7.1.1 Introduction
The design of a reactor is the basis of the equipment required to carry out the
transformation of raw material into the desired products in the majority of processes
developed in the chemical industry.
The design and operation of the chemical reactor are fundamental in any industrial
development process. There is a wide range of designs, depending on the reagents that feed
the reactor and the products to be obtained.
Plug flow reactors are used as laboratory equipment with the aim of obtaining a speed
equation which describes the operation of the reactor, as well as the development of the
chemical reaction that takes place in it.
The plow flow reactor (QRP/QRPC) is specially used to demonstrate flow patterns
And to study pulse and step changes for plug flow characterization and steady state
conversion in a packed reactor with axial dispersion.
To study this reactor, it is necessary to use a service Module and interface called QUSC or
QUS. This unit provides the reagents to the reactor under study.
They provide the necessary elements for the use of the diverse reactor modules.
They are constituted by:
The reagents supply circuit is constituted by a PTFE pipe of 6 mm. the reagents are introduced
into two Pyrex recipients of 1 litre each placed at the rear part. There are two peristaltic pumps
to propel the reagents.
The valves (1) of 6 mm are mounted at the peristaltic pumps outlet and they must be connected to
the reagent inlet of the reactor.
Ball valves with the mark (2) are water outlet and inlet valves. They have a tube of a 8 mm which
must be connected to the reactors water inlets and outlet. They are interchangeable.
The QUSC unit allows to control the reagents flow since both supply pumps are computer
controlled variable speed pumps.
The data acquisition and process control system is centralised in the electronic interface
connected to the different elements that constitute both the base module and the reactor
module.
The products collection circuit makes the products obtained from the reactions go directly to the
corresponding vessel.
This type of reactor consists of a column in which enter by its lower part and products leave by its
upper part, with a continuous variation of the reaction mixture composition inside.
Reactions are homogeneous and it is advisable to carry them out at a constant temperature. The
design of this small tubular flow reactor makes it possible to show the behavior of great scale
reactors.
PRACTICAL EXERCISES MANUAL
It consists of;
Plug reactor constituted by a glass column (1) of 1 l. packed with glass balls of 3 mm. of
diameter to guarantee an axial dispersion.
Premixer (2) located at the base of the column, so that reagents enter the column
completely mixed and, thus, the flux is better distributed.
Feeding system (3) provided with the reactor, it consists on a six ports injection valve and
Teflon pipe to connect to the reactor, this valve, together with a Teflon collector with ball
valve, allows either the feeding of reagents in a continuous way or the possibility to carry
out pulse and step changes to study the characterization of the flow pattern.
the reagents inlet (4) is done through two racors, one at each side of the premixer. In the
premixer, due to the location of the racors, the reagents choke, are mixed and enter the
reactor.
The product outlet (5) is done through the upper side of the reactor.
The monitoring of the reaction (6) is carried out using a conductivity cell with
conductimeter, which allows measuring the evolution of the reaction in real time.
The system has been designed to study the hydrolysis of the ethyl acetate in the presence of
sodium hydroxide. However, it can be used to study other reactions, such as the hydrolysis of the
acetic anhydride.
PRACTICAL EXERCISES MANUAL
7.4.3 Practical exercise 3. Obtention of the concentration change of sodium hydroxide during the
reaction and its conversion
7.4.3.1 Objectives
The main aim of this practical exercise is to observe the decrease in concentration of sodium
hydroxide as the ethyl acetate reacts to form sodium acetate, and be able to obtain at the same
time the conversion that this reagent is undergoing.
Different initial concentrations of sodium hydroxide and ethyl acetate are used in this trial.
Ten solutions must be prepared: five solutions of sodium hydroxide and other five
solutions of ethyl acetate. They will be used along the five test carried out in this practical
exercise. These initial reagents concentrations are: 0.05M; 0.04M; 0.03M; 0.02M; 0.01M.
Test 1: initial concentration of sodium hydroxide =0.05M and initial concentration of ethyl acetate
=0.05M
