where the service seems very quick. He enters and takes his
place in a short line. He takes a tray from the pile and places his
silverware and napkin on it. He begins to move along a long
counter. There is a large variety of salads whose attractive colors
are pleasing to the eye. He selects one which has cabbage, corn,
watercress, carrots and beets: a real little garden. He can choose
from among several types of mayonnaise and dressings. He
selects a fine herb dressing. After hesitating between a hamburger and a hot-dog, he figures you can eat that anywhere, and
decides on a big Napolitan pizza.
Although there are a lot of brands of soft drinks, he decides
to try iced tea with lemon. For dessert he chooses fruit salad:
apples, pears, cherries, pinapple, peaches aud plums.
When he has finished his lunch, Luis goes over to an employee.

Un partido de bisbol
Despus del almuerzo, Luis ha tenido tiempo de descansar
un poco antes que Sam pase a recogerlo. Ahora est fresco como
una lechuga.

conseguir un buen puesto.

A baseball game
After lunch, Luis takes time to rest a little before Sam comes
to pick him up. Now he is as fresh as a daisy.

Luis ha dejado su coche en un estacionamiento para poder

A dream come true
In 1790 when President George Washington selected the
banks of the Potomac River for the future capital of the emerging United States of America, he could not have imagined the
beauty and harmony it would come to have with the years.
Luis has left his car in a parking lot in order to go on a guided tour of the city.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are now on Pennsylvania Avenue, the main thoroughfare of the city. At the end on that hill
there's the Capitol. Well find there the famous Library of
Congress. On its impressive stairs new Presidents usually
take their oaths.
We'll stop a few moments at the White House, the residence of the President. You can get out and take photos. Please
hurry.
As you can see, the Ministeries have been built around the
White House. Now we'll go to the National Museum, the
home of the Smithstonian Institute. Then we'll pass the
Museum of Fine Arts which houses valuable collections.

Luis is very interested in getting to know the institutions of
higher education in Baltimore, especially Johns Hopkins University. He goes off toward there in his car. Arriving at an intersection, he continues because the light has just changed to

In the centre of the City
Recovered from a slight affliction, Luis returns to the subway. When he comes out to the street again, he is in the financial district. He takes a look at the Stock Exchange building; but
since he seems to bother the people in arush, he decides to go to
a quieter place.

Luis has offered to make the week's purchases in the supermarket. Rosa tells him how to get there and gives him the shopping list.
When he gets to the supermarket he leaves his car in a large
parking lot available for customers
Inside the establishment Luis takes a cart and begins to go
along the wide aisles. Here he has no chance to practice his oral
English, but he does look at the various signs indicating where
everything is. For example: Butcher, Packed Meats, Dairy Products, Fish and Sea Food, Spices, Bakery, Pastas, Wines.
The merchandise is well arranged and packaged. A number
of employees are replacing products on empty shelves. What is
on Rosa's list? Rice, vegetables, cereal for breakfast, margarine,

Preparando la caravana
Son las ltimas horas en Nueva York. Luis ha pasado unos
das estupendos en la ciudad y le parece como si hubiese vivido
all siempre. Ha ido a innumerables actividades culturales y

Getting ready for the wagon-train
These are the final hours in New York. Luis has spent some
wonderful days in the City, and it seems like he has always lived
there. He has gone to countles cultural and sports activities. He
has visited the most important places of interest, and he has had
the chance to behave like just another New Yorker.
Now Rosa and Enrique are going back and forth in the
apartment taking care of the details for the long trip by train to
the West. Ricky says it seems like they were preparing a wagontrain for a trek to hostile and unknown lands. Luis warns them
that he cannot carry so many gifts, since he will be returning to
Spain by plane. Rosa insists that he should take something for
the trip, even though the train will have a restaurant and a cafe
teria. Something from the house is always better.
When the time comes to close the suitcases, Ted and Ricky
have to use all their strength to make the top meet with the bottom. They finally manage it when Rosa sits decidedly on each
one.
"Do you have your ticket for the train?," Enrique asks him.
"Well, no. Ill go a little before departure time and buy it,"
Luis answers.

A la maana siguiente de la fiesta, todos se levantan tarde.
Por suerte, ninguno tiene resaca. As que estn todos de buen
humor. Luis acompaa a Josefina en la cocina, pues quiere ver
cmo hace las tortitas calientes.

The weather
The day after the party everybody gets up late. Luckily, no
one has a hang-over. So, they are all in good spirits. Luis goes
with Josefina to the kitchen because he wants to see how she
makes pancakes.

Al da siguiente, Luis llega a Filadelfia, que tiene fama de ser
la rancia cuna de los Estados Unidos. En 1682, William Penn
fund la ciudad. Aqui se firm la Declaracin de Independencia

Elegant Philadelphla
The next day, Luis arrives in Philadelphia, which has the
reputation of being the fine old cradie of the United States.
William Penn founded the city in 1682. The Declaration of Independence was signed here in 1776 and the Constitution proclaimed in 1787. It was the capital of the United States between 1790
and 1800. The oldest families of the city were considered the
aristocracy of the country. Besides being a great commercial and
industrial centre, it has universities and academies of arts, sciences and music. This gives it a special character.
Luis knows that tonight there is a Philadephia Orquestra
concert, and so he goes to the theatre ticket-window.

Poco despus del medioda, Luis hace su aparicin en Elizabeth. Detiene su coche ante un edificio de cinco plantas, que se

Another hearty welcome
A bit after midday Luis makes shows up in Elizabeth. He
stops his car in front af a five-story building which is on a busy
street. There is a call-phone at the door.
"Who is it?"
"It's me, Luis. I just arrived.
"Ah, he's here! Come up, come up!," the call-phone sounds,
and the door opens.
Luis uses the elevator to go up to the third floor. When the
doors open, his cousin's wife Rosa is there waiting for him.
"What a pleasure to see you again, Luis! I recognized you at
once. Your face hasn't changed. Come on, come on. We're
waiting for you. Enrique will arrive later. He doesnt get out
of work until five. Have you eaten yet? Do you want a
snack? I'll give you a lemonade until the kids get home."
His cousin and family live in a modest appartment. The
living room-dining room has a fireplace in the centre. It seems
more of a decoration than anything else, because there are
plants in it. The furniture is comfortable, but not so attractive for
European tastes.
Rosa takes him to the kitchen. It is large and light, with all
kinds of appliances. This is where the family normally eats.
Rosa tells him that there are three bedrooms and a bathroom.
The divelling has large closets in all the rooms. The only thing
Rosa does not like is that there is no balcony or terrace. She
would like to have a lot of plants, but now she has to be content
with those inside and the ones she has at the windows.

Crossing the country
Luis has had few chances to have such a good time. His
compartment-mate has turned out to be such an enjoyable
fellow who never tires of telling jokes and stories about his fije
as a travelling salesman. He knows the country from top to bottom. He can tell you everything about every state and every
large or small city. From the goat that ate Aunt Emma's hat to
the name of the current Mayor or Governor. However, the passtime will end quickly.
"Your tickets, please," says the conductor once more. "Oh,
excuse me".
"We know one each other, right?"
"Yes, my friend. Do you want to share the last drink with
us?," Jerry Cummings asks. This representative knows almost
all the railway personnel.
"I'm sorry, Sir. I'm on duty," the conductor answers seriously.

Luis sale del ferrocarril y, de pronto, se encuentra en el puerto. Camina un poco desorientado a lo largo de algunos muelles

gras. Por fin, un cartel le da la solucin para seguir su aventura: dar un paseo en un barco de recreo por el ro y la baha.

In the port
Luis gets off the train and immediately finds himself in the
port. He walks a bit lost among a number of docks and imposing warehouses with cranes sticking out of their roofs. Finally
a sign offers him the solution to his adventure: he will take a trip
on a recreation boat through the river and the bay.
"I'd like a ticket for the excursion."
"Here you are".
"What time does it leave?"
"In ten minutes."
"How long is the trip?"
"Around two hours, since it includes a visit to the Statue of
Liberty."
"Is there a risk of getting sea-sick?"
"Absolutely not, unless you could get sea sick in your bathtub at home. Here the sea is normally calm. Besides, we have
a splendid day today. Don't you think so?"
The passengers make themselves comfortable in their deck
chairs or lean on the rails. A whistle sounds and the deck-hands
rush to pull up the gang-plank. Quickly the boat heads toward
Ellis Island where you can still find the buildings which received millions of immigrants.
"Excuse me, will we make a stop on Ellis Island," Luis asks a
sailor.
"No, Sir. This excursion doesn't include that visit."
Luis is sorry. But he hurries to the starboard side to enjoy
there the marvelous view of Manhattan. The boat passes by
Governors Island before heading toward a small island. Luis

wants to go to the prow, but a sailor stops him. They are going
to cast the anchors as soon as they land.

Un smbolo
Por fin Luis cumple uno de sus sueos: ver de cerca la Estatua de la Libertad. Un gua les explica la historia del monumento, regalo de Francia a los Estados Unidos. Despus el grupo

excelente de la ciudad. Por suerte, hoy el aire es difano y puede

Luis finally realizes one of his dreams: seeing the Statue of
Liberty close-up. A guide explains the history of the monument,
a gift from France to the United States. After, the group has the
chance to go up to the observatory which offers an excellent
view of the city. Lucky, the air is clear today and they can even
see the roller-coaster on Coney Island.
On the boat again, the water becomes turbulent. Luis speaks
with the first sailor he sees.
"Please, where is the infirmary?"
"There's no infirmary on recreation boats, Sir. Is something
seriously wrong?"
"I'm sea-sick. There's no nurse either?"
"No, Sir. These are just short trips. If it were a serious case,
we'd head for land immediately."
"But my case is serious," exclaims Luis who now has a yellowish-green face.
"Don't worry. It's nothing. Sit down here and take some fresh

"They wouldn't help you now. Relax and try to think about
something else. In twenty minutes we'll be ashore and
everything will be over. If you take a pill now, you'll be
falling asleep on the street. If you drive, it could be dangerous."
"All right. There's nothing to do but be patient."

los tos le llevan al aeropuerto para que emprenda el viaje de

- Perd una llave y me cost 200 dlares. Despus tuve un
choque. Enferm y me sacaron una muela. Me desplumaron
en el casino y, por ltimo, el terremoto. Por no hablar de las
minucias: un pinchazo, un cortocircuito, el cctel que me
dej fuera de combate, el mareo en el barco o que casi pierdo la cartera.
- Bien, pero no todo fueron desgracias, verdad? - intenta
confortarle Rodrigo-. Habrs pasado tambin buenos ratos.

At the airport
Fortunately, the earthquake was not serious. It was only a
slight tremor with six degrees on the Richter scale. AlthoughLuis, not an expert in such affairs, thought the earth was falling.
So after saying good-bye to Phil, Esther, Paul and Andy, his
uncle and aunt take him to the airport to make the return trip to
Spain via New York.
"Ah, Luis, I'm really sorry you've had so many surprises
during your visit," says Josefina.
"Well, they're experiences. I wanted to really know the
country, and I think I've managed to do it in a short period
of time," Luis consoles her.
"It seems to me you didn't start out on the right foot," Rodrigo tells him. "Because how many things happened to you?"
"I lost my key and it cost me 200 dollars. Then I had an accident. I got sick, and they took out a tooth. I lost my shirt in
a casino, and then the earthquake. Not to speak of details: a
blowout, a short-circuit, a cocktail that knocked me out, sea
sickness on a boat, and I almost lost my wallet"
"Well, it wasn't all that bad, right?," Rodrigo attempts to
comfort him. "You've also had a good time?"
"Of course. The cousins in Miami and New York as well as
you people have treated me like a prince. You've been very
warm with me. Besides, I've had the chance to get to know
people who are very nice and anxious to help," Luis says.

Ah, something had to happen!, sighs Josefina. Isn't that
Andy running over here?
Yes, but... maybe I forgot something, says Luis.
And so, Andy arrives out of breath toward the three.

white as a sheet, fearing the worst.

dollars, and you have to go and get the bread, Andy tells
him, laughing at the incredulity of his cousin. So you were
poor little Luis down on his luck!
I have to sit down! I can't believe it.
