3. SEMANA 1 (UNIDAD 0) – 05 AL 10 DE FEBRERO
WH questions
3.1. VERB TO BE
estoy esperando».
40
41
“I am in class” – “Yo estoy en clase”
“I am a teacher” – “Yo soy un profesor”.
Juan y Carmen son amigos. They are friends.
Emanuel es mi hermano. He is my brother.
EL VERBO TO BE, nos sirve para construir expresiones en PRESENTE
SIMPLE.

3. No tienen gerundio
4. No tienen participio
175
Por ejemplo: My keys must be in the car; (Mis llaves seguramente están en el auto.)

EXAMPLES:
Can
Ejemplos:
Could
She could not go to the market with us = Ella no pudo ir al mercado nos nosotras
Could you open the door, please? = ¿Podrías abrirme la puerta, por favor?
May
Ejemplos:
177
She may pass the test = Ella podría aprobar el examen
Might
peticiones y ofrecimientos.
My sister might come home for my birthday = Mi hermana tal vez pueda venir a casa
para mi cumpleaños
You might not arrive on time = Puede ser que no llegues a tiempo.
Will
Ejemplo:
I won’t go with you because I have a lot of work = No iré contigo porque tengo mucho
trabajo
Would
I would like a cup of tea, please = Me gustaría una taza de té, por favor
He would visit his sister every weekend = Visitaba a su hermana cada fin.
Must
refiera a necesidades o compromisos.
Shall
mismo que will. Ejemplos:
178
Shall we go to the theatre tomorrow? = ¿Vamos al teatro mañana?
Should
Ejemplos:
Ought to
repasar algunos ejemplos:

If your headache doesn’t get better in a couple of days, you should go to the
If you want to improve your language skills, you should try to read something in
English every day (Si quieres mejorar tu nivel, deberías tratar de leer algo en inglés
Education should be free for everyone (La educación debería ser gratuita para
todos).
Women shouldn’t be paid less than men for doing the same work (Las mujeres no
‘Where’s Joe?’
The party on Saturday should be good - everyone is going (La fiesta del sábado
I should have told her I loved her (Debería haberle dicho que la quería [pero no se lo
dije, y ahora estoy triste por ello]).
Clara shouldn’t have sent that e-mail (Clara no debería haber enviado ese correo
modales:
1. Los verbos modales nunca van seguidos por “to”, sino por un infinitivo sin “to”:
183
You shouldn’t listen to what James says - he’s often wrong (Más vale que no
The children definitely should not be allowed in the study (Definitivamente, los niños
no deberían entrar en el despacho).
Should I turn off the lights? (¿Debería apagar las luces? [es decir, ¿es buena idea?,
¿quieres que lo haga?]).
Shouldn’t you have finished by now? (¿No tendrías que haber terminado ya?
[vamos, que yo creo que deberías haber terminado]).
+ have + participio pasado”:
Paolo shouldn’t have eaten the last cake - it was for Jordi (Paolo no debería haberse
comido el último pastel: era para Jordi).
Excepciones y variantes
If you want to cancel the holiday, please let us know within 7 days (Si quiere cancelar
el viaje, comuníquenoslo antes de 7 días).
If you should want to cancel the holiday, please inform us within 7 days (Si deseara
Should you want to cancel the holiday, please inform us within 7 days (En caso de
de “should”.
If you have had the flu for more than a week, you should go to the doctor (Si has
If you have had the flu for more than a week, you must go to the doctor (Si has
contraerse: “I’d better”, “you’d better”, “he’d better”, etc.
“ought to”:
I should leave now, before it starts snowing (Tendría que irme ya, antes de que
empiece a nevar).
I’d better leave now, before it starts snowing (Será mejor que me vaya ya / Mejor me
I ought to leave now, before it starts snowing (Debería irme ya, antes de que
empiece a nevar)
“should”.
regalo es “Thank you, you shouldn’t have!”
problema”…).
2. Jon shouldn’t have said that to his boss - now he will have to find a new job.
5. Shouldn’t you be in bed now? It’s past midnight!
