EL SUSTANTIVO
El Gnero
El gnero de los sustantivos en ingls
puede ser determinado por:
a) UN SUFIJO (principalmente para indicar
el femenino), por ej.actor-actress (actoractriz), hero heroine (hroe-herona);
aunque el cambio es por lo general del
masculino al femenino, ocurre lo contrario
en ciertas palabras, por ej. bridebridegroom (novia-noviodesposados),
widow-widower (viuda-viudo).
b) UN PREFIJO (para indicar el sexo de un
sustantivo de gnero epiceno), por ej. hebear she-bear (oso-osa), male child
female child (nio-nia).
En ciertos casos se emplean palabras
diferentes para designar la contraparte
femenina o masculina, por ej. boy-girl
(muchacho-muchacha), uncle-aunt (tota).
El plural
1. El plural regular se forma aadiendo una
s al sin-gular, por ej. girl-girls (muchacha-s),
boy-boys (mu-chacho-s), horse-horses
(caballo-s).
2. Los sustantivos que terminan en s, sh, ch,
x, z reciben es en el plural, por ej. gasgases (gas-es), brush-brushes (cepillo-s,
brocha-s), church-churches (iglesia-s), boxboxes (caja-s), topaz-topazes (topacio-s).
3. Algunos sustantivos que terminan en o
tambin reciben es en el plural, por ej.
hero-heroes (hroes),
Vulcano-vulcanoes (volcanes); otros
reciben slo s, por ej. bamboo-bamboos
(bamb-es), halo-haloes (nimbo-s).
4. Los sustantivos que terminan en y
precedida de una consonante forman el
plural cambiando dicha y por ies, por ej.
city-cities (ciudad-es), lady-ladies (seoraas).
5. Muchos sustantivos que terminan en f o
en fe cambian a ve en plural, por ej. leafleaves (hoja-s), knife-knives (cuchillo-s);

importancia.
Note el tipo de oraciones de uso comn en las que se utiliza.
Practique creando oraciones de a cuerdo a su entorno.
En la forma negativa, agregue not como se muestra en los recuadros.
Fjese en las formas abreviadas y su pronunciacin.
*Note que para tercera persona (he-l, she-ella, it-neutro) el verbo se usa de la misma
manera.

GERUND(verb+ing)
Gerundio(verbo+ing)
Es aquella forma del verbo que indica que la accin se est realizando. Como por
ejemplo, en estos momentos estar leyendo el manual.
En ingls, el gerundio se forma agregando ing al final del verbo.
Tomemos por ejemplo el verbo walk.
Note el uso del verbo to be.

4. Hasta, indicando efecto o resultado. Ej. I am soaked to the bone, estoy empapado
hasta los huesos.
5. Con. Ej. She has been very goo to them, ell ha sido muy buena con ellos.
6. Segn, de acuerdo a. Ej. to my way of thinking, de acuerdo con mi modo de pensar.
7. Por (en honor de). Ej. a toast to you, un brindis para ti.
8. A, indicando correspondencia, proporcin. Ej. A is to B as B is to C, A es a B como B es
a C.
9. A, hasta (indicando fin de un perodo de tiempo). Ej. from Monday to Saturday, de
Lunes a Sbado; she will be here from six to seven, ella estar ac desde las seis hasta
las siete.
10. Hasta (indicando grado o extensin). Ej. true to the end, verdad hasta el fin.
11. Por (indicando proporcin o cantidad relativa). Ej.four quarts to the gallon, cuatro litros

12. A (indicando algo que encuentra respuesta o reaccin). Ej. I will answer to that later,

13. A (indicando el fin o meta de una actividad). Ej.he took to singing, comenz a
aprender canto.
14. Para (indicando relacin o inters). Ej. he was like a father to me, l fue como un
padre para m.
15. A (indicando el destinatario de una accin o beneficio). Ej. title to the property, ttulo a
la propiedad.
16. Menos, para (indicando el tiempo para indicar la hora). Ej. five (minutes) to seven,
siete menos cinco minutos); cinco (minutos) para las siete.
17. Para, a, ante (indicando resultado). Ej. to my great surprise, I Heard him sing, para mi
gran sorpresa le o cantar; to the surprise of the audience, he started to sing, ante la
sorpresa del pblico, el empez a cantar.
18. Por (indicando accin futura). Ej. theres still much to do, queda todava mucho por
hacer.
19. No se traduce en castellano cuando sirve para introducir el infinitivo. Ej. to be or not to
be, ser o no ser.
20. No se introduce al castellano cuando sustituye al infinitivo al final de la frase. Ej. I
meant to call but I had no time to, quise llamarte pero no tuve tiempo (de hacerlo).

Para hacer una pregunta, simplemente se pondr el verbo antes del pronombre (vea
seccin El pronombre en la pgina 4), tanto para el tiempo presente como para el
tiempo pasado.
La frmula ser:
