The right portal vein divides into two parts: anterior and posterior. The anterior branch of the right portal vein
further subdivides into ascending (for segment VIII) and descending (for segment V). The posterior branch also
divides into ascending (for segment VII) and descending (for segment VI).

The left portal vein also displays a unique subdivision. Two branches from its lateral side supply segments II
and III. The vein, however, continues to supply segment IV.
