GRAMMAR: PRESENT SIMPLE AND PRESENT


CONTINUOUS
Adverbios de
THE PRESENT SIMPLE. tiempo:
Always
Afirmativas: Sujeto + verbo (-s 3º p. singular): I play football; She plays football. Usually
Often
Sometimes
Negativas: Sujeto + don’t / doesn’t + verbo: I don’t play football; She doesn’t play football. Rarely
Never
Interrogativas: Do / Does + sujeto + verbo?: Do you play football?.

PRESENT SIMPLE – EL PRESENTE SIMPLE.

Empleamos el presente simple en los siguientes casos:

1. Para expresar verdades generales o hechos: The sun rises in the east.

1. Para expresar hábitos o costumbres. Suele ir acompañado de expresiones temporales como every day:
Michael likes to walk in the evening.

2. Para planes futuros (en la oración suele ir alguna expresión temporal que indique tiempo futuro). Suele
referirse a horarios o programas: The new programme begins next week.

3. Para contar historias, cuentos, chistes, acontecimientos deportivos, etc: A husband and wife walk
into a restaurant. The husband says to the waiter…

REGLAS ORTOGRÁFICAS.

En la tercer persona del singular debemos poner una -s excepto en los siguientes casos.

A. Los verbos que acaban en s, ss, sh, ch, x, o añaden es.

Mix - mixes dash – dashes watch – watches do - does

B. Los verbos acabados en y precedida por consonante cambian la y por una i y después añaden es.

C. Los verbos que acaban en y pero llevan delante una vocal siguen la regla general, añaden s.

Say – says enjoy – enjoys pay – pays

THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS.

Afirmativas: Sujeto + verbo to be + verbo -ing: I’m playing football.

Negativas: Sujeto + to be NOT + verbo-ing: I’m not playing football.

Interrogativas: To Be + sujeto + verbo-ing?: Are you playing football?.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS – EL PRESENTE CONTINUO

El presente continuo se usa en los siguientes casos:

1. Para acciones incompletas que están ocurriendo en el momento de hablar (suele ir con expresiones
como now, at the moment, right now). Ex. We are discussing the problem right now.

2. Para acciones incompletas que están ocurriendo, aunque no necesariamente en el momento de


hablar, sino en un momento específico, no dura toda la vida. Ex. I am reading an interesting book.

3. Para preparativos o planes en un futuro próximo (generalmente con expresiones de tiempo). Ex. She
is giving a party tonight.

4. Para acciones que se repiten regularmente y que suelen llevar un sentido negativo (generalmente
acompañadas con palabras como always o forever). Ex. He is always losing his glasses.

5. Cuando cambiamos nuestra rutina o rompemos un hábito, en lugar del presente simple ponemos el
presente continuo. Ex. He always travels to work by car, but today he is taking a bus.

REGLAS ORTOGRÁFICAS.

A. Los verbos que acaban en e pierden la e al añadir ing.

Love – loving make – making

B. Los verbos que acaba en ie cambian la ie por y, añadiendo después ing.

Die – dying lie – lying

C. Cuando la última sílaba del verbo acaba en consonante- vocal-consonante y está acentuada debemos
doblar la última consonante antes de añadir ing.

Beg – begging begin – beginning Pero: enter – entering (ya que la última sílaba no está acentuada).

VERBOS QUE NO SUELEN IR EN TIEMPOS CONTINUOS.

A. Algunos verbos no aparecen en tiempos continuos.

Sentidos: feel, hear, see, smell, sound, taste.

Pensamientos / actividad mental: appear, believe, consider, depend, doubt, forget, guess, hope, imagine,
know, prefer, realize, remember, seem, suppose, think, and understand.

Emociones: dislike, doubt, fear, hate, like, love, need, want, wish.

Relaciones, posesión: belong to, have, owe, own, possess.

Medidas: cost, equal, measure, weigh.

Algunos de estos verbos pueden tener más de un significado y dependiendo de ello podrían usarse en
formas continuas. Por ejemplo se dice: I have an old car. (Poseo un coche). Pero se puede decir también: I’m
having lunch with my older sister (voy a comer).

Lo mismo ocurre en este ejemplo: I think it’s a great play. (es mi opinión). Pero si lo podemos traducir por
creer (believe), no debes poner el tiempo en continuo. Pero: I’m thinking of selling my house. (estoy
considerando).

WRITING: INFORMAL EMAILS AND LETTERS
Informal letters are sent to people you know well = friends, relatives, etc.

Style: informal:
- Everyday vocabulary

- Short forms (e.g. can’t, don’t, I’m, I’ll)
