Disparates Familiar Sillies

Cuando le digo a alguien que trabajo en
Highlights, se le ilumina la cara y suele decir:
“¡Recuerdo esa revista del consultorio del
médico!”.
En la sección “¡Qué disparate!” de este mes
(páginas 18 y 19), se ve el consultorio de un
dentista. Dedique unos minutos a comentar
con su niño el dibujo y lo que recuerda de las
visitas al dentista. ¿Qué le resulta conocido o
desconocido? ¿Qué disparates ve? Si su niño
ve el hipopótamo que lleva un muñeco en los
brazos, pregúntele cómo cree que se siente el
hipopótamo. Eso puede ayudarlo a hablar de
cómo se siente él cuando va al dentista.
¡Diviértanse buscando los disparates en la
revista de este mes!

In this month’s “That’s Silly!” (pages 18
to 19), we show a dentist’s office. Take a few
minutes to talk with your child about the
picture and his or her experiences going to
the dentist. What’s familiar? What’s not?
What’s silly? When your child finds the hippo
holding the stuffed animal, discuss what that
hippo might be feeling. This might lead to
a conversation about how your child feels
visiting the dentist.
Have fun looking at this month’s sillies!

canta su melodía.
Coquí toda la noche,

La rana coquí es nativa de Puerto Rico. Se llama

coquí porque por la noche canta “coquí, coquí” .

¡Salta la rayuela!

Marco elige dos colores de su caja de tizas. Con la tiza

azul, dibuja los cuadrados de la rayuela. Con la tiza roja,
escribe un número en cada cuadrado.
Cuenta: —Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho.
Después busca una piedra pequeña. No encuentra
ninguna, pero ve una rama pequeña.

 Marco lanza la rama al primer cuadrado.
Brinca por encima, da saltos hasta el 8 y después
da saltos de vuelta hasta el 1.
Anna y su perro, Rico, se detienen a ver cómo
juega Marco. Ana pregunta: —¿Puedo jugar?
—Sí —dice Marco.

 Pero cuando Anna
lanza la rama, Rico la
agarra y sale corriendo.
—¡Rico, tú no
puedes jugar! —dice
Anna. Le pide que le
devuelva la rama y
Rico la suelta.

Anna y Marco siguen jugando por turnos mientras

Rico los mira. Por fin, Marco lanza la rama al último
número. Salta los cuadrados, recoge la rama y vuelve
dando saltos al 1.
Anna aplaude y dice: —¡Has ganado!

 —Y ahora ganas tú, Rico —dice Marco y
le lanza la rama a Rico para que la recoja.

Hace mucho tiempo, el verano duraba todo el año. El sol

brillaba de la mañana a la noche.
—¡Hace demasiado calor! —dijo Ratón.
—Es verdad —dijo Búho—, ¿pero qué podemos hacer?
Zorro dijo: —Debemos visitar a Osa Celestial. Ella nos ayudará.
Así fue que los animales cruzaron el desierto
hacia la Senda de Estrellas.

 Cuando llegaron al refugio de Osa Celestial, ella los saludó
amablemente.
—¿Por qué han venido desde tan lejos? —les preguntó.
Zorro contestó: —Donde vivimos hace demasiado calor.
—Yo puedo ayudarlos —dijo Osa Celestial. Les dio tres bolsas
y dijo—: No las abran hasta que estén de vuelta en la Tierra.

 Los animales volvieron por la Senda de Estrellas.

 Cuando llegaron a la Tierra, Zorro abrió una bolsa. Salió
el viento. Búho abrió otra bolsa. Salió la lluvia. Ratón abrió
la última bolsa. Salió la nieve.
Desde ese día, el verano tiene fin y hay otras estaciones.

Chirps the coqui frog
Ko-kee, ko-kee
From dusk till dawn
Ko-kee, ko-kee
Singing all night long.

The coqui frog is native to Puerto Rico. It is called

the coqui frog because at night it sings “ko-kee.”

Hop for Hopscotch!

Marco picks two colors from his chalk box.

With the blue chalk, he makes hopscotch
squares. With the red chalk, he draws numbers in
each square.
He counts, “One, two, three, four, five, six,
seven, eight.”
Next, he looks for a small stone. He can’t find
one, but he does see a small stick.

 Marco tosses the stick onto the first square.
He jumps over it and hops all the way to
8 and back to 1.
Anna and her dog, Rico, stop to watch Marco
play. She asks, “Can I play?”
Marco says, “Yes.”

 But when Anna
tosses the stick,
Rico grabs it and
runs away.
Anna says, “Rico,
you can’t play!”
She holds out her
hand and Rico
drops the stick.

Anna and Marco keep taking turns while Rico

watches. Finally, Marco tosses the stick to the
last number. He hops on the squares, picks up
the stick, and hops back to 1.
Anna claps her hands and says, “You win!”

tossing the stick for Rico to fetch.

Long ago, summer lasted all year. The sun shone brightly
from morning until night.
“It’s too hot!” said Mouse.
“You’re right,” said Owl. “But what can we do?”
Fox said, “We must travel to Sky Bear. She will help us.”
So the animals crossed the desert to the Pathway of Stars.

 When they reached Sky Bear’s lodge, she greeted them kindly.
“Why have you come such a long way?” she asked.
Fox replied, “It’s too hot where we live.”
“I can help,” said Sky Bear. She gave them three bags and said,
“Do not open these until you return to Earth.”

 The animals traveled back down the
Pathway of Stars.

 When they reached Earth, Fox opened one bag.
Out came the wind. Owl opened another bag. Out
came the rain. Mouse opened the last bag. Out came
the snow.
And from that day, the seasons change, and
there is an end to summer.
