Unit 8: Legends
La semana pasada hablamos sobre las Legends o Leyendas. Hoy vamos a seguir hablando de ellas. En
este caso, vamos a ver la legenda de The Foundation of Tenochtitlan (De Faundéishon of Tenochtitlán).

Aprende el siguiente Vocabulary (vocabiulari) o vocabulario.

received (risíivd) = recibieron began (bigán) = empezó started (startd) = empezar

leave (liiv) = idejar abandoned (ábandon) = abandonaron find (fáind) = encontrar

build (bíild) = construir lived (livd) = vivieron perched (pérchd) = posado

Ahora, para la actividad, vamos a ordenar en orden cronológico cuatro (4) eventos de The Foundation of
Tenochtitlan legend, los cuales estarán en una caja de respuestas. Además, se realizará un dibujo por
evento. Es decir, haremos cuatro (4) dibujos en total.

A continuación estará la leyenda. Hay una traducción de ésta al final de las actividades.

The Foundation of Tenochtitlan

One of the most beautiful Mexican legends talks about the people
of Aztlan. The people of Aztlan are called Aztecs. It talks about how
the Aztecs received orders from their god, Huitzilopochtli.
Huitzilopochtli told them to leave their home and search the
promised land. Huitzilopochtli told the Aztecs to build a temple
in his honor in the promised land.

It is believed that the Aztecs began to emigrate in the 6th century.

The Aztecs abandoned the place where they lived and started a
pilgrimage. Huiztilopochli told the Aztecs to find an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a snake.

Finally, the Aztecs found the promised land. The promised land was an island in the middle of a lake.
The Aztecs settled there expecting to build the most powerful empire in Mesoamerica, Tenochtitlan.

Ahora vamos a ver la Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl legend. Con esta legenda vamos a aprender unos
nuevos conceptos:

 Title (táitl) = Título. Por ejemplo, en la leyenda anterior, el title es The Foundation of
Tenochtitlan.
 Author (áuthor) = Autor. Se desconoce el autor de las leyendas, por lo que el author SIEMPRE
es unknown (onknoun) o desconocido.
 Setting (séting) = Es el lugar donde sucede la historia. Por ejemplo, en la legenda anterior, uno de
los settings podría ser Tenochtitlan.
 Character(s) (cáracter) = Los personajes de la legend. Por ejemplo, en la legend anterior son
los Aztecs y Huitzilopochtli.
 Introduction (introhdócshon) = Introducción. Donde comienza la historia. En la legend anterior
es, por ejemplo, donde Huitzilopochtli les dice a los Aztecas que busquen la promised land.
 Development (devélopment) = El desarrollo. Por ejemplo, en la legend anterior, el desarrollo es
cuando los Aztecas están buscando la promised land.
 Conclusion (conclúshon) = La conclusión. Es el como termina la historia. Por ejemplo, cuando los
Aztecas encontraron donde construir Tenochtitlan.

Considera el siguiente vocabulary antes de leer la legend:

went (went) = fue warrior(s) (wárior) = guerrero died (dáid) = murió

war (war) = guerra dead (ded) = muerto returned (retóhrnd) = regresó

marry (merhi) = casarse told (told) = dijo together (tuguéder) = juntos

Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl

Popocatepetl was a warrior of Tenochtitlan. Popocatepetl was in

love with the princess, Iztaccihuatl. Iztaccihuatl also loved
Popocatepetl. Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl wanted to marry each
other. Popocatepetl asked the emperor for permission to marry
Iztaccihuatl. The emperor told Popocatepetl to win the war to marry
Iztaccihuatl.

Popocateptl went to war. Popocatepetl won the war. One warrior

that did not like Popocatepetl sent a message to the emperor. The
message said that they had won the war but that Popocatepetl had died. The emperor told Iztaccihuatl
that Popocateptl had died. Iztaccihuatl got really sad and died.

Popocateptl returned. The emperor was surprised to see Popocatepetl. The sad emperor told
Popocatepetl that Iztaccihuatl had died. Popocatepetl was very sad. Popocatepetl took Iztaccihuatl to the
mountains. The gods transformed Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl into volcanoes so that they could be
together forever.

TRADUCCIONES DE LAS LEYENDAS

The Foundation of Tenochtitlan

Una de las leyendas más hermosas de México habla de la gente de Aztlán. A la gente de Aztlán se le llama
Azteca. Habla de cómo los Aztecas recibieron órdenes de su dios, Huitzilopochtli. Huitzilopochtli les dijo
que dejaran su hogar y fueran en busca de la tierra prometida. Huitzilopochtli les dijo a los Aztecas que
construyeran un tempo en su honor en la tierra prometida.

Se cree que los Aztecas comenzaron a emigrar en el siglo VI. Los Aztecas abandonaron el lugar donde
vivían y comenzaron un peregrinaje. Huitzilopochtli les dijo a los Aztecas que buscaran a un águila posada
sobre un cactus devorando una serpiente.

Finalmente, los Aztecas encontraron la tierra prometida. La tierra prometida era una isla en el medio de
un lago. Los Aztecas se instalaron ahí esperando construir el imperio más poderoso de toda Mesoamérica,
Tenochtitlán.

Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl

Popocatépetl era un guerrero de Tenochtitlán. Popocatépetl estaba enamorado de la princesa, Iztaccíhuatl.

Iztaccíhuatl también amaba a Popocatépetl. Popocatépetl e Iztaccíhuatl se querían casar. Popocatépetl le
pidió permiso al emperador para casarse con Iztaccíhuatl. El emperador le pidió a Popocatépetl que
ganara la guerra para que pudiera casarse con Iztaccíhuatl.

Popocatépetl fue a la guerra. Popocatépetl ganó la guerra. Un guerrero al que no le agradaba Popocatépetl
le mandó un mensaje al emperador. El mensaje decía que habían ganado la guerra, pero que Popocatépetl
había muerto. El emperador le dijo a Iztaccíhuatl que Popocatépetl había muerto. Iztaccíhuatl se puso muy
triste y murió.

Popocatépetl regresó. El emperador se sorprendió al ver a Popocatépetl. El emperador, triste, le dijo a

Popocatépetl que Iztaccíhuatl había muerto. Popocatépetl se puso muy triste. Popocatépetl se llevó a
Iztaccíhuatl a las montañas. Los dioses transformaron a Popocatépetl e Iztaccíhuatl en volcanes para que
pudieran estar juntos por siempre.
