4.0 Materials

4.1 Hydro flange plates

4.2 Hydro pipe cans

4.3 Plugs

4.4 Hydrostatic pressure test report tag

5.0 Test Procedure

5.1 Test preparation

5.1.1 Items to be tested shall be free from grease, oil, and other contaminants.

5.1.2 If required, items to be tested shall be assembled.

5.1.3 All openings shall be sealed by appropriate methods such as hydro

flange plates, hydro pipe cans, and plugs. Provisions shall be made to
vent all air at the high points on the items.

5.1.4 Items to be tested and the gage lines shall be vented and completely
filled with the test fluid. All air shall be vented from the items.

5.1.5 The test fluid shall be clean water at ambient temperature. A controlled
rust inhibitor shall be added to the test fluid when necessary.

5.2 Determine the test pressure

5.2.1 The test pressure shall be 1.5 times the maximum allowable working
pressure (MAWP) of the tested item unless otherwise negotiated between
the manufacturer and purchaser. The test shall not be less than 1.3 times
the MAWP.

5.2.2 For items used on UL and/or FM certified fire pumps, the test pressure
shall be a minimum of 2 times the tested item’s maximum design working
pressure. However, the test pressure shall not be less than 250 psi.

5.2.3 For chemical process pumps, the test pressure shall be 1.5 times the

5.3 Determine the test duration

5.3.1 The test pressure shall be maintained a sufficient amount of time for a
complete inspection of the tested items for leakage.

5.3.2 Per ANSI/HI 14.6-2016, the minimum test duration based on the tested
item’s pressure rating shall be as follows: 5 minutes for a MAWP
up to 145 psi, 10 minutes for a MAWP from 145 psi to 360 psi,
and 30 minutes for a MAWP above 360 psi.

5.3.3 For items used on UL and/or FM certified fire pumps, the test duration
shall be a minimum of 5 minutes.

5.3.4 For chemical process pumps, the test duration shall be a minimum of 10
minutes.

5.4 Test procedure

5.4.1 Prior to starting the test, verify the external walls of the items to be tested
are completely dry.

5.4.2 The hydrostatic pressure shall be increased in a controlled manner until

the test pressure is achieved. The test pressure shall be confirmed using
the appropriate calibrated pressure gage.

5.4.3 The test pressure determined in section 5.1 shall be maintained constant
for the test duration. The calibrated timer shall be used to monitor the test
duration.

5.4.4 Continuous observation shall be maintained for the test duration to detect
any leakage on the external walls.

5.4.5 At the end of the test duration, the hydrostatic pressure shall be
decreased in a controlled manner until the items return to atmospheric
pressure.

5.4.6 The items tested shall be completely drained of the test fluid and dried.

6.0 Acceptance Criteria

6.1 The integrity of the items tested is to be regarded as satisfactory if during the
test duration there are no visible signs of leakage.

Title: Hydrostatic Pressure Test Procedure Issue Date: 9/17/2018

6.2 Leakage through shaft packing, temporary gaskets, or internal test partitions
required for segmental hydrostatic pressure testing is acceptable.

7.0 Repairs

7.1 If the acceptance criteria stated in section 6.0 is not met, the cause of failure
shall be determined and the tested item disposed of or suitably corrected in
accordance with 08-03: Control of Nonconforming Product Procedure.

7.2 If the tested item is corrected, the hydrostatic pressure test shall be repeated
and the method of correction recorded on the QCR-003.

8.0 Test Report

8.1 When a hydrostatic pressure test is completed, the results shall be recorded
using the QCR-003. And certified by the factory inspector with signature and
date of approval.

8.2 Each item subject to a test report will be marked uniquely for identification.
A hydrostatic pressure test report tag (part no. 532-0084-097) shall be riveted
onto the item in a visible and suitable area. The serialized report number
corresponding to the tag used shall be recorded on the QCR-003.

8.3 All QCR-003 test reports shall be kept on record for a minimum of 5 years.

8.4 If required by the purchaser, the QCR-003 may be provided as a test

certificate which shall certify that the hydrostatic pressure test was performed in
accordance with this document, and that the tested item met the acceptance
criteria stated in section 6.0.

8.5 In the case of a witnessed hydrostatic pressure test, the acceptance of the
tested item or its release for further manufacturing shall be confirmed by the
signature of the purchaser’s representative on the QCR-003.
