1) Gearbox
The gearbox is the most important organ of the transmission system. Its task is to transmit
the rotation of the engine to the driving wheels and provide the necessary force to
achieve a constant displacement, regardless of the inclination of the road.
2) Cylinder liners
There are two ways to make the inside of the cylinder, where the piston runs.
3) Carburetor
It is designed to produce a fine mist, made up of gasoline and air in the right proportion,
which, due to the spark from the spark plug, explodes inside the cylinder, in what is called
the combustion phase of an engine.
4) Race
It is the distance the piston travels in the cylinder from bottom dead center (BDC) to top
dead center (TDC). That distance is the height of the cylinder used to calculate the
displacement, the base is the diameter of that cylinder.
5) Crankcase or upper crankcase
Lower part of the engine block, if it is an in-line or V-cylinder engine. This part supports the
crankshaft itself and the forces exerted on it. Therefore, its shape, construction and type
of fastening to the cylinder block have a great impact on the rigidity of the engine.
6) Lower casing
Part that closes the engine from below and, therefore, is at a lower level than the upper
crankcase or crankshaft. The lubricant falls on the lower sump, which is either deposited
there to be pumped back to the engine if it is a wet sump, or it is sucked to send it to a
separate tank from where it is pumped, if it is a dry sump.
7) Bushings
Referring to the suspension, they are vulcanized rubber elements that are used to join the
suspensions to the chassis, so that there are no moving metal parts in contact.
8) Catalyst
It is an exhaust gas purifying element. Its operation is based on the fact that it contains
metals (especially platinum and rhodium in very small proportions) that facilitate the
reaction between the exhaust gases and the oxygen in the air, to convert them into less
harmful substances.
9) Crankshaft
It is one of the structural elements of the engine. Through the connecting rods, it
transforms the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotary motion, which is then
passed on to the wheels through the transmission.
10) Displacement
It is the sum of the volume of the cylinders that the engine has. It is expressed in liters (l)
or cubic centimeters (1,000 cm3 is a litre). In the US, the unit for cylinder capacity is the
cubic inch (cu.in) which is equal to 16.4 cm3. The cylinder that is taken into account to
calculate the volume is based on its diameter, and its height is the path of the piston
between its two ends.
20) CHOKER.
Valve placed on the Carburetor inlet pipe, which can be activated by hand, by means of a
rod from the Dashboard, or automatically, by means of a thermostat.
21) ADJUSTMENT.
