1. INTRODUCCIN
Sin embargo, tambin es cierto que una percepcin mal entendida de esta
realidad ha provocado que algunos preparadores fsicos o tcnicos disearan
el entrenamiento de la fuerza mediante la aplicacin exclusiva de cargas
especficas, sin tener en cuenta el grado de especificidad con que los
entrenadores ya diseaban sus entrenamientos. Es por esta razn por la que
no slo se ha de analizar los requerimientos de fuerza que tiene un
determinado deporte de equipo sino tambin de qu manera los cubre el
cuerpo tcnico al cual, mientras no se demuestre lo contrario, estamos
subordinados. No olvidemos que cuanto ms especfica sea una carga de
entrenamiento ms agresividad supondr para el sistema msculo-esqueltico
y por lo tanto aumentar el riesgo de que los jugadores sufran una lesin.
Como ejemplo podemos citar estudios que han estimado que por cada 1000
horas de prctica de ftbol o balonmano se producen hasta 50 lesiones
(Rahnama, Reilly y Lees, 2002; Wedderkopp et al, 1997, 1999). Adems, la
incidencia de lesiones en competicin es 3 veces mayor que en los
entrenamientos en ftbol (Lewin, 1989, McGregor y Rae, 1995, Hawkins et al,
2001) y entre 13 y 20 veces en balonmano (Wedderkopp et al, 1997, 1999). Por
el contrario, la incidencia de lesiones por una carga inespecfica como puede

ser levantar pesas es muy baja en comparacin con muchas otras actividades
deportivas como puede observarse en la tabla 1 de Hamill (1994).

ciencia lo -poco o mucho- que nos puede aportar para mejorar el rendimiento
de nuestros jugadores pienso, humildemente, que estaremos muertos como
profesionales. Entiendo que nuestro deber profesional es intentar revisar y
analizar la mayor cantidad de informacin que podamos aunque tambin es
cierto que muy pocos formadores nos crearon este hbito imprescindible en
cualquier otra rama. Cajal, en 1898...!, ya adverta de este problema mediante
esta cita memorable:

AMPLIACIN DE INFORMACIN
Parece ser que Voigt y Klausen (1990) son los primeros en encontrar que
un entrenamiento intenso de fuerza mxima mejora la velocidad de un
movimiento sin sobrecarga pero slo si es combinado con un entrenamiento
especfico de dicho movimiento. Aparece un concepto empleado en la literatura
anglosajona, el entrenamiento combinado (combination training) que guarda

Son varios los estudios que han encontrado que un entrenamiento de fuerza
cuando es combinado con un entrenamiento especfico de lanzamientos
produce mayores aumentos en la velocidad de lanzamiento que si slo se
realiza un entrenamiento especfico del deporte (Hoff y Almasbakk, 1995;
Lachowetz et al, 1998; Gorostiaga et al, 1999). No obstante, se trataba de
jugadores con cierta experiencia pero no de lite.

Otra pregunta que muchos lectores se habrn realizado es: cul era el
momento ms idneo para realizar los ejercicios de transferencia? Hace
unos aos se realiz un estudio al respecto en el INEF de Barcelona y se
encontr que las mejoras fueron mayores en el grupo que realiz los ejercicios
de transferencia al final de la sesin de entrenamiento que en el que los realiz
despus de cada bloque de ejercicios (Lpez et al., 1996). Brown et al (1986)
tambin encontraron mejoras despus de realizar durante 12 semanas (34
sesiones) 3 series de 10 reps de drop jumps (desde 45 cm) al finalizar los
entrenamientos en baloncesto de high school (15 aos). Desafortunadamente
este estudio no investig la influencia de la situacin temporal de estos
ejercicios aunque s encontr que el grupo de entrenamiento mejor
significativamente ms su salto vertical que el grupo que slo entren
baloncesto.

Las fuerzas que tienen lugar en los cambios de direccin son de una
magnitud considerable. Por ejemplo, en jugadores NBA se han detectado
fuerzas de componente vertical de ms de 3 veces el peso corporal.

Por otro lado, un golpeo del baln a alta velocidad puede equivaler a una
fuerza aplicada de 2000N (unos 200 kgs) con una sola pierna (Luhtanen,
1994). Sin embargo, el estudio de Tsaousidis y Zatsiorsky (1996) encontr en
futbolistas amateur unas fuerzas de cmo mximo 1189 N; Tol et al (2002)
registraron 1025N.
Otro tipo de chut es el que golpea el baln con el interior (figura 21), donde
lgicamente las velocidades son menores. Se trata de un gesto empleado en
los pases a corta o media distancia o en los penaltis. En el Mundial de Francia
de 1998, 16 de 17 penaltis se realizaron con este gesto (Grant et al, 1998). El
jugador, en comparacin con el chut normal, orienta la pelvis, la pierna y el pie
ms hacia fuera introduciendo una velocidad de componente medial, sin
embargo la mayora de velocidad del pie es originada por la extensin de la
rodilla (Levanon y Dapena, 1998). Sin embargo, en un estudio posterior,
Nunome et al (2002) encontraron que el movimiento de rotacin externa de

En sujetos con que hayan sufrido lesiones graves de rodilla (rotura LCA) es
conveniente cambiar la tcnica de ejecucin de los saltos. En lugar de parar
bruscamente en la batida con la rodilla en hiperextensin y lejos de la
prolongacin de las caderas, el jugador debera frenar su aproximacin a la
batida mediante pequeos y rpidos pasos con las rodillas ligeramente
flexionadas. En las cadas (aterrizaje) despus de un salto, es importante

Por otro lado, Hewett et al (1996) encontr una reduccin significativa de las
fuerzas soportadas durante el aterrizaje posterior a un salto despus de realizar
un entrenamiento que inclua ejercicios pliomtricos. Estos resultados
adquieren una especial importancia despus de que Dufek y Bates (1991)
reportaran una relacin entre las lesiones de rodillas y el soportar altas fuerzas
de impacto en los aterrizajes.
Otro gesto que implica saltos es el golpeo de cabeza en el ftbol. Este gesto
ha adquirido mucha importancia en los ltimos aos debido al riesgo que
suponen para el jugador a nivel neurolgico (ver excelente revisin de
Kirkendall, 2001)

Parece que esta accin se da una media de 6-7 veces en los partidos (Reilly
y Thomas, 1976). Se ha sugerido que la mayora de cabeceos ocurren ante
velocidades de baln inferiores a los 65 km/h, lo que implicara un impacto de
10 ms de un fuerza entre 850 y 921 N y una aceleracin de 30 a 55G. Como
comparacin se puede citar el ftbol americano (impactos de 200-350 ms y
150-450G) o el boxeo (impactos de 14-18 ms a 6000N y 100G). Cuanto mayor
sea la fuerza y menor el tiempo de impacto mayor riesgo potencial de lesin.
Se ha estimado que la fuerza necesaria para que se produzca una concusin
es de 27 N/s mientras que las expuestas anteriormente como ejemplo para el
ftbol se encuentran entre 12,4 y 13,7 N/s (Kirkendall et al, 2001).

Estos resultados fueron constatados en los siguiente aos por otros autores
(Newton et al, 1999).
Baker (1996) propone tres grupos de ejercicios para la mejora del salto
agrupados segn su especificidad, definindolos as:

Este autor propone emplear estos ejercicios como continuum de forma que
puedan ser combinados o incluir una mayor proporcin de unos u otros. No
obstante, si se trabajan de manera aislada tambin llega a la conclusin de que
los ejercicios que implican trabajar en la zona de potencia mxima son los que
ms permiten mejorar el salto vertical.

Por otro lado, Hoffman (2003) encontr en ftbol americano que dos
sesiones lograban mantener (miembro superior) e incluso aumentar (miembro
inferior) la fuerza al terminar la temporada. Este es el primer estudio en
observar mejoras en jugadores con una previa experiencia en el entrenamiento
de fuerza. Lo habitual es que como mucho se mantengan los niveles (Groves y
Gayle, 1993; Baker, 2001). Sin embargo, en este estudio se encontr con que
sobre todo la intensidad del entrenamiento era la variable que ms influa en
los cambios de fuerza. Adems, lgicamente los jugadores con menos
experiencia en el trabajo de fuerza tienen un potencial de mejora superior,
como ya encontraron Hunter et al (1993) al analizar los cambios producidos
durante los 4 aos de universidad en 42 jugadores de baloncesto.

Ntese que dentro de una misma sesin se pueden trabajar los siete niveles
con el objeto de trabajar un contenido en el cual hayamos notado carencias
durante la semana anterior. As, en funcin del periodo de entrenamiento en el
que nos encontremos (preparatorio, competitivo o transitorio) incidiremos ms
sobre unos niveles u otros. Por lo tanto nos permite programas tanto a corto
como a largo plazo.
