This spreadsheet implements the Tier 1 method for estimating emissions of methane from solid waste disposal sites. For details of the
method see the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories Volume 5 Chapter 3

©IPCC 2006

Introduction

This spreadsheet has been developed by the IPCC to enable countries to estimate emissions of methane from solid waste disposal
sites (SWDS) using the first order decay method. It also allows an estimation of the carbon stored in the SWDS by in the Harvested
Wood Products (HWP) category as well as methane from HWP in SWDS. See Volume 4 Chapter 12 for details.

Step by Step Instructions

The input parameters are entered into cells coloured yellow in the worksheets with yellow coloured tabs. All other cells and
worksheets are calculated automatically, and cannot be changed. For each input cell, the user can enter either national data or
IPCC default data. IPCC default data are provided in a separate (grey) panel for the user to copy if required. It is good practice to
use national data wherever possible. All data sources should be clearly referenced.

1. Enter the country in the “Parameters” worksheet and select the appropriate region from the drop down menu. The region
selection will adjust the IPCC defaults in other worksheets based on values in the 2006 Guidelines.

2. Set the starting year for the calculations on the “Parameters” worksheet. The default starting year is 1950, but this can be

changed by the user if required. It is good practice to use a starting year of 1950 or earlier. If the starting year is set later than
1950, the inventory compiler should demonstrate that there will be no significant underestimation of emissions from waste
disposed of between 1950 and the starting year. For example, in hot, wet climates with shallow disposal sites, degradation may

For example, in hot, wet climates with shallow disposal sites, degradation may
be fast enough to justify the use of a later starting year. If you change the start year after you have entered activity data, you will
need to manually move the activity data to the correct year in the MCF, Activity, Amnt_Deposited, and Recovery_OX sheets, as
applicable.

3. Fill in the values for the parameters DOC, DOCf, methane generation rate constant, fraction to methane and oxidation rate, on
the “Parameters” sheet. Where no national data are available, use IPCC default values shown in the grey cells.

a. The drop-down menu in the DOC input area allows for selection of DOC and methane generation rate constant defaults
for modelling by waste composition or by bulk MSW. When using the bulk waste model and IPCC waste type/material
composition default values it is good practice to check that the national definition for MSW corresponds to the IPCC
default definition. Larger amounts of inert material (e.g., inclusion of construction and demolition waste in MSW) may
lead to overestimation of the emissions, or in the opposite case to underestimation. Also, it is of importance to keep
good track of waste composition when using the bulk waste option, both for determining new DOC values as waste
composition changes, and for HWP calculations. Nations using the bulk waste option, with DOC for MSW varying over
time, enter the DOC data directly onto the lightly coloured yellow DOC column in the "MSW" sheet. Make a notice of
this in the "Parameters" sheet.

b. The drop-down menu in the methane generation rate constant input area allows selection of the appropriate IPCC
default values for the selected climate zone. Guidance on the choice of values for these parameters is given in section
3.2.3 of the Guidelines (Choice of Emission Factors and Parameters).

c. Nations with oxidation rate (OX) varying over time, enter the OX data directly onto the lightly coloured yellow OX
column in the "Recovery_OX" sheet. Make a notice of this in the "Parameters" sheet.

4. Time Delay. Enter the "Delay time" (in "Parameters" worksheet). The default assumption is that the reaction starts on the first of
January in the year after deposition, which is equivalent to an average delay time of six months before decay to methane
commences ("Delay time" = 6). It is good practice to assume an average delay of from two to six months. If a value greater than
six months is chosen, evidence to support this must be provided. To make the model work for delay times from 7 to 18 months,
the number 13 in “exp2” in all the methane calculating sheets has to be changed to 25, and DDOCmd in columns F and G has to
be readdressed one cell down.

5. Enter data on the approximate distribution of waste between different types of sites in the appropriate columns on the “MCF”
worksheet to calculate the weighted average MCF (Methane correction factor). Either IPCC default MCFs (pre-entered) or
country-specific values may be entered in the yellow cells at the top of the sheet (Row 13). Guidance on selecting a methane
correction factor is given in Volume 5, Section 3.2.3 of the Guidelines. The average methane correction factor may vary with time
according to changes in waste management practices. The distribution of waste disposed by management type also needs to be
entered in the "MCF" worksheet. Row 16 can be used to enter a fixed distribution to be used for all years. If management

IPCC Spreadsheet for Estimating Methane emissions from Solid Waste Disposal Sites

Bulk waste and waste composition options.

Theory and equations

The basic equation for the first order decay model is:

(1) DDOCm = DDOCm(0) * e^-kt

where DDOCm(0) is the mass of decomposable degradable organic carbon (DOC) at the start of the
reaction, when t=0 and e^-kt=1, k is the reaction constant and t is the time in years. DDOCm is the mass of
DDOC at any time.

From equation (I) it is easy to see that at the end of year 1 (going from point 0 to point 1 on the time axis)
the mass of DDOC left not decomposed in the SWDS is:

(2) DDOCm(1) = DDOCm(0) * e^-k

and the mass of DDOC decomposed into CH4 and CO2 will be:

(3) DDOCmdecomp(1) = DDOCm(0) * (1 - e^-k)

In a first order reaction, the amount of product (here decomposed DDOCm) is always proportional to the
amount of reactant (here DDOCm). This means that it does not matter when the DDOCm was deposited.
This also means that when the amount of DDOCm accumulated in the SWDS, plus last year's deposit, is
known, CH4 production can be calculated as if every year is year number one in the time series. Then all
calculations can be done by equations (2) and (3) in a simple spreadsheet.

The default assumption is that CH4 generation from all the waste deposited each year begins on the 1st of
January in the year after deposition. This is the same as an average six month delay until substantial CH4
generation begins (the time it takes for anaerobic conditions to become well established). However, the
worksheet includes the possibility of an earlier start to the reaction, in the year of deposition of the waste.
This requires separate calculations for the deposition year. For longer delay times than 6 months, DDOCmd
in the columns F and G cells in the CH4 calculating sheets, have to be readdressed one cell down, and the
number 13 in exp2 has to be changed to 25 (7 to 18 months delay time).

The equations used in these spreadsheets are: (As the mathematics of every waste fraction/category is the
same, indexing for fraction/category is omitted for equations 4-9.)

To calculate mass of decomposable DOC (DDOCm) from amount of waste material (W):

(4) DDOCmd(T), = W(T) • DOC * DOCf • MCF

The amount of deposited DDOCm remaining not decomposed at the end of deposition year T:

(5) DDOCmrem(T) = DDOCmd(T) • e^(-k • ((13-M)/12)

The amount of deposited DDOCm decomposed during deposition year T:

(6) DDOCmdec(T) = DDOCmd(T) • (1 – e^(-k • ((13-M)/12)))

The amount of DDOCm accumulated in the SWDS at the end of year T

(7) DDOCma(T) = DDOCmrem(T) + ( DDOCma(T-1) • e^-k)

The total amount of DDOCm decomposed in year T

(8) DDOCmdecomp(T) = DDOCmdec(T) + (DDOCma(T-1) • (1 - e^-k))

The amount of CH4 generated from DOC decomposed

(9) CH4 generated(T) = DDOCmdecomp(T) • F • 16/12

The amount of CH4 emitted

(10) CH4 emitted in year T = (ΣxCH4 generated (x,T) – R(T)) • (1- OX(T))

Where:
The amount of CH4 generated from DOC decomposed

(9) CH4 generated(T) = DDOCmdecomp(T) • F • 16/12

The amount of CH4 emitted

(10) CH4 emitted in year T = (ΣxCH4 generated (x,T) – R(T)) • (1- OX(T))

Where:
T = the year of inventory
x = material fraction/waste category
W(T) = amount deposited in year T
MCF = Methane Correction Factor
DOC = Degradable organic carbon (under aerobic conditions)
DOCf = Fraction of DOC decomposing under anaerobic conditions
DDOC = Decomposable Degradable Organic Carbon (under anaerobic conditions)
DDOCmd(T) = mass of DDOC deposited year T
DDOCmrem(T) = mass of DDOC deposited in inventory year T, remaining not decomposed at the

end of year.
DDOCmdec(T) = mass of DDOC deposited in inventory year T, decomposed during the year.
DDOCma(T) = total mass of DDOC left not decomposed at end of year T.
DDOCma(T-1) = total mass of DDOC left not decomposed at end of year T-1.
DDOCmdecomp(T) = total mass of DDOC decomposed in year T.
CH4 generated(T) = CH4 generated in year T
F = Fraction of CH4 by volume in generated landfill gas
16/12 = Molecular weight ratio CH4/C
R(T) = Recovered CH4 in year T
OX(T) = Oxidation factor in year T (fraction)
k = rate of reaction constant

MAT – Mean annual temperature;

MAP – Mean annual precipitation;
PET – Potential evapotranspiration.

The average annual MAT, MAP and PET during the time series selected to estimate the emission and
indicated by the nearest representative meteorological station. The information available is not adequate to
subdivide temperate into cold (<10°C) and warm (10-20°C). In this IPCC classification for warm temperate,
MAT is referred to the growing season.
