The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom for all Americans. It is one of the most recognized monuments in the United States. It is more than 300 feet tall and receives millions of visitors every year. Inside the statue, there are stairs that take people all the way to the top where there is an observation deck with many windows. The view from there is spectacular. It is one place where people can truly appreciate how breathtaking the great city of New York really is. The Statue of Liberty is also called Lady Liberty. She was a gift from the people of France to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, a famous French artist, was asked to design a statue to recognize the friendship between the two countries. He placed a crown with seven rays on Lady Libertys head to represent the seven seas and continents. He also put broken chains at her feet to symbolize freedom. Such a huge project was a great challenge. Bartholdi asked Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, to help him resolve engineering problems. When the statue arrived at New York Harbor, it was in 350 gigantic pieces. It took four months to assemble

My youngest cousin Rosi had never been to a fair. She was really excited when my family asked her to come with us. When we got to the fair, we had to decide what to do and see. We saw many people playing games. In one of the games, the player had to toss large metal rings over empty bottles. If three rings landed around any of the bottles, the player got a prize. We saw a man win a huge stuffed toy animal. There were lots of fun rides too. Rosi wanted to ride the enormous Ferris wheel. It reached way up into the sky. We had to stand in line for several minutes until it was our turn. Then, we got into a seat and put on the safety straps. Rosi held my hand tightly as the ride started. We slowly moved up and around in a big circle. From the very top, we could see the bright, colorful lights of the fair. We were lucky that Rosi chose the Ferris wheel. I wanted to ride the merry-go-round next. It had beautiful bright lights. We watched in amazement as the horses went up and down. When the ride stopped, Rosi and I got on and quickly chose a horse. Mine was yellow. Rosi jumped onto a white horse. We smiled and waved at people as the ride went round and round. By then we were very hungry. We found the food stands. We ate some hot dogs. Then we had some french fries. Rosi and I were both glad we had already been on the rides first. We were almost too full to move!
