3. INTRODUCCIÓN
3.1 Generalidades
Los neutrones producidos en un reactor de investigación poseen diferentes propiedades que los convierten
en una herramienta experimental única para una variedad de disciplinas, incluyendo la ciencia de
materiales, física de la materia condensada, química, biología, física fundamental y aplicada, etc. Tales
propiedades incluyen longitudes de onda de De Broglie comparables a los espaciamientos atómicos en la
materia, energías en el rango de las frecuencias características de las vibraciones atómicas, la existencia de
un momento magnético intrínseco, y su interacción a través de fuerzas nucleares que cambian dramática y
no monótonamente de núcleo a núcleo. Es este conjunto de propiedades, únicas en muchos casos, lo que
ha promovido el enorme desarrollo y el gran campo de aplicaciones que las técnicas de dispersión
neutrónicas han alcanzado en años recientes [1].
Así pues, el empleo de neutrones permite explorar un amplio rango del espacio de fase Estructura-
Dinámica en la materia, bajo diferentes condiciones físicas, tanto en lo concerniente al arreglo y
movimientos de los núcleos atómicos, como así también de su correlato magnético asociado a los espines
no apareados en las estructuras electrónicas. De particular interés en ciertas aplicaciones básicas y
aplicadas es la capacidad de los neutrones térmicos y subtérmicos para identificar e interactuar
diferenciadamente con átomos livianos en presencia de átomos pesados, una tarea prácticamente
imposible para la radiación electromagnética – y la posibilidad de sustitución isotópica de hidrógeno por
deuterio para aislar características específicas de muestras biológicas o sistemas complejos.
Las técnicas basadas en haces de neutrones han estado haciendo contribuciones a nuestro
conocimiento científico por décadas. Son técnicas bien establecidas, luego de un desarrollo continuo que ha
conducido a mejoras significativas en las capacidades experimentales, teniendo hoy un rol decisivo en un
amplio rango de aplicaciones.

Los haces de neutrones se extraen de la región del moderador/reflector que rodea el núcleo de un
reactor de investigación (o del blanco/reflector/moderador en el caso de una fuente basada en acelerador).
Los neutrones emergentes tienen energías en diferentes rangos, dependiendo si son emitidos directamente
del moderador (a temperatura cercana a la ambiente) o de un medio retermalizante ubicado en éste, como
es una fuente fría (a pocas decenas de °K). De esta forma disponemos de fuentes de neutrones térmicos o
fríos, los cuales permiten optimizar las condiciones experimentales para explorar las características
estructurales y dinámicas de una dada muestra. El nuevo reactor argentino de investigación, RA-10 [ 2],
estará equipado con moderadores de alta prestación con estas características [3].
Los neutrones interactúan con la materia a través de las cuatro fuerzas: fuerte, débil, electromagnética y
gravitatoria. Pero son las interacciones via dos de esas fuerzas, la interacción nuclear fuerte de corto alcance
y por su momento magnético las que convierten al neutrón en partícula de prueba única para el estudio de
los materiales. En particular, porque los neutrones no poseen carga eléctrica neta pueden penetrar
profundamente en la materia, y esta transparencia a los neutrones de los objetos metálicos los convierten
en una herramienta de gran utilidad para la ingeniería.
Un haz de neutrones incidentes sobre una muestra puede interactuar con ella de diferentes maneras, con
probabilidades determinadas por las correspondientes secciones eficaces. Así, como resultado de una
interacción un neutrón puede ser absorbido, dispersado o trasmitido por el material de la muestra, y
existen instrumentos especializados para registrar el espectro de neutrones emergentes. Tales instrumentos
son llamados “espectrómetros” cuando se realiza el análisis de ángulo y energía del neutrón dispersado, o
“difractómetros” cuando solamente la información angular es registrada.
La determinación de los arreglos atómicos es parte del conocimiento requerido sobre una muestra dada. La
respuesta a la pregunta “¿Cómo se mueven los átomos?” tiene también gran importancia en el
entendimiento de la funcionalidad de todo material. Tal respuesta es provista por la dispersión inelástica de
neutrones, al medir el cambio de energía sufrido en tal proceso. En los procesos de interacción, los
neutrones pueden absorber o entregar energía al sistema blanco, ya sea a los modos internos de vibración
en moléculas o excitaciones colectivas que pudieran ser sostenidas por aquél. Siendo que la energía misma
de los neutrones térmicos y fríos es del orden de las excitaciones cuánticas mencionadas, sus características
pueden ser investigadas con gran precisión a través de estos experimentos.
Las poderosas técnicas de dispersión inelástica de neutrones permiten determinar la intensidad y las
propiedades de las fuerzas interatómicas y acoplamientos magnéticos en un material, y este tipo de
conocimiento es relevante al entendimiento de la naturaleza difusiva de hidrógeno en materiales de
baterías, el origen atómico de la termoelectricidad o el acoplamiento magnético responsable de la
superconductividad en cupratos cerámicos. Experimentos de dispersión inelástica de neutrones fueron
cruciales para corroborar la existencia del ´Haldane gap´ en antiferromagnetos unidimensionales, una de las
motivaciones centrales para el otorgamiento del Premio Nobel de Física 2016 a Duncan Haldane [4].
En estudios de ciencia de materiales, se necesitan diferentes tipos de espectrómetros, por cuanto las
transferencias de energía e impulso accesibles dependen de la energía del neutrón incidente, y porque la
resolución y detección en diferentes instrumentos deben adecuarse a las condiciones que optimicen la
visibilidad de las propiedades bajo investigación.

El más versátil de estos instrumentos es el llamado “triple eje”, el cual se muestra esquemáticamente en la
Fig. 3:

Con ellos se observan simultáneamente las transferencias de energía e impulso sufridas por los neutrones
dispersados, las cuales están vinculadas entre sí por el ´factor de estructura dinámico´ S(Q,) característico
del sistema dispersor, que es en última instancia la magnitud que contiene la información estructural y
dinámica del mismo.
Además del estudio de las excitaciones colectivas de la red (fonones) – campo tradicional de
aplicación de estos instrumentos – el empleo de cristales polarizadores como monocromador y analizador
de polarización, permite el estudio de las excitaciones magnéticas en materiales o compuestos que
presenten magnetismo espontáneo o inducido.
Los espectrómetros de Triple Eje pueden ser ‘Fríos’ o ‘Calientes’ (ETEF o ETEC respectivamente),
denominación asociada al espectro de neutrones que emplean. El Triple Eje Frío recibe neutrones de una
fuente enfriada a unos -250 °C, mientras que el Triple Eje Térmico utiliza neutrones termalizados en agua
pesada a temperatura ambiente.

b) Introducción
Sin embargo, debe tenerse en cuenta que una descripción precisa de este último caso debe tomar en
cuenta una temperatura efectiva de los átomos que difiere sustancialmente de la temperatura
termodinámica, ya que toma en cuenta los grados de libertad internos moleculares. Esto a menudo se pasa
por alto en los cálculos de ingeniería nuclear, lo que provoca imprecisiones en los resultados. La dispersión
inelástica profunda de neutrones (DINS por “Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering”) proporciona una medición
directa de temperaturas efectivas, lo que hace esta técnica una potencial fuente de datos con aplicaciones
directas a la ingeniería. Además de su aplicación bien conocida en el estudio de la distribuciones de
momentos de los átomos que componen las muestras, las nuevas perspectivas que ofrece la técnica DINS a
la investigación aplicada fueron el foco de interés de un reciente Taller Internacional [6].
En línea con la idea de promover el uso de la técnica en Física Aplicada, ideamos un método para
determinar temperaturas efectivas en experimentos de DINS. También con esta premisa, hemos publicado
recientemente sobre la posibilidad de realizar mediciones simultáneas de transmisión y DINS en VESUVIO
[7].
Mediante mediciones en VESUVIO determinamos temperaturas efectivas por un análisis directo de los
espectros de tiempo de vuelo en detectores individuales. El modelo empleado en nuestro análisis
corresponde al de un ideal gas con una temperatura efectiva que da cuenta de los modos internos de
vibración molecular, en correspondencia con los cálculos usuales en ingeniería. También investigamos la
relación de nuestros resultados con la información más actualizada disponible, empleando cálculos de
ingeniería desarrollados en el Departamento de Física de Neutrones del Centro Atómico Bariloche. Los
procedimientos de análisis de los datos necesarios para pasar de los datos en bruto en escala de tiempo de
vuelo, a las temperaturas eficaces fueron la clave de este trabajo. El modus operandi incluye la sustracción
del fondo residual de los espectros medidos, las correcciones por dispersión múltiple y el ajuste de los
datos. Como consecuencia de este trabajo retomamos un viejo tema de la técnica DINS acerca de las
intensidades de los picos observados en mezclas de agua liviana y pesada, y su relación con las secciones
eficaces de dispersión de los átomos. Mostramos un acuerdo total con las secciones eficaces tabuladas
dando por concluida una vieja polémica iniciada hace casi 20 años.
En la Argentina, esta técnica fue implementada en la fuente de neutrones basada en el LINAC del
Departamento de Física de Neutrones del Centro Atómico Bariloche [8], habiéndose determinado
temperaturas efectivas y secciones eficaces de los átomos que componen el agua liviana y pesada. Los
trabajos realizados implicaron desarrollos metodológicos en la técnica para determinar valores absolutos de
secciones eficaces y temperaturas efectivas, zanjándose una controversia científica sobre esta técnica
acerca de supuestas anomalías en la sección [9]. Con la salida de servicio del LINAC de Bariloche, la
actividad continúa con trabajos en el espectrómetro VESUVIO de laboratorio ISIS (Rutherford Appleton
Laboratory, Reino Unido), a través del sistema regular de propuestas.
5. REQUERIMIENTOS DE DISEÑO
Para una dada configuración, el monocromador produce neutrones de una energía definida, la cual varía
con el ángulo de emergencia en diferentes configuraciones. El haz incidente con energía E i es dispersado
inelásticamente por la muestra con una distribución de energías E f , los cuales son detectados siempre que
Ef ≤ EF, siendo EF la energía de corte de un filtro neutrónico “pasa-bajos”. Existen instrumentos que emplean
Be o grafito policristalinos como filtros, explotando la ´transparencia´ de estos materiales para neutrones
con energías más bajas que el primer corte de Bragg en su sección eficaz total. Tal transparencia aumenta
significativamente si los filtros son enfriados.
6. CONSLUSIONES
Un amplio rango de disciplinas como las mencionadas se beneficiarían con un espectrómetro como ARTE.
