Introduction
This glossary contains a set of terms used in the medical career with their
examples and their respective pronunciation. The objective of this glossary is to
facilitate the determination of each definition of some terms used in Medicine.

1. Abduction - noun

Abducción
Definition: the movement by which a member or an organ moves away from the
middle plane that imaginably divides the body into two symmetrical parts.
Definición: Movimiento por el cual un miembro o un órgano se aleja del plano
medio que divide imaginariamente el cuerpo en dos partes simétricas.
Example: Luis has problems synchronizing his upper limbs, in each medical
evaluation he always abducts.
Ejemplo: Luis tiene problemas para la sincronización de sus miembros
superiores, en cada evaluación medica siempre él hace abducción.
2. Anabolism – noun

Definition: Set of chemical reactions of the synthesis metabolism of complex
chemical compounds, from simple molecules through chemical reduction
reactions in which requires energy in the form of ATP
Definición: Conjunto de reacciones químicas del metabolismo de síntesis de
compuestos químicos complejos, a partir de moléculas sencillas mediante
reacciones químicas de reducción en las que se requiere energía en forma de
ATP.
Example: Enzymes deteriorate food causing anabolism

Definition: They are drugs that eliminate or decrease the pain without causing
major changes of consciousness or other sensations.
Definición: Son fármacos que eliminan o disminuyen el dolor sin provocar

Example: Luis had a severe headache; the nurse gave him an analgesic and
hours later he felt better.
Ejemplo: Luis tenía un fuerte dolor de cabeza, la enfermera le dio un analgésico

4. Anemia – noun

Anemia
Definition: It is the decrease of hemoglobin in red blood cells or circulating
erythrocytes in the blood, in relation to a value established as adequate by the
World Health Organization according to age and sex.
Definición: Es la disminución de la hemoglobina en los glóbulos rojos o
eritrocitos circulantes en la sangre, en relación con un valor establecido como
adecuado por la Organización Mundial de la Salud según edad y sexo.
Example: Alicia was dying out in a delirium of anemia, every day she looked
weaker, until her body rested and she died.
Ejemplo: Alicia fue extinguiéndose en subdelirio de anemia, cada día se veía
más débil, hasta que su cuerpo llano resistió y ella falleció.
5. Anesthesia - noun

Anestesia
Definition: Temporary absence of the sensitivity of a part of the body or of its
totality caused by the administration of a chemical substance, by hypnosis or as a
cause of a disease.
Definición: Ausencia temporal de la sensibilidad de una parte del cuerpo o de su
totalidad provocada por la administración de una sustancia química, por la
hipnosis o como causa de una enfermedad.
Example: Lucia says that when she was given anesthesia, she feels numbness
throughout her body.
Ejemplo: Lucía cuenta que cuando le administraron la anestesia siente
adormecimiento en todo su cuerpo.
6. Aneurysm – noun

Aneurisma
Definition: It is a localized and permanent dilation that occurs in the walls of the
arteries. This abnormal dilation is caused by the weakness of the wall of an area
of the blood vessel.
Definición: Es una dilatación localizada y permanente que se produce en las
paredes de las arterias. Esta dilatación anormal se produce por la debilidad de
la pared de una zona del vaso sanguíneo.
Example: The newly operated patient of an aneurysm was an influential thirty-
eight-year-old businessman named Gary Garrison, who was already awake and
lucid.

7. Appendicitis – noun

Definition: It is the inflammation of the cecal or vermiform appendix, which
begins with obstruction of the appendicular lumen, which results in an increase
in intraluminal pressure due to the accumulation of mucus associated with poor
serous elasticity

Definition: Arteries are vessels through which blood flows from the heart to
tissues with oxygen and the nutrients required for the human body. The arteries
are born in the heart and branch into intermediate diameter muscular arteries

tejidos con el oxígeno y los nutrientes requeridos para el cuerpo humano. Las

Definition: Chronic inflammatory airway disease, characterized by inflammation,
bronchial hyperactivity leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing and
bronchospasm, is manifested by cough, dyspnea, chest tightness, wheezing,
associated with variable airflow limitation that is often spontaneously reversible or
with treatment.

Definition: Hormone made by the islet cells of the pancreas. Insulin controls the
amount of sugar in the blood by storing it in the cells, where the body can use it
as a source of energy.
Definición: Hormona elaborada por las células de los islotes del páncreas. La

células, donde el cuerpo la puede usar como fuente de energía.
Example: Mr. Pedro suffers from diabetes so he have had to accept insulin

from ovulation, the ovules stop producing the hormones estrogen, progesterone

naturally, most often after age 45.

porque presenta problemas para dormir, sudoración nocturna y cambios en las
menstruaciones.

Definition: It is a paralysis of the lower half of the body that is due to a nerve
injury in the brain or spinal cord. It is usually the result of spinal cord injury or a
congenital disease such as spina bifida.

can affect the sigmoid colon and may be the site of chronic inflammatory bowel
diseases such as Crohn's disease or hemorrhagic rectocolitis, or the site of
acute colitis.
Example: Lizeth has crohn's disease, a disease that affects his sigmodeum
when pain, fatigue, nausea, loss of pace and others.

Definition: It is located under the larynx and on the sides of the trachea, it is
made up of a pair of lobes that remember the appearance of butterflies, which
are joined by an isthmus, also called the thyroid gland that helps regulate
growth and metabolism.

Definition: It is a
thymus tumor, a lymphoid organ located behind the upper part of the sternum.
The space between both lungs is included within the mediastinal tumors. The
mediastinum is limited earlier by the sternum and later by the dorsal vertebrae.

Definition: It is an
inflammation of the
vagina that can
cause discharge, itching and pain. Usually, the cause is a change in the normal
balance of bacteria in the vagina or an infection. Reduced estrogen levels after
menopause and some skin disorders can also cause vaginitis.
Example: the women are the most likely to have infections, the most common is
vaginitis.
Ejemplo: Las mujeres somos las más propensas en tener infecciones, la más
común es la vaginitis.

Conclusions
This glossary was developed with the purpose of supporting and allowing us to
understand the different terms in the Human Medicine career
I consider that the glossary material is important to have a good management of more
ordered and fast data
