COVID-19: long-term effects
Most people who catch coronavirus (COVID-19) recover within a few weeks. But some
people, even those who become slightly ill, may continue to show symptoms for a long
time after their initial recovery. These enduring health problems are sometimes called
post-COVID-19 syndrome.
What is post-COVID-19 syndrome and how many people suffer from it?
According to research, between 1 and 12 months after catching COVID-19, one in five
people between 18 and 64 years old shows at least one medical condition that may have
been caused by COVID-19. Moreover, 25% of people over 65 manifests at least one
medical condition that may have been caused by COVID-19.
What are the post-COVID-19 syndrome symptoms and signs?
The most common are:
- Exhaustion
- Symptoms that get worse after physical or mental effort
- Fever
- Pulmonary manifestations, such as breathing difficulties and dry cough
Unusual symptoms and signs may be:
- Cardiac manifestations
- Gastrointestinal manifestations
- Vascular manifestations such as blood clots or pulmonary embolism (blockage of the
blood vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs for its
oxygenation)
- Menstrual cycle changes
- Joint or muscle pain
- Neurological manifestations
Why does COVID-19 cause ongoing health problems?
This disease can have long-term effects on anyone who contracts it, including those who
presented no symptoms or who underwent mild COVID-19. However, people who have
had severe COVID-19 are more likely to manifest damage in their heart, kidneys, skin,
and brain. This serious illness may also precede the appearance of inflammation and
immune system problems. It is unknown how long these effects could last, it could take
months or years. And as stated before, the effects could also lead to the development of
new medical conditions, such as diabetes or any heart or nervous system disease.
