Would es un verbo auxiliar que se usa en inglés para hablar sobre situaciones hipotéticas en
afirmativo, negativo e interrogativo, regularmente en el segundo condicional en inglés.
Would : afirmativo
Pues literalmente la palabra “would” no significa nada. SIN EMBARGO, se usa para crear las
terminaciones –ría (correrías), –rías (saltarías), –ríamos (llamaríamos), –ríais (dormiríais) y –rían
(reirían).
I would run the marathon if I had time. / Correría la maratón si tuviera tiempo.
We would call him if we knew his phone number. / Lo llamaríamos si supiéramos su número de
teléfono
Ahora intenta identificar y entender la diferencia en los tiempos verbales de las siguientes dos
oraciones:
I read the newspaper every day. / Leo el periódico todos los días.
I would read the newspaper every day. / Leería el periódico todos los días.
El tiempo verbal del ejemplo 1 es el presente simple (Yo leo / I read). Por otro lado, el ejemplo 2
contiene “would”, lo cual hace que el verbo tenga la terminación “leería”.
Además, es importante notar que las dos oraciones se usarían en contextos totalmente diferentes.
El primer ejemplo se puede usar cuando hablamos de rutinas (yo leo). Mientras que el segundo,
en una situación hipotética; por ejemplo:
Leería el periódico si tuviera dinero para comprarlo. / I would read the newspaper if I had money
to buy it.
¿Cómo se usa?
Existen dos aspectos importantes: (1) Este auxiliar se usa en afirmativo
o en negativo para todos los pronombres personales sin excepción
alguna; (2) después de “would” debemos usar la forma base del verbo:
run, play, call, listen. Ejemplos:
o It would listen: Escucharía
Affirmative:
o I’d: I would
o She’d: she would
o They’d: they would
Should
Verbos modales: 'Should'
"Should" es un auxiliar modal. Tiene varios usos (condicional, dar
consejos, deber u obligación débil...).
Como verbo auxiliar comparte las características de los modales:
- Va seguido de un verbo en infinitivo sin "to", excepto be able to, need
to, have to y ought to.
- La tercera persona del singular no lleva -s en el presente simple.
- No necesita añadir el auxiliar do/does para la forma interrogativa y
negativa.
- No tiene infinitivo.
