Abstrac: The subway mining method described is known as block sinking or scour. This
method is used when there is a mineralized body of large extensions and it is required to
induce the breaking and sinking of the rock to extract the mineral. To initiate the
process, a basal cut is made through conventional drilling and blasting methods. This
generates induced stresses in the rock column, added to the tectonic stresses and the
force of gravity, which generate instability in the rock and initiate scour. Scour
continues as material extraction progresses from the point of extraction. The material is
transported to a transfer pick that is responsible for directing it to the next process,
either reduction or transport. As for the variants of the method, Block Caving and Panel
Caving stand out. In Block Caving, the sinking is carried out by means of blocks and
requires greater preparation, since the development of the different levels must be
carried out before starting the extraction of the mineral. An advantage of this method is
greater flexibility in controlling dilution of waste material. In Panel Caving, the
development of the different levels is carried out simultaneously as panels of the rock
mass are undermined. This variant allows cash flows to be generated earlier in the
project and the investment to be recovered more quickly. It is also preferred when the
extent of the mining area is large or when production is at great depth. The block
sinking or scour mining method can have different operational variants, such as
Conventional Sinking, Pre-sinking and Advanced Sinking, which are adapted to the
specific characteristics of each mining project.
