ROMA - Alfonso Cuarón

Biografía:
Alfonso Cuarón Orozco nació en Ciudad de México en 1961, es un director, guionista,
productor de cine, editor de cine y fotógrafo mexicano, Alfonso gano el Óscar al mejor
director por Gravity (2013) y Roma (2018). Es famoso por ser uno de los cineastas
mexicanos más destacados de su generación.
Cuarón comenzó dirigiendo la cinta “Sólo con tu pareja” en su país natal, agrego que
obtuvo el reconocimiento mundial con los filmes: “La princesita”, “Y tu mamá también”.
Después de lograr participar en producciones emblemáticas como “Harry Potter y el
prisionero de Azkaban”, “Hijos del hombre” y “Gravity”, filme donde también ganó el
Óscar al mejor director, siendo el primer director latinoamericano en obtener un Oscar al
mejor director; también ha ganado el Óscar al mejor montaje. Su película Roma, de 2018,
recibió múltiples condecoraciones.
En su familia brilla el talento y creatividad, su hijo, Jonás, y su hermano, Carlos Cuarón,
son directores y escritor. Mientras que su hija, Bo Cuarón, es cantante.

Críticos sobre Alfonso Cuarón:

Sus películas destacan por su cámara en constante movimiento, dicha técnica creo una
tendencia que proporciona al espectador una temporalidad real y un espacio que se percibe
real. Podemos apreciar dicha técnica en el filme “Children of Men”, la crítica lo ovaciono
por proveer un enfoque documental usando la cámara.
Los críticos pudieron apreciar la relación simbiótica entre el espectador y la acción en
pantalla que Cuarón recrea con su técnica de largas tomas en movimiento.
En la película “Gravity”, la crítica quedo satisfecha con su uso magistral de la luz y el
estudio en principios científicos que se refleja en el filme.
La mayoría de la critica ovaciono a Cuarón con su filme “Roma”, la exquisitez de los
detalles para recrear los años 70, es espectacular además que gano múltiples
condecoraciones por el filme Roma. Aunque existe un pequeño grupo de críticos que
califica a “Roma” como un filme que carece de trama y proyecta como algo saludable las
condiciones en las que trabaja Cleo, quizá sea la post cultura haciendo de las suyas con
respecto a la opinión de algunos críticos que pasan por alto toda la conjugación de técnicas
para crear el filme “Roma”.

El guion:
Cuarón tomo la decisión de crear el guion después del filme “Gravity” en el 2013. El guion
esta inspirado en hechos reales que vivió el propio Cuarón cuando era un niño. Cuarón
declaro que el guion esta ambientado en la década de los 70, porque los hechos ocurridos
en esa década, darán como resultado al México que hoy conocemos. Para la creación del
guion se realizó una investigación minuciosa de los hechos históricos de la época y se
entrevisto a personas con las que Alfonso Cuarón vivió en su infancia por medio de
llamadas telefónicas. El guion tiene como personaje principal a Cleo, una ayudante
doméstica, personaje inspirado en la ayudante domestica que vio crecer a Cuarón, el
nombre de esta mujer en la vida real es Liboria Rodríguez. El nombre del guion es Roma
por el nombre de la “Colonia Roma” que vio crecer a Alfonso Cuarón.

El casting:
Para seleccionar a los actores se tomó en cuenta contratar actores muy parecidos a la
familia de Alfonso Cuarón de los 70, para las ayudantes domesticas se tomo a la joven
Yaritza Aparicio, una mujer de ascendencia indígena que recibió el papel protagónico del
filme, hay que agregar que Yaritza en un principio no tenía preparación actoral, pero tiene
un gran potencial para interpretar el papel, ella aprendió el idioma mixteco para unos
diálogos en la película.

El rodaje:
Se realizo en el 2016 por la casa productora “Esperanto Filmoj” con un presupuesto de
quince millones de dólares, en el rodaje participaron empresas mexicanas. El rodaje duro 6
meces y se lo realizo de manera cronológica. Un detalle interesante es que los involucrados
en el rodaje no tenían conocimiento en el desenlace del filme, semana a semana se les
informaría de las próximas escenas y el guion.

Cámara y formatos:
Cuarón decidido tomar el cargo de director de fotografía, pues su primera opción no tenía
disponibilidad de tiempo y otra opción pudo ser un director de fotografía de habla inglesa,
pero Cuarón quería fluides entre el director de fotografía y el personal del rodaje.
La cámara que se uso tiene un formato de 65 milímetros Arri Rental Alexa65 y los lentes
usados son Prime 65, se usaron estas herramientas para presentar el producto final en cine
digital y streaming 4K

Efectos Visuales:
Se uso croma para recrear el fondo de muchos escenarios, esto ayudo a crear una
ambientación de la época orgánica y creíble. Fue un reto pulir la escena en la que Cleo
salva a los niños en la playa, esta escena se pulió usando efectos visuales. Se planteo que la
película sea a blanco y negro para apelar al contexto de la historia.

Dirección de Arte:
Eugenio Caballero fue el Director de Arte de esta película, el también vivió en la Colonia
Roma en los 70 en su infancia, por ende sabía que se necesitaría para ambientar la película
en los 70. Fue necesario contratar a Anna Terrazas para el vestuario y en el filme podemos
ver cómo hay una conjugación y armonía en ropa que se usaba en los 70 y en los 60 porque
en México aun se usaba dicha ropa aún. Para los carros que se ven el las calles, se tubo que
comprar y alquilar carros de los 50, 60 y 70. De esta forma se llego al realismo del México
de los 70, pues en dicha época se usaban corros de los 50, 60 y 70. Se investigo usando
fotos antiguas para ambientar la película en los 70, muchas de las edificaciones habían
cambiado, para lograr una recreación exacta se pidió al departamento de dirección de arte
crear dibujos y planos de como era la “Colonia Roma” en los 70. Estos dibujos fueron
enviados al departamento de Efectos Visuales para recrearlos con ayuda del croma. Para
decorar las calles se investigó que tipo de publicidades existía en los 70 en la “Colonia
Roma”, se pidieron permisos para colocar publicidades de los 70, con las marcas en cada
una de las publicidades como letreros de neón. Como se había planteado que la película sea
en Blanco y negro, se buscaba usar una escala de grises especifica que sea característica
para el filme, buscaba una escala de grises que sea el distintivo de la película “Roma”, por
ende, muchos de los muebles y objetos tenían que ser de una tonalidad especifica, aunque
el color del mueble desentone con el color real de la escenografía.
Para recrear la escena de la protesta se usaron varios actores de la localidad y se uso un
terreno vacío para construir algunas calles y lugares emblemáticos que ya no existen.

Sonido:
El sonido estuvo a cargo de Sergio Días, quien investigo que sonidos eran característicos en
los 70. Uno de los sonidos mas concurrentes, fueron los vendedores ambulantes
característicos de la Colonia Roma.

Locaciones:
Se tenia en mente filmar en el autentico departamento 21 donde vivió Alfonso Cuarón y su
familia, pero el lugar había sido remodelado en dos ocasiones y no tenia las condiciones
apropiadas para el rodaje, por ende, se tomó el departamento de enfrente, el departamento
22, que es muy similar al departamento 21, pero solo se uso el exterior, mientras que se
recreo un set para el interior de la casa. Se usaron tramos de calles que aun conserva la
arquitectura de los 70. Se uso el “Hospital de Especialidades de México” para las escenas
del hospital, porque este hospital aun conserva la fachada autentica de los años 70.

Critics about Alfonso Cuarón:

His films stand out for their constantly moving camera, this technique created a trend that

The script:

The casting:
To select the actors, it was taken into account hiring actors very similar to the family of
Alfonso Cuarón of the 70s, for the domestic helpers the young Yaritza Aparicio was taken,
a woman of indigenous descent who received the leading role in the film, you have to add
that Yaritza at first had no acting preparation, but has great potential to play the role, she
learned the Mixtec language for some dialogues in the film.

The filming:
It was made in 2016 by the production house "Esperanto Filmoj" with a budget of fifteen
million dollars, Mexican companies participated in the filming. The shooting lasted 6
months and I did it chronologically. An interesting detail is that those involved in the
filming had no knowledge of the outcome of the film, week by week they would be
informed of the next scenes and the script.

Camera and formats:

Cuarón decided to take the position of cinematographer, since his first option had no time
availability and another option could be an English-speaking cinematographer, but Cuarón
wanted fluidity between the cinematographer and the filming staff.
The camera used has a 65 mm format Arri Rental Alexa65 and the lenses used are Prime
65, these tools were used to present the final product in digital cinema and 4K streaming

Visual effects:
Chroma was used to recreate the background of many settings, this helped to create an
organic and believable period setting. It was a challenge to polish the scene where Cleo
saves the children on the beach, this scene was polished using visual effects. It was
proposed that the film be black and white to appeal to the context of the story.

Art direction:
Eugenio Caballero was the Art Director of this film, he also lived in Colonia Roma in the
70s in his childhood, therefore he knew that it would be needed to set the film in the 70s. It
was necessary to hire Anna Terrazas for the costumes and in In the film we can see how
there is a conjugation and harmony in clothes that were used in the 70s and 60s because in
Mexico such clothes were still used. For the cars that are seen on the streets, you had to buy
and rent cars from the 50s, 60s and 70s. In this way, the realism of the Mexico of the 70s
was reached, because at that time they used circles from the 50s, 60s and 70.
It was investigated using old photos to set the film in the 70s, many of the buildings had
changed, to achieve an exact recreation the art direction department was asked to create
drawings and plans of what the "Colonia Roma" was like in the 70. These drawings were
sent to the Visual Effects department to recreate them with the help of chroma.
To decorate the streets, it was investigated what type of advertisements existed in the
"Colonia Roma" in the 70s, permits were requested to place advertisements from the 70s,
with the brands in each of the advertisements as neon signs. As it had been proposed that
the film be in Black and White, it was sought to use a specific gray scale that is
characteristic for the film, it sought a gray scale that is the hallmark of the film "Rome",
therefore, many of the Furniture and objects had to be of a specific tonality, although the
color of the furniture was out of tune with the real color of the scenery.
To recreate the protest scene, several local actors were used and an empty lot was used to
build some streets and emblematic places that no longer exist.

Sound:
The sound was in charge of Sergio Dias, who investigated what sounds were characteristic
in the 70s. One of the most popular sounds was the characteristic street vendors of Colonia
Roma.

Locations:
They had in mind to film in the authentic apartment 21 where Alfonso Cuarón and his
family lived, but the place had been remodeled twice and it did not have the appropriate
conditions for filming, therefore, the apartment across the street, department 22, was
taken. , which is very similar to department 21, but only the exterior was used, while a set
was recreated for the interior of the house. Sections of streets that still preserve the
architecture of the 70s were used. The "Hospital de Especialidades de México" was used
for the hospital scenes, because this hospital still preserves the authentic facade of the 70s.
