Steamboat
Before trains, cars, trucks, and airplanes existed, rivers were used for travel.
They carried people or goods to another places. River travel was often slow
because speed of travel depended on the river or the manpower.
It enabled the British to travel up and down the river, to reach the depths of
Africa and sail the seas of Asia and the Pacific at full speed. Their relative
speed and ability to travel against the current reduced time and expense.
These boats made user of the steam engine invented by Thomas Newcomen
in the early 18th century and later improved by James Watt of Scotland.

Thomas Newcomen, (baptized February 28, 1664, Dartmouth, Devon,

England—died August 5, 1729, London), was
a british engineer and inventor of the atmospheric steam engine,
a precursor of James Watt’s engine.

From 1810 to 1840 steamships flooded the entire British Empire

• 1811, when Henry Bell's Comet crossed Scotland's River Clyde
• 1815, when 10 steamboats operated on the rivers of the UK
• 1820, when 100 steamboats crossed the seas of the UK
• 1823, when the tug Diana was built at the Calcutta shipyard
• 1824, when the East India Company militarily overwhelmed the Burma
Army, with the help of sailing tugs and soldiers
• 1825, when the Enterprise sailed around the world, after 113 days at
sea
• 1828, when Thomas Prinsep's Bentinck explored the Ganghes River
in India
• 1834, when the regular service on the Ganghes River was inaugurated
• 1835, when McGregor Laird's Euphrates explored the Tigris River, and
through it dominated Mesopotamia
• 1838, when the Royal Navy's Nemesis established the London-Brazil-
China route
• By 1840 the Indian Navy controlled the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and
the Persian Gulf, thanks to the 3 old Europe-East routes and the new
British land route.
• By 1850 the steam-powered gunboats were invented, which were
decisive in the British speed and victories in: the Crimean War-1855,
the Second Opium War-1858, the Second Burma War-1859.
• In 1860 the Secret Committee of the Indian Navy decided to increase
the dimensions of all steamships and placed a stable detachment in
the Indus River area.

What mainly differentiates a steamboat from a sailing or combustion boat

are the chimneys that they must expel the smoke that is produced in a
residual way.
In addition, other traditional parts of the steamboat are the paddle
wheels themselves, which make the boat, through the steam engine,
gain in terms of propulsion and, therefore, in terms of speed and
efficiency.

The main function of the steamboat was the increase in efficiency thanks to
the power of the steam engine to not only carry more merchandise and
passengers, but also to transport them at a higher speed.

In short, the main characteristics of the steamboat are the appearance of

chimneys, paddle wheels and the large volume that the engine occupied in
the boat, giving rise to little room for maneuver when transporting goods,
compared to later modern ships. With this, it was the main pillar for the
industrial revolution to reach its peak, giving rise to a moment in which the
flow of world trade was increasing thanks to the shortening of travel times
and the greater transport of goods and services people.

Steamboats are no longer manufactured today as they have been rendered

ineffective by bigger freight ships, modern bridges, and other modes of
transportation. Yet, some of the remaining ones found their purpose and
continue to cross rivers and lakes for leisure tours and cruises. While they
are no longer in their heyday and no longer traverse the county’s
waterways as they widely did before, there’s no doubt about their deep
legacy and dramatic contribution to United States technology and history.
