ABLE TO

¿QUÉ SIGNIFICA?
Significa SER CAPAZ DE y PODER. Se usa en todos los tiempos verbales. Aquí
encontramos una de las grandes diferencias: BE ABLE TO se usa en todos los
tiempos verbales; Can sólo en presente simple y Could sólo en pasado simple.

¿CÓMO SE USA?

¿Qué hacemos en los casos donde no podemos usar ni can ni could? Para suplir
estas limitaciones, tenemos la construcción be able to. Por ejemplo:

 Futuro simple: I will be able to speak English by the time I’m thirty (Cuando
cumpla treinta años podré/sabré hablar inglés).
 Presente perfecto: I have been able to read in English for a long time (He
podido/sabido leer en inglés desde hace mucho tiempo).

¿PARA QUÉ NOS SIRVE?

- Para referirnos al futuro, se utiliza "will be able to".
- Para referirnos al pasado se utiliza "was/were able to

No voy a ser capaz de alzar a mis hijos.

No voy a ser capaz de llamarle.
