Pointing Book

Goal: The student will point using a straight index finger and the rest of his/her fingers curled under.

Instructional Procedure: Make a book out of construction paper with 1 sticker per page. Sit behind the student. SD:
“Point” (each page). Use a physical prompt to prompt three fingers and the thumb into a fist with the index finger out.
Differentially reinforce lowest levels of prompting.

Teaching Steps:
1. Teach the student to straighten index finger when a physical prompt is provided to hold down the rest of the fingers.
2. Student straightens index finger and holds down rest of his/her fingers – with a faded physical prompt.
3. Prompt at student’s wrist only (+) if student’s index finger is straight and the rest of his fingers are in a fist.
4. No prompt – Student points independently
5. Teach the student to point to a preferred item independently when it is held in the air.
6. Teach the student to point to a preferred item on a high shelf (other items can be present).
7. Teach the student to point to a preferred item in the presence of other items at various distances.
