ABSTRACT
This paper describes the reliability and validity of the Spanish adaptation of
the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; Beck, Steer & Brown, 1996) in a sam-
ple of 305 outpatients with a range of DSM-IV diagnoses. The internal consis-
tency of the instrument was high (alpha = 0.89). Pearson correlations with
other self-report and interview-based measures of depression were high and
significantly higher than the correlation with a self-report measure of anxiety,
hence supporting respectively the convergent and discriminant validities of the
BDI-II. As for criterion validity, our results showed that major depression
patients scored higher on the BDI-II than the rest of the participating groups,
with the only exception of patients diagnosed with a personality disorder.
Finally, the factorial validation of the BDI-II showed a two-factor solution
(somatic-motivational and cognitive factors) that replicates findings in other
studies. In sum, the Spanish adaptation of the BDI-II is a valid instrument for
screening depression and to quantify depressive symptoms in psychiatric
patients, although its utility as a differential diagnostic tool for depression is an
unresolved question needing research.
