English Department. Semestre I

The Simple present and the present continuous have to be differentiated because they
might seem similar, but they are used in different contexts. Let’s see the following
chart, when do we use simple present or present continuous?

Simple Present Present Continuous (progressive)

S+V+C S + am/is/are + V(-ing) + C
Express General Truths Describe actions happening at the moment
It never rains in the dessert We are reading

Describe habits Express annoying habits

You clean your bedroom everyday You are always bothering me

Describe permanent States Express temporary States

I like Harry Potter’s movies I’m working with them until the end of the
month

Simple Present
The simple present tense is formed by the subject, the verb, and the complement, and when
the subject is one of the pronouns He/ She /it we have to add an –s at the end of the verb.

Affirmative: In the affirmative sentences we describe situations, facts or sentences that

are positive and true.
Example:

I run fast REMEMBER

When we refer to
It rains a lot He/She /It
They go with an –s at the
end of the verb.
