ÍNDICE
INTRODUCCIÓN
En El Salvador, a fines del siglo XIX (1870-1900), el cambio económico más
importante fue el desarrollo de nuevas actividades productivas en el área rural,
tales como la minería y el cultivo de café.
Los países de Centroamérica pudieron ampliar su producción de café porque los
habitantes de los países industrializados de Europa y Norteamérica empezaron a
consumirlo en mayores cantidades, convirtiendo el grano, en el siglo XIX, en un
producto de consumo popular. La alta demanda del café significó, asimismo, que
el precio que se pagaba por el grano en los principales mercados de Norteamérica
y Europa llegara a tales niveles que muchos países decidieron integrarse al
mercado mundial del café.
ANTECEDENTES
 El café se introdujo en El Salvador entre 1779 y 1796.
 La República federal de Centroamérica termino
disolviéndose y en 1840 El Salvador se declaró Estado
independiente
 En 1855 el café se convirtió en un negocio rentable para la
elite salvadoreña
 En 1879 el valor de las exportaciones del café supero a las
del añil
 La demanda de añil se redujera drásticamente como
producto de exportación.
 El cultivo de café cambio la forma de propiedad de la
tierra, porque el cultivo del café necesita terrenos grandes y
apropiados.
CAMBIOS EN LA INFRAESTRUCTURA
En la medida en que se producía más café se necesitaba más infraestructura:

con lo que el poder adquisitivo de la
población bajó considerablemente.
El Gobierno despidió a muchos empleados públicos y a los que mantuvieron el empleo se les
rebajó el salario, los terratenientes hicieron lo mismo con las y los jornaleros.
