La Regin del Maule es una de costumbres campesinas por excelencia. En este lugar se conservan monumentos histricos y casas coloniales que permiten al turista empaparse de parte importante de la historia de nuestro pas, as como tambin de ritos y tradiciones tpicas de una de las regiones ms rurales de Chile. Le invitamos a caminar por esta tierra rica en cultura, fiestas tpicas, juegos y competencias campesinas. Una tierra que tambin ha sido cuna de grandes poetas, escritores y polticos; todos protagonistas de casi dos siglos de vida republicana. Una regin llena de nostalgia, pero que empapada de historia tambin crece y se desarrolla da a da. As, sin dejar atrs su pasado, esta tierra se construye un nuevo y exitoso futuro. The Maule region is a quintessential peasant customs place. Its colors, flavors and traditions make it a unique place in which to enjoy and share beautiful manners and the best mix between country and city. In this place are preserved Historical Monuments and colonial houses that allow tourists to soak up part of the history of our country, as well as rituals and traditions typical of most rural regions of Chile.

We invite you to walk this land rich in culture, typical festivals, farm games and competitions. A land that has also been the cradle of great poets, writers and politicians, all players in nearly two centuries of republican life. A region full of nostalgia, but also steeped in history that grows and develops day by day. Thus, without leaving behind its past, this land has built a new and successful future. La Regin del Maule cuenta con una superficie de 30.296 km2 que se extienden entre los 34o 41 y 36o 33 de latitud sur y los 70o 20 de longitud oeste al Ocano Pacfico. Se ubica en la zona central de Chile, equidistante de los tres mayores centros de produccin y consumo nacional: la capital de Chile, Santiago (a 252 km.), Valparaso (a 372 km.) y Concepcin (a 261 km.). La regin est dividida polticamente en cuatro provincias que son Curic, Talca, Linares y Cauquenes y alberga a 908.097 habitantes. Su capital regional es la ciudad de Talca, principal ncleo urbano y de servicios.

The Maule Region has an area of 30,296 square kilometers, which lies between 340 41' and 360 33' south latitude and 700 20' west to the Pacific Ocean. It is located in central Chile, equidistant from the three major centers of production and domestic consumption: the capital of Chile, Santiago (252 kilometers), Valparaiso (372 km) and Concepcion (261 km). The region is divided politically into four provinces and is home to 908,097 inhabitants. Its capital is the city of Talca, the main town and service nucleus.

Como toda la zona central de Chile, Maule se caracteriza por su relieve de cinco marcadas formas. De oeste a este: planicies litorales, cordillera de la Costa, depresin intermedia, precordillera y la Cordillera de Los Andes. Esta ltima se caracteriza por una fuerte actividad volcnica -Volcn Peteroa (3603 mt.), Azufre (4100 mt.), Descabezado Grande (3830 mt.), Descabezado Chico y Quizapu- cuya actividad y la accin glaciar han creado prstinas e ignotas lagunas cordilleranas como la de Teno, a los pies del volcn Planchn (4090 mt.), la del Maule, Invernada y Dial. El valle longitudinal presenta un relieve plano slo interrumpido por los numerosos ros que lo atraviesan de este a oeste. Hacia la parte central y sur de la regin aparece, sin embargo, un relieve precordillerano de alturas entre 400 y 1000 mt. sobre el nivel del mar. La cordillera de la Costa se presenta baja con un relieve suave que origina cuencas y valles. Las principales alturas no sobrepasan los 900 mt., las planicies litorales tienen un amplio desarrollo con terrazas que alcanzan los 200 mt. con un ancho aproximado de 5 km. e interrumpida por ros que desembocan en el mar. Las playas se presentan extensas como es el caso de Constitucin. La presencia de dunas se da especialmente en las zonas de Put, Chanco y Curanipe.

This region is characterized by a marked relief of five forms. From west to east: coastal plains, Coastal Mountain Range, central depression, foothills and the Andes Mountains Range. The latter is characterized by the presence of volcanoes, which protrude into Peteroa Volcano (3,603 meters), Azufre Volcano (4,100 meters), Descabezado Grande (3,830 meters), Descabezado Chico and Quizapu - which activity and glacial action has created pristine and unknown Andean lagoons, as the Teno, located at the foot of Planchn Volcano (4,090 meters), Invernada and Dial Lagoons. The longitudinal valley has a flat topography interrupted only by the many rivers that cross it. However, towards the center and south of the region there is a preAndean relief between 400 and 1000 meters in height. The Coastal Range appears low, which causes mild relief basins and valleys. The main heights do not exceed 900 meters. Moreover, the coastal plains are well developed, with terraces that reach 200 meters and a width of about five kilometers, but interrupted by rivers flowing into the sea. The beaches in general are broad and gray sanded. The presence of dunes is appreciated especially in areas of Putu, Chanco and Curanipe.

En la zona de los valles longitudinales se presenta un clima templado mediterrneo con marcadas estaciones del ao: seca y calurosa en verano, lluviosa y ligeramente fra en otoo, fra y lluviosa en invierno y seca y templada en primevara. En la precordillera -hasta los 2000 mt.-, hay un ligero cambio a un clima templado mediterrneo de altura en que descienden ligeramente las temperaturas y aumentan las precipitaciones. En la costa predomina el clima templado mediterrneo costero, con temperaturas moderadas todo el ao.

The area of longitudinal valleys present a mild Mediterranean climate, with pronounced seasons: dry and hot in summer, rainy and slightly cold in autumn, cold and rainy in winter and dry and warm in spring.

In the foothills up to 2,000 meters high, there is a slight change to a warm Mediterranean climate in height, in which temperatures drop slightly and increase rainfall. On the coast the climate is mild Mediterranean coastline, with moderate temperatures throughout the year.

Esta regin es sin duda alguna la zona del pas en donde se produce la mayor cantidad de litros de vino. This region is undoubtedly the area of the country producing the greatest number of liters of wine. Ubicada a poco ms de 200 kilmetros al sur de Santiago- ofrece un viaje a uno de los lugares con mayor tradicin viatera en Chile. Tierras que poseen cualidades climticas excepcionales y que llevan casi medio milenio imprimiendo sus caractersticas nicas e irrepetibles a las uvas que all se cultivan, siendo la ms reconocida de estas la cepa Cabernet Sauvignon. Located just over 200 kilometers south of Santiago, it offers a trip to one of the places with the highest traditional winemaking in Chile. This is a route with agricultural tradition, which has a history for over 200 years and that between hills and valleys of the coast mountain range, still hides the rural life and the attachment to the land. That is the Heritage Route Nirivilo - Pichamn Valley. Where is it located?: It is located in the Region of Maule, inserted between the provinces of Talca and Linares, divided by the river that gives name to the region. How to get there? From the Pan American highway, on Route CH-5, next to San Javier, you can take Route L-30-M that joins this commune with Constitucin, and less than 40 km in the direction towards the coast you will get to the beginning of this adventure that will show another face of central Chile. It is difficult to list all the reasons to visit this route, but all the above happens here, near the detour to Nirivilo and even a little beyond the Maule River. The tour of this route considers two sections that are located along the inter-mountains valleys of the coast mountain range. Desde el desvo a Nirivilo -donde comienza la ruta-, pasando por el cruce de Barrancas y siguiendo por el brazo derecho hasta el Maule, con una longitud de 21,046 Km., se encuentra el Tramo N 1 Nirivilo Gonzlez Bastas, que termina en esta estacin del ramal Talca - Constitucin, al otro lado del ro. Asimismo, desde la bifurcacin en Barrancas, por el brazo izquierdo y hasta llegar a la ribera sur del Maule, se encuentra el Tramo N 2 Barrancas Valle de Pichamn, de 10,069 Km. de longitud. El paisaje que usted observar, corresponde a un valle tpico de la cordillera de la costa de Chile central, emplazado sobre lo que se ha denominado secano costero o de rulo, por sus caractersticas climticas, principalmente por el exclusivo aporte de humedad a sus suelos, a travs de la lluvia. El recorrido es una mezcla entre el verde de la vegetacin y el sustrato de los caminos, que bsicamente son naturales o de tierra, lo cual le imprime un clsico escenario de aventura a un soleado transitar que va dejando una estela de polvo entre los cerros y las vias de este valle. En el aspecto humano y cultural, el paisaje desde la carretera panamericana, se torna de color y aroma campesino, sobre todo por los cultivos, por las casas de adobe con techos de teja artesanal, por el olor a horno de barro y por la sonrisa de sus pobladores, que sern sus acompaantes en este recorrido con tradicin huasa. Camino a Constitucin, antes del Puente Loncomilla, se sugiere una visita al Museo del Vino y Bodega Urrutia, en el kilmetro uno. En este lugar es posible observar y conocer antiguos implementos utilizados en la elaboracin de vinos, adems de comprar productos locales y mermeladas caseras.

AROMAS, SABORES Y COLORES DEL MAULE En la Regin del Maule existe una variada y rica gastronoma, la que est presente y se reparte por las diferentes comunas, ciudades y localidades de esta zona. De esta forma, en un pausado recorrido por pequeos mercados, ferias libres y caletas de pescadores, el turista puede encontrar la esencia de nuestra cultura culinaria, adems de productos frescos y elaborados tpicos de la regin, cuyas recetas de preparacin han ido pasando de generacin en generacin, lo que en s ya es un trozo de patrimonio maulino. Existes diversos platos elaborados con chuchoca (maz seco y triturado). Este ingrediente es bastante utilizado para acompaar platos como cazuelas de ave, cerdo, pava (se recomienda probar la que se ofrece en el Mercado de Cauquenes) o vacuno, adems de su uso en diferentes guisos o incluso como acompaamiento de papas. Tambin destaca el tpico mote de trigo, ideal para acompaar huesillos (descarozado de durazno hervido y acaramelado con azcar), preparacin muy apetecida y refrescante durante la poca estival. El mote de maz tambin es altamente valorado en la cocina maulina, fundamentalmente para acompaar porotos o bien guisarlo para servirlo como ensalada. En cuanto a las bebidas calientes, caractersticos son el caf de trigo y el mate de hierbas, ambos muy usados en los fros das invernales de la zona. Por otra parte, la harina tostada de trigo es utilizada en preparada en muchos casos con agua fra y azcar, o con leche en invierno, a lo que se denomina ulpo. Es tpico tambin espolvorear esta harina sobre trozos de sanda o perfumados melones, o incluso por encima de los famosos helados de nieve, los que son propios de la localidad de Vilches Altos. En diversas localidades rurales de la Regin del Maule encontramos venta de pan amasado, tortillas de rescoldo o quesos frescos; los cuales tambin estn presentes en las ferias libres de algunas ciudades como Cauquenes y Constitucin. El merkn es la mezcla perfecta de aj cacho de cabra (rojo intenso y muy picante), y semilla de cilantro. Todo esto, tostado y ahumado lentamente en brasas de espino. En este mismo mbito, la localidad de Villa Prat destaca por su gran produccin de ajes y en verano es un placer a la vista ver los techos de las casas rojos donde se secan los ajes al sol. Famosos son los quesos y mantequilla del Fundo de Lora, cercano a Licantn. Tambin estn los quesos de Chanco, elaborados con leche de vaca, oveja o cabra; y que le han entregado un reconocimiento nacional a esta comuna. Lo mismo con los quesos frescos y helados de Loncomilla.

Entre los productos frescos presentes en la Regin del Maule -dependiendo de la poca del aoencontramos chaguales, caiguas y digees o ligees. Estos ltimos, usados principalmente en ensaladas o con un tipo de pebre. En la poca estival, el choclo es el pilar de varios platos como las humitas, el pastel en plato de greda o simplemente cocidos y servidos con mantequilla. Los porotos granados son parte tambin de la gastronoma chilena y regional, acompaados con zapallo en trozo o molido y perfumados con albahaca. A veces se les agrega color, que es una mezcla de pimiento dulce seco molido, aj cacho de cabra y manteca de cerdo; todos estos ingredientes, fusionados al calor del fuego. Para acompaar cualquier comida infaltable es el chancho en piedra, mezcla de tomates, cebolla, ajo y aj; molido en piedra y condimentado con sal y aceite. Las frutas y verduras se dan en esta regin en abundancia y variedad, sobre todo en primavera y verano. En este mbito destacan frutillas y papayas, producidas principalmente en la zona de Chanco, Pelluhue, Curanipe y Lipimvida. Estas son parte importante de nuestra repostera, ya sea en forma de mermelada, jarabe o bien cocidas y hechas conservas. Por otra parte, en la comuna de Romeral existe una importante produccin de guindas. En tanto, en la Provincia de Curic abunda la produccin de manzanas, peras y kiwis. A esto se suma una importante produccin de uva de mesas, tanto en el Valle Central como el Secano Costero. No se pueden dejar de mencionar las conocidas mermeladas producidas por las monjas de Quilvo (camino a Los Quees) y Carmelitas (camino TalcaSan Clemente), elaboradas con ancestrales secretos y gran minusiocidad. Adems de la produccin de frambuesas en Yerbas Buenas y Colbn; los berries en la zona de Curic, Lontu y Molina; la miel de Vilches y Chanco; adems de los porotos, lentejas y chcharos de la comuna de Curepto. Famosas son las tortas de manjar y alcayota, elaboradas desde hace muchos aos en la Fbrica Montero, en la ciudad de Curic, y las de hojuelas rellenas con miel o manjar de la Huerta de Mataquito. Las ranas maulinas -que algn da se dieron en abundancia- estn casi extinguidas en la zona. Sin embargo, an es posible encontrarlas en algn restaurante tipo picada, rebosadas, fritas y servidas con un pebre de aj y tomates. En la regin existen numerosas de estas picadas para degustar gastronoma, sobresaliendo por tradicin y fama el famoso restaurante Colo Colo, en Romeral, con sus plateadas al jugo y las Viejas Cochinas, en Talca, con su chancho en piedra con pan amasado o sopaipillas, el pollo mariscal y el exquisito ponche con vino blanco o tinto. los famosos asados de chivo o cordero que con esmero preparan los arrieros en las zonas cordilleranas a los turistas que les acompaan por inimaginables travesas Mencin aparte merece la visita a las caletas de toda nuestra costa, con variados establecimientos de alimentacin y fresqusimos pescados como congrio, corvina, lenguado, mero y sierra; presentados gastronmicamente de diversas formas y sabores. Famoso es el congrio frito (medallones adobados slo con limn, ajo y organo; envueltos en un crujiente batido), lo que permite tener una carne jugosa, firme y -como dijo el poeta Pablo Neruda en uno de sus poemas- con los jugos del ocano. En cuanto a la sierra, esta es muy apetecida ahumada, acompaada de frescas ensaladas. La paila marina, el Mariscal caliente o frio pero siempre cocido. Entre los mariscos que abundan en la costa, las jaibas y los locos se llevan los honores con recetas tan simples y perfectas como el chupe (trocitos blandsimos mezclados con crema de leche, pan blanco, aceitunas y aj de color; servido en su librillo de greda dorado), pastel de jaiba imperdible al paladar ms exigente y el huepo molusco que es irresistible a los paladares ms exigentes se come en entradas, al jugo o en empanadas En la desembocadura de los ros encontramos pescados de agua dulce como los pejerreyes plateados, los cuales se acostumbran de preparar fritos enteros principalmente en el sector de la Pesca y acompaados de la tpica ensalada chilena (tomate con cebolla). La Lisa a la Teja es famosa en el sector de Rancho Astillero, la ltima estacin del ramal TalcaConstitucin. Esta se prepara ponindola limpia entre dos tejas chilenas, al carbn y apenas adobada con cebolla, ajo, limn, tomate y aceite de oliva. Mientras se prepara esta lisa es posible degustar un rico ponche o borgoa con frutas frescas como frutilla, chirimoya o papayas y endulzado a gusto; con hielo picado ms vino blanco o tinto. Esta preparacin es un aperitivo infaltable en los calurosos das veraniegos. Adems, en algunos sectores rurales se prepara el ponche de culn, preparacin que mezcla el vino con hojas de este arbusto nativo. Los camarones de tierra se extraen y venden en la poca invernal, especialmente despus de una lluvia y se comen cocidos. Es posible comprarlos en la Ruta 5 Sur, donde se instalan improvisados vendedores con sus tradicionales cuelgas. Otros elementos que complementan la gastronoma regional son la carne y huevos de avestruz; las ostras de cultivo del sector de Boyeruca; las avellanas y pecanas europeas en las zonas de San Rafael y Molina; los hongos de Empedrado y los shitakes de Curepto o e Maule; el aceite de oliva producido en Sagrada Familia y en Quepu (en la comuna de Pencahue) y los tomates de Coln. Tambin est las cervezas artesanales de Curic 1758 y Berner del sector de Los Niches. Estas bebidas en la actualidad se encuentran disponibles tambin en prestigiosos bares y discotecas del pas. Otros brebajes destacados de la zona son los licores artesanales de Curic y Villa Alegre. En un tono ms urbano, los completos que se venden desde hace dcadas en los carritos de la ciudad de Talca tambin han pasado a ser parte de la gastronoma regional. Lo mismo ha sucedido con las las churrascas (especie de pan cocido a las brasas, sobre parrillas) y los wambi en Talca, una masa similar a una sopaipilla pero muy grande, la que se consume en forma de sndwich con palta, tomate, queso u otros ingredientes. Finalmente no podemos dejar de mencionar la elaboracin y venta de sabrosas longanizas y otros productos extrados del cerdo.
