Exercise #1
Read the following quotes (a quote is a phrase or sentence somebody said). Who from your family or
your friends would probably say this? Write their name next to each quote.
_________________________ “I’m hungry! I want to eat some fried chicken right now.”

Exercise #2
Read the following short story. Pay attention and underline the answers that Juan Carlos told Flor.
Then, circle how Flor reports the information to Ramona.
Flor and Ramona are preparing a little surprise party for their friend
Juan Carlos. They are talking at a park.
Flor : Do you know his favorite color? Or his favorite cake?
Ramona : No, I don’t! Can you call him?
Flor : Yes, we need that information for the party!
Flor : Hello Juan Carlos! How are you? What are you doing?
Juan C : Hi Flor! I am OK! I’m cleaning my room right now.
Flor : Oh great! Can I ask you some question? What’s your favorite
color? What’s your favorite cake? What music do you like?
Juan C : Eeeh eeeh… My favorite color is green. I don’t have a
favorite cake, I like all cakes! And I prefer electronic music.
Juan Carlos’ original answers and Flor’s report of the answers are very similar.
What are the most important differences?

Keep in mind!
When we mention directly what another person said, we use Direct Speech.
When we talk about what another person said, we use Reported Speech.
Example: “I sometimes take out the trash.” [Direct Speech]
Example: He said (that) he sometimes took out the trash. [Reported Speech]
When the Direct Speech is in Present, the Reported Speech version is usually in Past.*
Example: “Mom cooks every day. She is tired.” Leo said mom cooked every day, and she was tired.
Example: “I am making my bed.” Leo said that he was making his bed.
* You can find a list of the Past Simple form of verbs in this Unit (and others) at the end of the Unit.
Exercise #3
Transform the following quotes from Direct Speech into Reported Speech. Make any other necessary
changes (for example, changing “my” for “his/her”). Remember the word “that” is optional.
I am going to my ______________________________________________________
favorite barber shop. ______________________________________________________
Exercise #4 _
Re-write the Direct Speech quotes in Exercise #1 into Reported Speech, using the name of the person
you selected in each case.
