The lile Coating lndustry headquarters lies 30 metres west of National Highway 1 at the 227 km. mark. The facade of the
new building is set parallel and ahead of the existing administrative building, linked by a raised, covered gallery al the upper level.
The two-storey structure has a 6.40x6.40m modulation. Formally, it consists of two linked bodies. The Exhibition Hall, on a square plan, is
partially raised on pillars. lt has a stepped roof crowned by a conical skylight. The second body, the offices zone, is on a linear plan with
less depth. The roof is slightly curved and has an east-facing balcony/terrace. On the plan, the articulation of the two bodies describes an
L-shape with arms in differing dimensions.
The raised body of the square plan creates a covered zone for visitar reception and the arrival and departure of vehicles. A dual height entrance
containing the staircase and goods lift leads to the Exhibition Room on the second floor. The exhibition space is modelled by the stepped
roof and skylight which provides the appropriate type of lighting.
The building structure consists of walls, pillars and girders in reinforced concrete. Double gazing is used with stainless steel and wood in
externa! and interna! frames respectively. Mosaic flooring is used, while the walls are stuccoed. The wet area walls are protected by ceramic
tiles to a height of 2 metres, and the outer walls of the building are protected by a granite slab sacie.

r::

11 is basically structured into lwo storeys above ground level, excepl for the final lhird nearesl the control lower, which is developed on a single floor. The conslruclion is completad with a small basement. The floors clearly mark the
hierarchies ol uses, while the patios distinguish them. Thus, the largest patio, with a longitudinal form, organises the administrative programme, while the small courtyard distributes the social and representative functions. The unit left
beiween the two patios attends the horizontal and vertical connections of the Chancellery and the common areas: vestibules, atriums and washrooms.
The design of the interior spaces, practically common to the whole building, is based on a sequence of rooms turned towards the patio with a distribution corridor opposite, separated from lhem by a double wall used for technical func
tions. The main entrance to ihe precinct is at the lowest point near the control tower, tangential io its axis. This entrance is reminiscent of the indirecl entrances to ancient Arabian buildings, including the presence of water. lt leads the
visitar to discover, almos! by surprise, the large courtyard that must be followed over its entire length to reach the building through the unit separating this patio from the other. There are two further restricted entrances al the opposite
end, near the classrooms. The pedesirian access leads into the representative patio, while the road access leads directly to the basement.
The concrete structure is based on pillars and lightweight bi-directional slabs with moderate dimensions. This siructural simplicity permits ihe creation oí an outer double brick wall with air space and insulation to shelter ihe building
from the climatic inclemencies.
The exterior finish is in slucco wiih lile dust, complemented by a 1.80 m. high protective stone socle, except in the large patio which will be tiled- a tradition in this area, where the coolness provided by lhis material is sought. The outer
window trames are painted mixed sleel-wood lo permit an acceplable conjugalion ol protection and durability wilh the warmth of wood inside.
The interior linish reinforces the hierarchical nature of each floor. The ground lloor is paved in sione while the more noble upper level is in tengue and grooved batten boards. The interior walls and ceilings are in stucco with prevision
for painted high-density wood dados on the lower lloor and ceramic tiles upstairs.

Oporto, Portugal, 1991/1999

SERRALVES FOlJNDATION
The new Porto Museum of Contemporary Art is to be built in the Quinta de Serralves, a property comprising several nuclei of houses surrounded
by gardens, woods and meadows, which was commissioned by the Count of Vizela in the 1930's to serve as his private home. The Museum has a new autonomous nucleus
which is independent from the existing units, and will embrace most of the functions currently lodged in the main house, which has been used as an exhibition space for
the last ten years. This new edifice will occupy the grounds now used for the orchard and vegetable garden, which will be transplanted to another area of the Quinta.
This particular spot was chosen as the best for the location for the Museum due to the proximity of the main Avenue, ensuring easy public access, and the absence of
large trees, which would otherwise have had to be cut down.
A roughly North-South longitudinal axis serves as the framework for the project. This axis takes the direction of the pre-existing paths in the vegetable garden. In a mor
phological description of the building, we have a main body from which two asymmetrical wings branch off southwards, crea1ing a courtyard between them, and an L
shaped volume set to the North, which creates another courtyard between itself and the central body in the public entrance zone.
The building volume is defined by vertical surfaces faced in stone or stucco. The 1op of 1hese walls maintain a cons1an1 level while the base accompanies the changing con
tour of the land, which falls approximately 9 metres in a N-S direction, corresponding to a 5.3% slope. The public entrance to the Museum grounds through an opening in
the perimeter wall is at the highest point of the terrain. This aperture provides access to a patio where the staircase and elevator from the underground car park and paths
from different gardens all converge. A gallery opens onto a large courtyard which leads into the museum and, through an independent entrance, to the auditorium foyer.

VILLA COLONNESE

VILLA COLONNESE
The property to be renovated, set in an area defined by Vía Roma, Estrada Valle San Lorenzo, a neighbourhood pathway and the city wall, is lormed essen
tially by the XVIII century Villa Colonnese, its garden, the Oratory dating from the XVIII century, and the entire natural area around it. The Renovation Plan envisages a
drastic reduction in volume from the present 18,955 m2 to 12,045m2, based on the total demolition of the units adjacent to the Villa, which at present make the main
nucleus unrecognisable. The Villa will recover its original state, a free-standing construction, and will once again become the most importan! element of the unit. This
hierarchy, further encouraged by its higher topographic position, is respected in the new distribution.
The classical garden opposite the villa is cleaned up and completed, while also re-establishing the pedestrian access beside the Oratory, which recovers its importance
as a transitional feature between the interior and exterior of the property. A conservative restoration pattern is envisaged far the latter. Thanks to the maximised usage
of the existing circulation system around the perimeter and within, the number of entrances and itineraries required to reach the new constructions has been minimised,
thus ensuring a predominance of green areas in the landscaping project. Far the new constructions, we propase not so much parcelling as a singular siting model, involv
ing houses dispersed amongst the vegetation, in line with what seems to be the nature of the most significan! types of architecture in the Berici Hills landscape. The
houses are arranged in two groups, typologically different and aligned on east-west and north-south lines.
