Kate Winslet, from
damsel in distress
to dramatic force
In 1994, he starred in New Zealand's “Heavenly Creatures”, under the direction of the one who
would be the director of “The Lord of the Rings”, Peter Jackson. It was her first film and she played
a teenage complicit in the murder of her best friend's mother. Then, in 1995, he would work under
the orders of Ang Lee to antagonize Emma Thompson in the adaptation of Jane Austen's novel,
"Sense and Sensibility".
Since then, his interest in taking challenging acting roles and curating his resume has
been evident. The lead in "Titanic," a major commercial production, would seem like a
turnoff, even many big names turned him down like Claire Danes, Reese Witherspoon,
Winona Ryder, and Gwyneth Paltrow. But it ended up being a success, as James
Cameron's epic became a cultural phenomenon that would make his name ubiquitous
and leave him the endearing friendship with his co-star, which he still maintains today.
