SUMMARY
Twelve diabetic dogs and eight dogs with insulinoma of different ages, sex and breeds were
included in the study. Blood glucose, fructosamine and glycated hemoglobin concentrations were
evaluated in all dogs. Serum fructosamine (458,57 µmol/l) and glycated hemoglobin (5.40%) were
significantly higher in diabetic dogs than the reference interval previously evaluated in healthy dogs.
On the contrary, dogs with insulinoma had lower fructosamine (201,13 µmol/l) and glycated
hemoglobin (0.82%) concentrations. These results suggest that fructosamine and glycated
hemoglobin may be considered for use in screening tests for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and
insulinoma in dogs.
