Abstract
One of the greatest problems of the health care system is the cost of evaluation
of patients with chest pain (CP) in the emergency department (ED). CP is the se-
cond most common cause that will bring the patient to the emergency room. A
gement of these patients can be difficult. It is estimated that 4–8% of patients with
CP are inappropriately discharged from the ED. Therefore, it is necessary a correct
evaluation of these patients. We conducted a systematic literature review of stu-
dies regarding the cost-effectiveness of the radiological evaluation of CP in the
ED. A Medline literature search identified 17 studies that met criteria for inclusion.
The appropriate use of modern diagnostic imaging techniques at the emergency
radiological unit, especially most advanced CT equipments, can decrease the
number of unnecessary hospital admissions in patients with CP. Also the time to
diagnosis and the length of hospitalization may be reduced. Therefore, emergen-
cy radiology may help to reduce costs in the evaluation of patients with CP.
