LOS CUATES
If a Spanish speaker introduces his or her friend
as a cuate/a, you know for sure that he or she is
a Mexican. A cuate/a is a close friend, someone
you may have known for years. Cuates are the
friends you play soccer with every day after school
or those who invite you to their birthday parties.
Generally, cuates are friends who live in your
neighborhood with whom you grew up and that
you see all the time. As a young adult, cuates are
the people you go out with on a Saturday night or with whom you meet in a sports
bar to watch your favorite team.

THE VERB gustar
The verb gustar in Spanish is used to express to like/dislike doing something. Because gustar literally means to
be pleasing (to someone), the subject pronouns (yo, tú, él/ella, Ud., nosotros, vosotros, ellos/as, Uds.) are not
used. Instead, you will use the pronouns me, te, le, nos, os, and les, followed by gusta + inf.
me gusta + inf. I like (to do something) nos gusta + inf. we like (to do something)
te gusta + inf. you (sing. fam.) like os gusta + inf. you (pl. fam.) like (to do something)
(to do something)
le gusta + inf. he/she likes (to do something) les gusta + inf. he/she likes (to do something) you
you (sing. form.) like (pl. form.) like (to do something)
(to do something)
To ask “Do you like (to do something)?,” use these patterns:
¿Te gusta + inf.? (sing. fam.) ¿Os gusta + inf.? (pl. fam.)
¿Le gusta + inf.? (sing. form.) ¿Les gusta + inf.? (pl. form.)
—¿Te gusta caminar todos los días? Do you like to walk every day?
—Sí, me gusta caminar en el parque. Yes, I like to walk in the park.
Les gusta jugar al basquetbol. They like to play basketball.
Add the word no before the pronoun to express dislikes.
No me gusta correr. I don’t like to jog.
No te gusta beber café. You do not like to drink coffee.
When using le or les, you can use the phrase a + pronoun/name to clarify who likes/dislikes.
a + él/ella/Ud./name le gusta + inf. a + ellos/ellas/Uds./name(s) les gusta + inf.
A Miguel le gusta leer novelas históricas. Miguel likes to read historical novels.
A ella le gusta pasar tiempo con sus amigos. She likes to spend time with her friends.

Organizing Your Ideas. Getting organized is a very important pre-writing
strategy. After you’ve brainstormed your initial ideas (see Palabra escrita: A
comenzar in Capítulo 1), group those ideas by category so that all related
ideas are together. Then look for patterns or a logical sequence in which to
present your ideas and arrange them in that order. Once you’ve done this,
your composition and your thoughts should be much more organized and thus
clearer to the reader.
You are going to start the process of writing a brief composition that you will finalize
in the Palabra escrita: A finalizar section of your Workbook/Laboratory Manual. The
topic of this composition will be La pasión por los deportes. The purpose of your
composition will be to tell the reader about what sports are popular in your area.
A. Lluvia de ideas. With a partner, answer these questions, based on what you’ve learned
in Tema I.
B. A organizar (Let’s organize) tus ideas. Review your ideas and organize them into
categories and in a logical order, as suggested in the strategy box. Look for additional
details on the Internet. Share your information with the class and jot down any addi-
tional ideas that you gain from that experience.
C. A escribir. Now write a first draft of your composition with the information that you
provided in Actividades A and B. ¡OJO! Keep your work in a safe place. You’ll need it
again when you do the Palabra escrita: A finalizar section in your Workbook/Labora-
tory Manual.
