The Naming System in Spanish Speaking Countries

In Spanish speaking countries, each person carries two surnames one paternal and one maternal. The
paternal surname (apellido paterno) is written first, followed by the maternal surname (apellido materno). Apart
from that, a composite given name (nombre) comprises of two single names, for example, Jos Miguel is not
considered two names, but just one.
So, if Francisco Prez Coln marries Carmen Salinas Estrada and they have a son, he would be named
Alejandro Prez Salinas, where Prez is the paternal surname and Salinas the maternal surname.
