Los últimos vencejos revolean The last swifts are circling
en torno al campanario; around the bell tower;
los niños gritan, saltan, se pelean. children are shouting, jumping and scuffling.
En su rincón, Martín el solitario. A solitary Martin, in his corner.
¡La tarde, casi noche, polvorienta, The dusty afternoon, almost over,
la algazara infantil, y el vocerío, the childish uproar and the hubbub,
a la par, de sus doce en sus cincuenta! their twelve years of life next to his fifty!
* *
¡Oh alma plena y espíritu vacío, A full soul and an empty spirit,
ante la turbia hoguera before the smoking fire
con llama restallante de raíces, with the crackling of burning roots,
fogata de frontera a campfire on the borderland
que ilumina las hondas cicatrices! that sheds light on his deep scars!
* *
Quien se vive se pierde, Abel decía. Whoever lives, is lost, Abel would say.
¡Oh, distancia, distancia!, que la estrella Oh, far away, far away!, the guiding star
que nadie toca, guía. that no one reaches.
¿Quién navegó sin ella? Who has ever sailed without it?
Distancia para el ojo—¡oh lueñe nave!— Distance for the eye—oh faraway boat!—
ausencia al corazón empedernido, absence for the hardened heart,
y bálsamo suave and a gentle balm
con la miel del amor, sagrado olvido. with the honey of love, sacred forgetfulness.
¡Oh gran saber del Cero, del maduro The great wisdom of the Zero, of the ripe
fruto, sabor que sólo el hombre gusta, fruit, whose taste only man can savor,
agua de sueño, manantial oscuro, water of dreams, a dark well-spring,
sombra divina de la mano augusta! a divine shadow cast by the exalted hand!
Antes me llegue, si me llega, el Día, On the Day—the uncreated light that sees—
la luz que ve, increada, before it arrives, if it does arrive, Lord,
ahógame esta mala gritería, drown out my selfish whining,
Señor, con las esencias de tu Nada. with the essence of your Nothingness.

Viví, dormí, soñé y hasta he creado I lived, I slept, I dreamed and even created
—pensó Martín, ya turbia la pupila— —Martin thought, as his eyes grew dim—
un hombre que vigila a man who watched over
el sueño, algo mejor que lo soñado. sleep, something better than just dreaming.
Mas si un igual destino But if the same fate
aguarda al soñador y al vigilante, awaits the dreamer and the watcher,
a quien trazó caminos, the one who traced out the roads,
y a quien siguió caminos, jadeante, and the one who followed them, heedlessly,
al fin, sólo es creación tu pura nada, then the only creation is your pure nothingness,
tu sombra de gigante, your gigantic shadow,
el divino cegar de tu mirada. the divine concealment of your gaze.

Y sucedió a la angustia la fatiga, And after his anguish he felt the fatigue
que siente su esperar desesperado, caused by his desperate anticipation,
la sed que el agua clara no mitiga, the thirst that water does not satisfy,
la amargura del tiempo envenenado. the bitterness of an impure life.
¡Esta lira de muerte! This lyre of death!
Abel palpaba Abel’s hand felt
su cuerpo enflaquecido. his weakened body.
¿El que todo lo ve no le miraba? Wasn’t the one-who-sees-all watching him?
¡Y esta pereza, sangre del olvido! And this apathy, the blood of oblivion!
¡Oh, sálveme, Señor! Please save me, Lord!
Su vida entera, His entire life,
su historia irremediable aparecía his unalterable history, appeared before him
escrita en blanda cera. written in soft wax.
¿Y ha de borrarte el sol del nuevo día? And will you be eclipsed by the sun of a new day?
Abel tendió su mano Abel reached out his hand
hacia la luz bermeja toward the vermillion light
de una caliente aurora de verano, of a warm summer dawn,
ya en el balcón de su morada vieja. now on the threshold of his former abode.
Ciego, pidió la luz que no veía. Blind, he asked for the light he could not see.
Luego llevó, sereno, Then he calmly lifted up
el limpio vaso, hasta su boca fría, to his cold mouth the clear glass,
de pura sombra—¡oh, pura sombra!—lleno. with pure shadow—yes, pure shadow!—overflowing.

¡Oh cámaras del tiempo y galerías Oh, chambers of time and corridors
del alma tan desnudas!, of the soul, how naked!,
dijo el poeta. De los claros días the poet said. The silent shadows
pasan las sombras mudas. of bright days are passing by.
Se apaga el canto de las viejas horas The music of the old hours dies out
cual rezo de alegrías enclaustradas; like a prayer of cloistered joys.
el tiempo lleva un desfilar de auroras Time brings a parade of dawns,
con séquito de estrellas empañadas. with a trail of extinguished stars.
¿Un mundo muere? ¿Nace Is a world dying? Is a world
un mundo? ¿En la marina being born? In the watery
panza del globo hace belly of the planet is another ship
nueva nave su estela diamantina? leaving its diamantine wake?
¿Quillas al sol la vieja flota yace? Has the old fleet turned belly up?
¿Es el mundo nacido en el pecado, Is it the world that was born in sin,
el mundo del trabajo y la fatiga? the world of toil and weariness?
¿Un mundo nuevo para ser salvado A new world that must be saved
otra vez? ¡Otra vez! Que Dios lo diga. again? Again! May God tell us.
Calló el poeta, el hombre solitario, The poet, a lonely man, was silent
porque un aire de cielo aterecido because a cold wind out of the sky
le amortecía el fino estradivario. muted his delicate Stradivarius.
Sangrábale el oído. His ears were bleeding.
Desde la cumbre vio el desierto llano From the heights he saw the deserted plain
con sombras de gigantes con escudos, with shadows of giants bearing shields,
y en el verde fragor del oceano and in the green clamor of the ocean
torsos de esclavos jadear desnudos. the naked torsos of panting slaves.
Y un nihil de fuego escrito And a nihil of fiery letters written
tras de la selva huraña, on the sheer granite
en áspero granito, beyond the hostile forest,
y el rayo de un camino en la montaña… and the ribbon of a road on the mountainside…
