Plural Nouns

The majority of nouns make their plural by adding (S) to the end of the word.
However, some do change their endings. The main types of nouns that do this
are: La mayoría de los sustantivos hacen su plural añadiendo (S) al final de la palabra. Sin embargo, algunos cambian sus
terminaciones. Los principales tipos de sustantivos que hacen esto son:

Rule 1: When the noun ends with a consonant plus Y , we make the noun plural by
replacing the Y with (ies): Cuando el sustantivo termina con una consonante más Y, hacemos el sustantivo plural
reemplazando Y con (ies)

Lady – Señora Ladies – Señoras country – país countries - países

(léidi) (léidis) (cántry) (cántris)

Rule 2: When the noun ends with a vowel plus a Y, we make the noun plural by simply
adding (s) Cuando el sustantivo termina con una vocal más un Y, hacemos el sustantivo plural añadiendo simplemente (s)

boy - chico boys - chicos monkey - mono monkeys - monos

(bói) (bóis) (monki) (monkis)

Rule 3: when the noun ends with -ch,-s,-sh,-x,or-z,-ss, we make the noun plural by adding
(es) Cuando el sustantivo termina con -ch, -s, -sh, -x, o-z, -ss, hacemos el sustantivo plural agregando (es)

brush - cepillo brushes - cepillos beach - playa beaches - playas

(brásh) (bráshis) (bíich) (bíichis)

EXCEPTION- excepción
: if the ending of a (CH) noun is pronounced with a “K” sound, we add (-S) instead of - es
Si el sustantivo termina en (CH) pero se pronuncia con un sonido "K", añadimos (-S) en lugar de –es
Stomach - estómago Stomachs -estómagos
(stamak) (stamaks)
Rule 4 : when the noun ends in a consonant or a single vowel plus - f, or - fe, we change the
- f or - fe to (ves) Cuando el sustantivo termina en una consonante o una sola vocal más - f, o - fe, cambiamos el - f o - fe
a (ves)

Knife - cuchillo Knives – cuchillos leaf - hoja leaves - hojas

(náif) (náivs) (líif) (líivs)

EXCEPTION- excepción
For some nouns that end in two vowels plus - f ,we make the noun plural by simply adding
(-S) Para algunos sustantivos que terminan en dos vocales plus - f, hacemos el sustantivo plural añadiendo simplemente (-S)

Chief -jefe chiefs - jefes spoof- parodia spoofs - parodias

Rule 5: As a general rule for most nouns that end in (o) we make the noun plural by adding
(-S)(there are many exceptions to this rule) Como regla general para la mayoría de los sustantivos que
terminan en (O) hacemos el sustantivo plural añadaieñdo (-S) (hay muchas excepciones a esta regla)

Zero - Zeros
Avocado – avocados

Rule 6: For some nouns, we change letters or change the word completely.
Para algunos sustantivos, cambiamos las letras o cambiamos la palabra por completo.

(foot - pie feet - pies) (woman - mujer women - mujeres) (person - persona people – gente)
