The Critical Path Method (CPM) and the Program Evaluation and Review Technique
(PERT) are two essential approaches in project management that have
revolutionized how organizations plan, schedule, and control their projects. This
abstract explores these methods, highlighting their fundamental features and their
application in project management.
In contrast, PERT is used in projects where time estimates are uncertain. This
technique uses three time estimates for each activity, allowing for the calculation of a
weighted expected time estimate and an evaluation of the probability of different
project completion scenarios. PERT is particularly useful when variability in time
estimates can significantly impact project planning and execution.
Both approaches, CPM and PERT, are essential in project management as they
provide robust tools for efficiently planning projects, identifying critical activities, and
managing uncertainty in time estimates. By understanding and applying these
methodologies, organizations can improve efficiency and effectiveness in project
execution, leading to better cost control and successful completion within planned
timelines.
