Great Vowel Shift The Great Vowel Shift (GVS) was LS- -
a process by which the long TGVS-
stressed vowels of our language 1991
took a "clockwise tum in the
height dimension" (Schane,
1973) in the transition from
Middle to Modem English. The
GVS has left its mark on the
pronunciation and spelling of
today, and by comparing today's
English with that of yesteryear, it
is possible to reconstruct the
probable substeps of the GVS.
There are many theories about
the nature of vowels, and the
nature and causes of sound
change, and by examining these
it is evident that the Great Vowel
Shift is a fine example of a
natural phonological change.

Grimm in 1822. Grimm’s Law
affected the Indo-European stop
consonants, or stops, which
could be articulated as labial,
dental, or velar sounds.

I-language As is fairly well known, the ‘I’ in TT-CIL- -

I-LANGUAGE stands for words 2016
like “individual, internal, innate,
intrinsic, idealization and
intentional” (i.e. mental content
is about all kinds of stuff). I-
LANGUAGES are in the heads of
individuals. On the other hand,
the ‘E’ in E-LANGUAGE stands for
“external and extensional”. The
concept E-LANGUAGE places
language (referents/meanings
also) at least partially, outside of
an individual speaker’s head.
