1.1 The purpose of this document is to define a testing procedure for conducting
hydrostatic pressure tests.
1.2 The purpose of hydrostatic pressure testing is to verify the absence of leakage
through the walls of an item or from the joints formed by an assembly of items by
applying a controlled pressure in excess of the rated working pressure of the
item under test.

4.0 Materials
4.3 Plugs
5.1.1 Items to be tested shall be free from grease, oil, and other contaminants.
5.1.4 Items to be tested and the gage lines shall be vented and completely
filled with the test fluid. All air shall be vented from the items.
5.1.5 The test fluid shall be clean water at ambient temperature. A controlled
rust inhibitor shall be added to the test fluid when necessary.
5.2.1 The test pressure shall be 1.5 times the maximum allowable working
pressure (MAWP) of the tested item unless otherwise negotiated between
the manufacturer and purchaser. The test shall not be less than 1.3 times
the MAWP.
5.2.2 For items used on UL and/or FM certified fire pumps, the test pressure
shall be a minimum of 2 times the tested item’s maximum design working
pressure. However, the test pressure shall not be less than 250 psi.
5.2.3 For chemical process pumps, the test pressure shall be 1.5 times the
maximum design working pressure corresponding to 100°F for the
material of construction used.
PAGE
American-Marsh Pumps NUMBER: TP-1080 REV: 1 3 of 4
5.3.1 The test pressure shall be maintained a sufficient amount of time for a
complete inspection of the tested items for leakage.
5.3.2 Per ANSI/HI 14.6-2016, the minimum test duration based on the tested
item’s pressure rating shall be as follows: 5 minutes for a MAWP
up to 145 psi, 10 minutes for a MAWP from 145 psi to 360 psi,
and 30 minutes for a MAWP above 360 psi.
5.3.3 For items used on UL and/or FM certified fire pumps, the test duration
shall be a minimum of 5 minutes.
5.3.4 For chemical process pumps, the test duration shall be a minimum of 10
minutes.
5.4.1 Prior to starting the test, verify the external walls of the items to be tested
are completely dry.
5.4.3 The test pressure determined in section 5.1 shall be maintained constant
for the test duration. The calibrated timer shall be used to monitor the test
duration.
5.4.4 Continuous observation shall be maintained for the test duration to detect
any leakage on the external walls.
5.4.5 At the end of the test duration, the hydrostatic pressure shall be
decreased in a controlled manner until the items return to atmospheric
pressure.
5.4.6 The items tested shall be completely drained of the test fluid and dried.
6.1 The integrity of the items tested is to be regarded as satisfactory if during the
test duration there are no visible signs of leakage.

6.2 Leakage through shaft packing, temporary gaskets, or internal test partitions
required for segmental hydrostatic pressure testing is acceptable.
7.0 Repairs
7.1 If the acceptance criteria stated in section 6.0 is not met, the cause of failure
shall be determined and the tested item disposed of or suitably corrected in
accordance with 08-03: Control of Nonconforming Product Procedure.
7.2 If the tested item is corrected, the hydrostatic pressure test shall be repeated
and the method of correction recorded on the QCR-003.
8.1 When a hydrostatic pressure test is completed, the results shall be recorded
using the QCR-003. And certified by the factory inspector with signature and
date of approval.
8.2 Each item subject to a test report will be marked uniquely for identification.
A hydrostatic pressure test report tag (part no. 532-0084-097) shall be riveted
onto the item in a visible and suitable area. The serialized report number
corresponding to the tag used shall be recorded on the QCR-003.
8.3 All QCR-003 test reports shall be kept on record for a minimum of 5 years.
8.5 In the case of a witnessed hydrostatic pressure test, the acceptance of the
tested item or its release for further manufacturing shall be confirmed by the
signature of the purchaser’s representative on the QCR-003.

WORK INSTRUCTION NUMBER: E1100
1 of 3
APPLICATION
1.0 This work instruction applies to hydraulic performance tests conducted in the
Collierville, TN facility.
REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
3.0 NFPA 20, Standard for the Installation of Centrifugal Fire Pumps 1996 Edition
4.0 UL 448 & ULC 448, Pumps for Fire-Protection Service Standard
5.0 FM Approval Standard Class Number 1311, 1312, 1319, Centrifugal Fire Pumps
INSTRUCTIONS
1.0 Test requirements shall be issued to the test lab by standard forms in Shop Tech.
2.0 All factory run tests shall use water at ambient temperature as the test liquid.
4.0 Test setup, test run, data acquisition, data reduction and test result presentations shall
be in accordance with Hydraulic Institute Standards or other applicable standards by
NFPA, UL, ULC, FM, etc. and shall be performed in accordance with customer
specifications. Special requirements may be issued by the Engineering Department.
When no special requirements are listed; Hydraulic Institute Standards will be followed
for all tests except fire pumps.
5.0 Test instruments shall be selected and maintained so that the required accuracy of the
measurements can be provided. The calibration interval shall follow what is
recommended in the applicable standards.
6.1 With a calibrated or non-calibrated test lab motor that matches the pump
speed and power. If a non-calibrated test lab motor is used, a calibrated
dynamometer must be used as well.
6.3 All drivers shall be operated in accordance with their individual instructions
or as directed either by engineering personnel or by manufacturer’s
representatives. The identification and other information of the driver shall
be recorded.
7.0 Before the test, the pump identification and configurations shall be recorded.
8.0 Data acquisition shall be conducted either manually by the personnel or automatically
by the data acquisition system. Data to be collected and the instruments used are
described as the following:
8.2 Brake horsepower shall be calculated from the dynamometer torque and rotating
speed, using proper dynamometer constant. For calibrated motors, the kW input
to the motor is converted to horsepower with motor calibration data.
8.3 Flow rate shall be measured with Venturi meter or flow meter. If Venturi meter is
used, lines to the read-out devices shall be filled with water and purged of air.
8.5 Suction pressure or lift shall be measured with manometer or compound gauge.
The line to the manometer or compound gauge shall be filled with either air or
water. Different data reduction methods shall be used for either air or water.
9.0 The number of test points shall be determined by the applicable standards or
requirements by either the customer or the Engineering Department. Standard
hydraulic performance test uses seven points as a minimum.
11.0 Test data shall be processed and saved by the data reduction programs installed in the
lab computers. Test curves shall be plotted. The test results shall be printed,
documented and distributed as required.
12.0 Test results shall be reviewed to verify that all required hydraulic requirements were
met. If all requirements are not met, engineering shall specify appropriate rework or
component replacement. The latest Hydraulic Institute Standards will be used as
acceptance criteria on all non-fire pump tests. The latest NFPA Standards will be used
as acceptance criteria on all fire pump test. The customer may approve any pump test
for their application. Customer approval will supersede any other acceptance criteria.
