Juan C : Hi Flor! I am OK! I’m cleaning my room right now.
Flor : Oh great! Can I ask you some question? What’s your favorite

Juan C : Eeeh eeeh… My favorite color is green. I don’t have a
favorite cake, I like all cakes! And I prefer electronic music.

Ramona: Do you have the information?

Flor : YES! Juan Carlos said that he was cleaning his room….
Ramona: No, the important information!
Flor : Oh! He told me that his favorite color was green. He said he

Keep in mind!

When we mention directly what another person said, we use Direct Speech.
When we talk about what another person said, we use Reported Speech.
Example: “I sometimes take out the trash.” [Direct Speech]
Example: He said (that) he sometimes took out the trash. [Reported Speech]

When the Direct Speech is in Present, the Reported Speech version is usually in Past.*
Example: “Mom cooks every day. She is tired.” Leo said mom cooked every day, and she was tired.
Example: “I am making my bed.” Leo said that he was making his bed.

* You can find a list of the Past Simple form of verbs in this Unit (and others) at the end of the Unit.

Exercise #3

changes (for example, changing “my” for “his/her”). Remember the word “that” is optional.
