Cómo  ya  expliqué  en  la  megaguía  actualizada  del  ​Speaking  del  B1  de 
Cambridge  (cambios  de  2020),  el  examen  de  Speaking  del  PET  se 
compone  de  4  partes  bien  diferenciadas,  y  entre  ellas  se encuentra la 
parte  2,  en  la  que  debes  ​describir  una  foto  en  inglés​.  Esto  es 
relativamente  fácil, pero suele ocurrir que los candidatos, de primeras 
no  suelen  saber  ​cómo  describir  una  foto  ni  en  su  propio  idioma,  así 
que  mucho  menos  en  inglés  si  su  nivel  ronda  un  B1,  es  decir,  un  nivel 
intermedio o intermedio-bajo.  

Por  eso,  en  este  post  voy  a  enseñarte  exactamente  ​cómo  debes 
describir  una  imagen  ​para  triunfar  en  el  Speaking  del  B1  Preliminary 
(PET),  y un montón de trucos y expresiones en inglés que te serán muy 
útiles para hacerlo.  

Cómo es la Parte 2 del Speaking del B1 

Lo  primero  que  debes  saber  es  qué esperar en esta parte del examen. 
Como  puedes  leer  en  la  guía  que  he  enlazado  al  principio  de  este 
artículo,  el  interlocutor  (examinador)  va  a  pedirte  que  describas  una 
imagen, y lo va a hacer de la siguiente forma: 

Now  I'd  like  each  of you to talk on your own about something. 

I'm  going  to  give  each  of  you  a photograph and I'd like you to 
talk about it. 

Candidate  A,  here  is  your  photograph.  It  shows  ​people  at  a 
party​.

Candidate  A,  please  tell  us  what  you  can  see  in  the 
photograph. 

Y  en  ese  momento,  el  candidato  tiene  ​1  minuto  para  describir  la 
imagen.  Así  que  veamos  cómo  debe  describirla,  los  pasos  y  la 
estrategia  que  debe  seguir.  Para  ello,  nos  basaremos  en  la  imagen 
superior para construir una descripción completa de cabo a rabo.

Cómo describir una foto en inglés 

Estructura para describir cualquier foto 
Describir  una  foto  no  es  difícil,  pero  sólo  si  sabes  cómo.  En  este 
sentido,  lo más importante es tener siempre una ​estructura fija que te 
permita describir cualquier imagen​. Y aunque no existe una estructura 
correcta  y  otra  incorrecta,  sí  que  puedo  decirte  que  ​lo  que  mejor 
funciona  es  una  descripción  que  va  desde  lo  más  general  a  lo  más 
específico​.  Por  eso,  te  recomiendo  la  que  yo  utilizo  para  preparar  a 
mis  alumnos  y  que  funciona  de  maravilla.  Ésta  se  divide  en  las 
siguientes partes:  

1. Descripción global breve​: hablamos de la escena en sí, sin 

centrarnos en ningún detalle en particular.  

2. Descripción larga​: nos centramos en los detalles, siempre desde 

los más generales a los más específicos.  

3. Especulación​: inferimos ideas de cosas que vemos en la imagen.  

4. Detalles menos relevantes 

Y  aunque  yo  divida  la  descripción  larga  y  la  especulación  en  partes 
diferentes, lo más natural es que se mezclen entre ellas.

Cómo comenzar una descripción de una foto 

Lo  primero  que  debes  tener  claro  es  cómo  empezar  a  describir  una 
foto,  sea  cual  sea.  Y  yo  recomiendo  siempre  comenzar  con  una  sola 
oración que responda a las siguientes preguntas: 

● Who? 

● Doing what? 

● Where?  

● When?​ (opcional) 

Por ejemplo: 

● Who​: ​an Asian family  

● Doing what​: h
​ aving lunch 

● Where​: i​ n their garden 

● When​: a
​ beautiful sunny day

Y  para  introducir  dicha  oración,  siempre  puedes  utilizar  una  de  las 
siguientes expresiones: 

● In this picture, I can see... 

● This picture shows... 

No  tienes  que  complicarte  más.  Simplemente  memoriza  una  de  esas 
expresiones  y  hazlo  siempre  de  la misma forma. Así que, en este caso, 
nuestra descripción comenzaría de la siguiente forma: 

In  this  picture,  I  can  see  an  Asian  family  having  lunch  in  their  garden. 
And it's a beautiful sunny day.  

BOOM!  Ya  tenemos  la  primera  oración.  Y  este  tipo  de  introducción 
puede  utilizarse  con  TODAS  las  imágenes  que  pueden  aparecer  en  el 
B1 de Cambridge.​ I promise!

Cómo describir los detalles de una foto 

Como  ya  he  dicho  más  arriba,  lo  importante  es  que  nuestro  discurso 
vaya  desde  lo  más  general  a  lo  más  específico.  Por  eso,  ahora  tienes 
que preguntarte qué es lo más importante. 

Por  ejemplo,  en  la  foto  que  tenemos  debajo,  qué  es  más  importante: 
¿la  familia  o  los  árboles  de  fondo?  ¿que  están  sentados  alrededor  de 
una  mesa  o  que  la mujer tiene un ramo de flores? En función de cómo 
respondas  en  tu  cabeza  a  estas  preguntas,  tu  descripción  será  más  o 
menos lógica. 

Yo te propongo la siguiente descripción larga: 

There  are  five  people  in  the  picture:  three  of  them  are  sitting  around  a 
table and two of them are standing up. They all seem very happy.  

On  the  table,  there  are  plenty  of  dishes  with  food  and  some  glasses 
with orange juice. I can also see a bottle of water on the left.

Con  esto  ya  tenemos  la  escena  principal  prácticamente  descrita,  por 
lo  que  ahora  pasaremos  a  especular  sobre  cosas  que  podemos 
deducir a partir de algunos elementos de la foto. 

Cómo especular sobre una escena 

Especular,  en  este  caso,  simplemente  significa  sacar  ideas  de  cosas 
que  pueden  estar  pasando  en  una  foto.  Por  ejemplo,  aquí  podríamos 
decir algo así: 

The  man  in  the  middle  looks  older  than  the  others,  so  he  might  a 
grandfather  and  the  other  people  could  be  his  children  and 
grandchildren.  

The  man  on  the  left  is  holding  a present and the woman on the right is 

holding  some  flowers,  so  I  believe  it  might  be  someone's  birthday  or 
anniversary. That's probably why they are all so happy.

Detalles menos relevantes 

Para  finalizar,  si  ya  has  descrito  la  escena  principal  al  completo  y  has 
especulado  sobre  lo  que  puede  estar  pasando,  puedes  hablar 
también  de  otros  detalles  no  tan  importantes  como  son  los 
siguientes: 

● El tiempo 

● El fondo de la foto 

It  must  be  summer  or  spring,  because  it's  really  sunny  and  the  family 
are all wearing short sleeves. 

In  the  background,  I  can  see  some  grass,  a  few  trees  and  the 
neighbour's houses. 

Y  listo,  ya  tenemos  una  descripción  completa  de  esta  imagen.  ¡A  que 
así explicado y desglosado parece mucho más fácil!

imágenes. La que yo utilizo con mis alumnos. :-) 

Consejos y expresiones para describir una foto en inglés 

A  continuación  he  compilado  una  serie  de  consejos,  técnicas  y 
expresiones  útiles  para  describir  una  foto  para  el  Speaking  del  PET. 
Las tienes divididas en las siguientes categorías: 

● Estructura:​ utiliza ​siempre​ la misma estructura. De esta manera, 

no tendrás que pensar en cómo describir una foto sino 
solamente en qué vocabulario utilizar.  

● Tiempos verbales:​ para describir una foto de manera básica 

necesitas dos tiempos verbales únicamente:  

○ Presente simple​: T
​ his picture ​shows​ a family...  

○ Presente continuo: T
​ hey ​are having​ lunch in the garden... 

● Verbos útiles:​ los siguientes verbos casi siempre pueden 

utilizarse.  

○ There is/are...:​ ​There's​ a lot of food on the table. 

○ is/are holding:​ ​The man on the left ​is holding​ a present.  

○ is/are standing:​ T
​ he woman ​is standing​ on the right.  

○ is/are sitting:​ ​... three of them a

​ re sitting​ around a table.  

○ is/are lying:​ ​There's a woman lying on the sofa. 

● Adjetivos descriptivos:​ ​a beautiful sunny day​ suena mucho mejor 

que a
​ sunny day​.

● Evita pausas largas:​ intenta decir algo como ​let me think​ o ​let me 
see​ cuando necesites algo de tiempo para pensar.  

● Verbos y expresiones para especular: 

○ look/seem + adjective:​ ​They look quite happy. 

○ look/seem like + noun:​ They seem like a family.  

○ seem to be doing:​ They seem to be celebrating a birthday or 

anniversary. 

○ maybe/probably:​ Maybe/Probably it's the grandfather's 

birthday. 

○ could/may/might be:​ The man in the middle might be the 

grandfather. 

○ must be:​ It must be someone's birthday or anniversary. 

○ I think/believe:​ I think they are celebrating someone's 

birthday or anniversary. 

● Justifica siempre tus especulaciones​: ​They seem to be celebrating 

a birthday or anniversary. I say so because these two people are 
holding a present and some flowers. 

● Tiempo y estación:​ casi siempre puedes hablar del tiempo o la 

estación del año, pero déjalo para el final si no tiene especial 
importancia en la imagen.  

● Partes de una imagen:​ ​si crees necesario​ mencionar algo que hay 
en algún sitio en particular de la foto, puedes utilizar las 
siguientes expresiones:

● Preposiciones de lugar básicas: 

○ on / in / under  

○ next to / behind / in front of / opposite 

○ over / above / below 

● Expresiones útiles aleatorias:​ en esta subcategoría voy a darte 

unas cuantas expresiones que suelen ser bastante útiles porque 
las puedes utilizar en casi cualquier descripción.  

○ a group of people 

○ sitting around a table

condiciones, veamos algunos ejemplos.

Ejemplos de descripción de fotos para el PET 

Como  ya  hemos  visto  cómo  describir  una  imagen  paso  a  paso,  ahora 
vamos  a  ver  varios  ejemplos  de  descripciones  de  fotos  para  que  te 
hagas  a  la  idea  mejor  cómo  hacerlo  tú.  De  hecho,  te  animo  a  que 
pruebes  a  describirlas  antes  de  leer  la  descripción  que  yo  mismo  he 
escrito. 

Fíjate  cómo  las  expresiones  que  he  destacado  en  negrita  son 
expresiones que te he dado en la lista del apartado anterior. :-) 

This  pictures  shows  ​a  group  of  ​young  people  (​who​?)  having  a 
meeting (​doing what​?) in an office (​where​?).  

There  are  four  women  and  three  men.  Three  of  them  ​are 
sitting  down  on  a  sofa  and  three  of  them  ​are  standing  up

behind  it.  ​In  the  centre​,  there  is  a  beautiful woman explaining 

something,  and  the  other  people  ​seem  to  be  ​listening  to  her. 
Maybe​ she's the boss and the others are her employees.  

In  front  of  her​,  there's  a  table  with  a  laptop,  a  pen  and  some 
paper.  The  woman  ​on  the  right​,  ​in  the  foreground​,  ​might  be 
taking some notes.  

In  the  background​,  ​on  the  right​,  I  can  see  a  large  piece  of 
furniture  with  some small plants. There's also a glass wall and 
a door.  

In  this  picture,  I  can  see  two  children  taking  a  photo  in  the 
countryside.

football pitch on a sunny day.  

I  can  see  4  or 5 teenage boys, divided in two teams. One of the 

teams  is  wearing  read  and  white  T-shirts  and  shorts,  whereas 
the other team's kit is black and white. 

In  the  centre  of  the  picture​, there are two boys fighting for the 

ball,  and  ​behind  them  ​there's  another  player looking at them. 
He's a little chubby. They are all playing on a grass pitch.  

In  the  background,  I  can  see  the  goal  and  the  goalkeeper,  as 
well  as  a  lot  of  vegetation,  especially  trees.  It's  a  ​beautiful 
sunny  day​,  but  ​I  think  it  must  be  too  hot  to  play  football, 
because it's p
​ robably​ summertime.

bastante  sólida  sobre  la  que  pueden  describir  cualquier  imagen  que 
les toque en el examen.
