After a complex and slow process of separating plates and continents until
reaching what is now South America, two daughters of Gondwana emerged: The
Shield of Brasil and The Shield of Guiana. This last one occupies the region at the
south of the Orinoco and the north of the Amazon river; From the Colombo-
Venezuelan plains to the west and the Atlantic Sea to the east, including Guiana,
Surinam, French Guiana and a part of Brasil. This means that the Guiana Shield is
one of the five daughters of Gondwana, the oldest land in the world.
But as there is even more wealth, in 1913, on the banks of the Caroni, in the area
of El Guri, now occupied by the Raúl Leoni dam, the first diamonds are obtained.
Santa Elena de Uairén is born. Then there would come the history of Jimmy Angel,
another diamond searcher, who lands with its Flamingo G-2-W on the Auyantepui,
destroying the light aircraft in 1937, but discovering the highest cascade of the
world. An inventory of 16 million cubic meters of wood begins to suffer irreparable
consequences. The plant formation of this territory, which has taken 3 billion years
to form, in 300 years the man has left his destructive footprint too visible. So from
fever to fever, in just three centuries, the “civilized” human being has been turning
the “green hell” into a “red desert”.
